Re: Is it still possible to create ringtones in iTunes?

2013-06-16 Thread Eileens Misrahi
Hello,

In iTunes, press control-comma to open the preferences interface. The first tab
is the thgeneral" which one can tab through all of the options to check or
uncheck. These are the folders that one can have in iTunes list. Now, when one
creates a ring tone, the folder will be one for tones. HTH.

Is anyone using a Wireless Talking Thermometer for their pool?

2013-06-16 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi all. I have done some research and haven't found Anything that would connect
through the Acu-Link weather App for the iPhone..

There is a Wireless non-talking "Home / Digital Floating Water Thermometer with
Indoor Display for Pool / Spa / Lake 00617" through acurite.com. It doesn't
appear to work with the Acu-link App as it has its' own receiver..

I did write them an email suggesting that they add a speech chip to this indoor
unit.

The Acu-Link does work with a number of weather sensors but this is not what I
need I would like to be able to check the pool temperature from within the
house.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Barry

Again, somewhat off topic, but I have one of those new machines and I don't
care what it says. I just wash everything at normal cycle and my wife has never
complained, at least about my washing. My machine also beeps a different tone
for hot, warm and cold water.

Sometimes there just is not an app for that and it's easier to find an

RE: Is it still possible to create ringtones in iTunes?

2013-06-16 Thread rhs
I don't have a "tones" or "ring tones" folder. I tried creating one and
putting the new ringtone in it but itunes didn't recognize it. Can you give
a pointer as to what to do?

Thanks Sieghard, these are essentially the instructions I shared. I couldn't
imagine losing the capability to create ringtones this way. I'm glad it's
still possible.

Re: Correction to, a Microphone possibility for the iPhone etc.

2013-06-16 Thread Brent Harding
Would it really make a difference? Is it possible to obtain a 30 pin to USB
adapter to use with USB mics on an iPhone, or is it only the pad that has the
USB drivers to let this happen? I suppose one obstacle for us might be that the
audio output ends up going into the USB and not getting heard unless these
adapters can just use the input line.

Re: Facebook app frustrations

2013-06-16 Thread Keith Bundy
Hi, Christine. I have workarounds for two things. When you want to like
something, sometimes you have to press like two or three times before it
accepts it. I don't know why, but that just seems to be the case

On the notifications page, I have to use the two finger scrub motion in order
to go back, as it does not seem to be a back button. But this works for me.
Give it a try.

Voice Dream Questions

2013-06-16 Thread Sandy Finley
I have a question re the VoiceDream update. I am hoping to get responses
both from Winston and from other VO users familiar with the program.

I created two folders for myself, one for books and one for web sites. As
dumb as this sounds, now I cannot find the content I had in Voice Dream
prior to creating those folders. I had a couple of BookShare books, a N Y
Times and some web pages. They are not on either the home screen or the
folders screen and the newly created folders are empty.

Thanks for the pronunciation dictionary; that is great!

RE: Is it still possible to create ringtones in iTunes?

2013-06-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kimber and Shane,

There is absolutely no change as far as creating ringtones in iTunes. I am
using the latest version of iTunes and just tried it and it took me all of 2
minutes to create a ringtone, copy it into my Tones folder and sync it to my
phone. In any case, I am not sure why this has to do with Apple
Accessibility since it's a standard iTunes feature. Below is a listing of
the basic steps and I follow this with a more detailed set of instructions I
posted on the list a few times before:

1. Find the song you want
2. Press Control+I for "Get Information", arrow to the options tab, tab to
start and end time and set end time to no more than 40 seconds.
3. Right click on your song and select "Create AAC Version"
4. Right click on the newly created 40 second version of the song and select
"Show in Windows Explorer"
5. Cut the song with Control+X, then go to your Tones or Ringtones folder in
iTunes Media which in turn in in i/tunes which in turn should be in your
Music or My Music folder.
6. Paste the song with Control+V
7. Go to the Tools menu of your Windows Explorer window, go to Folder
Options and the View tab, make sure "Hide extensions for known file types"
is Off.
8. Rename the .M4A extension to M4R.
9. Press enter on the newly renamed file to play it in iTunes, this
automatically adds it to your Tones library.
10. Connect your phone, make sure Sync All Tones is selected or if you sync
selected tones, make sure your new ringtone is checked, then sync your
phone.
That's it.

Below are the more detailed instructions. This is for Windows, not sure what
would be different if you use one of the inferior Mac computers *smile*.

Creating Ringtones from songs using iTune for Windows:

1. Find the song you want to make into a ringtone in your Music tab in
iTunes.

2. Right click and select "Get Info". Go to the "Options" tab, tab down to
"Start Time" and check it by pressing the space bar. Tab again and specify
the Start Time.
usually you start at the beginning of the song, i.e. 0:00, but if the song
starts very slow you may want to find a good spot a few seconds from the
beginning where you start the ringtone.
tab one more time to go to "Stop Time", check it also and tab to the edit
field, specify the Stop Time. This will ensure that iTunes will play the
song starting from the specified Start Time to the Stop Time.
Make sure that the stop time doesn't exceed the start time by more than 40
seconds which is the maximum length of a ringtone.
Click OK.
Press enter to play the song, it will only play the part of the song you
selected and you can see if it sounds good where it starts and stops.
If it stops in the middle of a note or word you can make it a few seconds
shorter to find a better place.
I usually set the stop time to 39 or 40 seconds and then make it shorter to
make it sound good.
The start time is displayed as 0:00 where the first 0 means 0 minutes, then
a ":" and then the 00 after that is for the seconds.
The stop time by default has the ending time of the song, for example
3:23.46 where the first 3 is the number of minutes, then the ":", then the
next 2 digits are the seconds and then a "." and the last number or numbers
is I guess maybe in one tenth of a second or even one hundreds, not quite
sure, but it's a very small increment.

Note:
Instead of right clicking on the song you can also use the Windows
Application Key (some call it the Context menu Key, it's on the right side
of the space bar next to the Control key). Even easier is to use the
keyboard shortcut "Control+I" and this should work in Windows XP as well as
Windows 7.

3. Right click, press the Context Menu Key or press Control+I when you are
on the selected song and select "Creat AAC Version from the context menu.
Almost immediately you will hear that tri-tone iTunes makes when it's
finished doing something.
This will create an AAC version of the song for only the section of the song
you specified.
This new short song will appear right underneath the original song in your
list of songs, so you just have to down arrow once to find it.
Press enter to play it and to make sure it is as you want it.
you can now go back to the original and, in the Options Tab, uncheck the
start and stop times so that it will play normally again.

Note:
If you don't see a "Create AAC Version option when you right click on the
song, go to "Edit", "Preferences" and in the General tab click on Import
settings, the shortcut is Alt+O.
Make sure that the AAC encoder settings are selected, if MP3 is selected as
the encoder you have to change it to AAC.
I also suggest you check this anyways and make sure you have "iTunes Plus"
selected for the quality to make sure you create a good quality ringtone.

4. Select the newly created short AAC version of the song in iTunes and
press CTRL+C for "copy". Open your iTunes folder (most likely in "My Music",
go to the "iTunes Media" folder and the "Tones" or "Ringtones" folder. Press
Control+V to paste the song into the

Hi Kimber,
I'm not sure which version of iTunes we lost the ability to create the
tones, however, I'll try to explain to you the way that I did it in a more
clear way.
First, I downloaded an app called RMaker from the App Store. Then from the
app on my phone, I selected a song that I wanted to create a tone in. I've
then selected the start and stop time, and then double tap on save. Then I
plug the phone up to the computer, and it using iTunes, check the apps
checkbox, then tab over to iTunes filesharing. I've then found theRMaker
App, and found the new ringtone I Created, then tabbed over to save to, and
saved it to the tones folder. I then opened up that folder, and pressed
enter, The song began playing, and then as the song was playing, it got
imported into the iTunes ringtones folder.
I hope this helped.
Shane.

RE: which headphones

2013-06-16 Thread Jessica Diaz PC
Hello,
I just received my blues last week and let's just say I love them. I wear
them a lot on the trains and buses and people say I sound clear unless there
is a lot of background chatting which then they hear that too. The sound of
them took me a bit to get use to since they sit in front of the ear but I
really really think these are a excellent buy. Also, I too have a guide and
these make it honestly awesome to work him and keep chatting or listening to
a bit of low music.

Buddy,

I'm currently waiting on my pair of the Aftershocks Blues to be shipped.
They've been on back order since early May. These are the Bluetooth version
of the wired sports headphones being sold. As far as I know, the only
difference between the two versions of the wired sports headphones is that
one has a mice and the other doesn't. Oh, and they are about $40 cheaper
than the Bluetooth version.

I chose the wireless root because I'm not crazy about hauling around a fanny
pack, a guide dog, and more wires. I've been using a Trekker Breeze for
several years and even though I can keep the speaker wires contained, I have
occasionally gotten it tangled in my dog's leash, my fanny pack strap, and
yes, once, even my hair, though you probably won't have this specific issue.

I know some people have discussed a delay with VO and the Bluetooth devices,
so I guess that might be an issue. For me, though, the benefits offered by
my ability to hear my surroundings as well as VO on my phone is most likely
going to outweigh any delay that occurs.

Chocolate is the answer... who cares what the question is!

Re: status bar

2013-06-16 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

Do you have Weather Radio or Storm Shield installed? Those apps track your
location regularly by default to try to give you the most relevant weather
warnings. If not, go to Settings/Privacy and choose Location Services. YOu'll
find a list of all the apps that are using Location Services and be told which
have checked your location recently.

Best,
Anna

I use a plain-old text editor to edit my web-site. I bring down the page,
edit it & then copy it back over the top of the now older copy. Do yourself
a favor, ... make sure to keep a back-up of the older file in case you do
something stupid like erase the wrong file. If any of you want to see my
results, go to this site:

Ok, I think some of the more advanced editors - Pages for example - can do
the markup, though I write it by hand.

Hosting is quite cheap and for sure you don't want to put your page on one
of those ad-supported freebies. Not sure where you are and whether UK
companies would allow overseas hosted domains. The name is wholly Your own
invention, tlD or top-level-domain are price dependent, .me.uk is quite
cheap, so .com, .org, .net are usally all cheap too.

Paying for a two year ownership of your domain name tends to be separate
from the hosting plan of so much a month or year. I pay by the year as it
is cheap. e.g: I pay £25/year for small hosting and about £12.50 for 2
years of my domain name .hoh.me.uk, and others.

Getting your content into that space with an iDevice might be another issue.
You can have a creative interface like Wordpress and things, so could do
that on your device, but That remote app adds stuff as eye candy whether
you want it or not. You couldn't edit the source on your local editor, too
big and too complicated.

Security notwithstanding, I wrote my own .php scripts to upload to and edit
mine, but scripting/programming was more my thing,... once. I had to put
that there using ftp, so we're back to an old question about - can I find an
ftp client for my iPhone?

Just some thoughts, RobH.

Facebook app frustrations

2013-06-16 Thread Christine Grassman
All righty, fellow Facebook folks: I am trying to figure out why, and more
importantly, if there is a workaround for the following issues:
1. "Liking" something sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. (I find this is
true both on the phone and on my Mac.)
2. When I want to see who "liked" a post, sometimes it will show me, and other
times it will go to the one page of the last person to like. There does not
seem to be any rhyme or reason to this.
3. When I check my notifications, on the phone, there does not seem to be a
back button; am I missing something?
4. Sometimes when I want to "like" on someone's page because of something
shared, I can only like the shared link on its original page, not on my
friend's page.
5. There are times when I click on a friend's page to read further something
posted, and the app does nothing at all.
6. Sometimes I cannot get to the posted link, or read the comments. (I realize
some people's privacy settings might not permit me to see their comments, but
it is unlikely that this is true of all of the people on the larger sites I am
referring to.)

Any workarounds, explanations, and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Happy Father's Day to those to whom it applies.
Christine

Is it still possible to create ringtones in iTunes?

2013-06-16 Thread Kimberly
Hi All,

Recently I shared instructions for creating ringtones in iTunes. After sending
the instructions, I heard back from someone who was told by apple accessibility
that it is no longer possible to create ringtones in this way. When did this
happen?

I'm running an older version of iTunes and I'm wondering in which version did
we lose the ability to create ringtones using iTunes?

Thanks

A question for developers or I'm too old for this

2013-06-16 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi there, folks. I hope this question i'm going to ask isn't off-topic, because
i'm totally at my wits end when it comes to this.
I have registered as an Apple Developer and paid for the Ios program. I have
registered my IPhone with Apple, but how do i actually get to and install IOs 7
on my IPhone? Do i require some kind of certificate or other stuff to register
and where do i get that? I have downoaded both the IOs file that was meant for
downloading and some sort of installation package, which i don't know anything
about. I feel i'm running in cirkles and as is so common nowadays for me, i
only feel stupid and confused. If you don't want to clog up the list with this
reply, please feel free to write me privately to kris...@kristersplace.com. Any
help is most appreciated.

Subject: IPad mini and head phones.

Hi All,
I just got my mini, and am I correct in assuming that if I want head phones,
they must be bluetooth head phones? I don't see a head phone jack on the
mini at all. And here is another question. I have a bluetooth keyboard which
I bought for the mini IPad. Can you have your bluetooth keyboard and
bluetooth head phones on at the same time? Jim

New iOS 3D Audio Game: Ear Monsters

Hello Everyone,

My new audio game for iOS, Ear Monsters, just went live on the App Store.

Ear Monsters is an arcade-style, action game for iPad, iPhone and iPod
touch that relies on sound, rather than visuals for the game's action.

Instead of a longer, story-based game like (the excellent) Papa Sangre, I
wanted to make a game in the old-school arcade-style; timed gameplay, where
you compete against yourself (and your friends) for high scores. The game
is based on quick, but skilled listening; Monster's appear quickly and must
be killed quickly solely by hearing where they are. You will need
headphones to play Ear Monsters.

Ear Monsters is the first in a number of sound-based 'video'-games I plan
on releasing. So I'd love any feedback you have, particularly on it's
accessibility. The game is fully compatible with VoiceOver (no need to
triple-tap before playing), and was designed to be played completely by
sound; an audio game in the truest sense of the phrase.

Features:
•Timed gameplay for quick arcade-style action
•Simple to understand and play …yet difficult to master —no elaborate
training needed
•Difficulty increases as your skill improves!
•Practice arena to sharpen your ear
•Multiple audio backgrounds, from city ambiance to a windy day to a full on
storm
•Visual and aural feedback
•Stunningly vivid 3D audio effects
•Unlockable 3D Sound Gallery features all original 3D sound effects

You can see our promo video at http://www.EarGames.com, or see the game in
iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ear-monsters/id652283694?mt=8

We also have a facebook page, where we'll be sharing game hints, tips and
tricks: facebook.com/EarGames

Thank you
