Hi, Simon, and, everyone, great news to tell you all. My friend's iPhone was
returned to her by way of the driver bringing it back to her. I don't know the
details of how all this happened, meaning if the driver found her phone in his
car and looked to find any contact information in her phone. She told me
someone contacted him, so as I said I don't know the details about all of how
she got her phone returned to her, the most important thing is that she has it.
I'm just beginning to go through email now this morning so I want to thank
Simon, and all of you that responded to my message. I'll copy the messages so
she can read any tips and advice given, and send it to her, and keep all these
messages in case information like this is needed again. My friend thanks all of
you as well.

If it’s an iphone then there is find my ipHone which she can log in to via the
web browser on a computer,

If it’s an android,
There is a simplar product called (from memory) find my droid,

Either tool can let you remotely connect to the device either sounding an alerm,
Sending a message to it or remotely wiping the device so it’s not useable by
anyone else.
The android find my droid,
I’m not sure of the details these daysbut there must be something on the net

Good luck to her.

A friend wrote to me concerning accidently leaving her iPhone in a lyft car.
Her insurance can't get in touch with lyft and the police say they can't do
anything about it. I don't use this type of transportation so if this has
happened to anyone else and how you were able to solve this with getting your
phone returned to you, or if anyone knows what to do and or knows how to get in
touch with lyft, please let me know and I'll pass the information on to her. I
gave her the subscribing directions for subscribing to the list, but don't know
if she'll get accepted and on to the list quick enough where this experience is
concerned. Thank you for any helpful solutions.

If you are using iOS 14, you should be aware there is a setting to minimize
the appearance of the Phone app during a call, making it appear as a small
banner, rather than the traditional full screen view with keypad visible.

You can change this and restore the original appearance during calls as
follows:
  1. Go to Settings > Phone.
  2. Swipe to Incoming Calls, and double tap to open.
  3. Select Full Screen as your desired display style.

  HTH.

Yes. While on the call, you would need to pull the phone away from your ear
because the screen won't respond if it is too close to your head, and so it may
go on speaker which is good so you can hear VoiceOver. Open the phone app, and
then double tap on the keypad tab.
you can access any app on the phone while talking. Of course, if you have
headphones on, that makes it easier.

there is a setting under the VoiceOver settings, Audio called auto select
speaker in call that should be on.
The description of that setting says, During audio calls, automatically
switch to the speaker when not holding your iPhone to your ear.
Meaning that if you put the phone by your ear, and pull it away, it will
automatically switch to speaker.
Or, if you just place your hand over the upper half of the phone and pull
it away, it will switch to speaker.
The keypad should show up if you use Siri to place a call.
You can also open the phone app, and double tap on keypad which is the 4th
tab along the bottom of the screen.
The two finger double tap to answer or hang up is a VoiceOver function. It
will not work unless VoiceOver is active.

Re: Masks & Face ID

2021-03-11 Thread Wendy Lin
Hi All,

Well based on the Youtube videos I’ve watched from Apple Insider and 9to5 Mac,
the Face ID feature with the masks will only work to unlock your phone if you
have an Apple Watch.

RE: Transit near address

2021-03-11 Thread Richard Turner
Do you have BlindSquare? With that you can simulate a location and look for
transit stops.

Also, the free Good Maps Explorer may be able to do that.
It will show up on your device as Explorer.

No, we are house hunting, so I wanted to put in an address and see if any
transit is nearby. Possibly get walking directions to the nearest stop.

Thanks,

That's because the name comes up on the caller ID comes up as the account
holders name. T-Mobile can make this adjustment for you by calling 611.

strange issue with phone identification

2021-03-11 Thread Vicki W.
Hi,

Today I was working on my computer with my cell phone on the table next to me.
The screen was locked on the phone and I was alone at that moment.

My land line rang and it said it was my cell phone calling, announcing my name
as the caller.

When I checked the number, it was my husband's cell phone number announcing my
name. He had indeed called me from the grocery store, so it was his phone.

He checked the name under about in general settings, and it was his name. The
account is in his name as well. We are both using the latest IOS update.

The only thing we have in common as far as the phone is T-Mobile. The T-Mobile
account is in my name, but his phone and number, as well as his Apple ID are
all his.

What would make it show up as my name with his number when he calls someone?
Where can we look to change it?

Thanks.

Vicki

I wondered how we would get on if you could have the tip of your nose as a

Another thing I forgot to mention, is that Face ID is great if you happen to
have wet finger tips. After washing dishes, I cannot unlock my phone without
using my passcode. I have the SE 2nd gen, so no face ID. But when I was
working and used the iPHone 11, the Face ID worked great.
Just drying your hands with a towel doesn't always get enough of the moisture
off to not mess up the fingerprint sensor.

And with Face Id you simply look at yoru phone instead of putting your finger
on the home button, as others pointed out, it's just as easy and seamless and
in some cases it works even better in others not. It seems there is a pretty
high probability that this Fall's iPhone will have both which would of course
be great.

The nice thing is, you don't have to use face ID if you don't want to.
I remember a while ago, I talked to someone at apple accessibility.
They were very helpful, and told me, that if you didn't want to use face ID,
you could use your pass-code instead. If the iPhone 13 doesn't have a touch ID

I've thought about this myself,

I wondered how we would get on if you could have the tip of your nose as a
finger print on your phone so if you do have wet fingers,
You could use your nose?

If the iPhone 13 doesn't have a touch ID
option, that's what I'm going to do. I'm glad if I don't want to use faceID I

Both the event for a couple of weeks away,

Next Apple Event Rumored for March
23
March is a common month of the year for Apple to announce new or updated
products, and this year will likely be no exception.

A reliable Chinese leaker known as "Kang" this week said an Apple Event is
planned for Tuesday, March
23,
with potential new products including Apple's long-awaited
AirTags
item trackers, a new iPad Pro with a Mini-LED
display,
 third-generation
AirPods,
and a new Apple TV. A wildcard possibility is a redesigned iMac with an Apple
silicon chip.

If the rumor is accurate, Apple should officially announce the event early next
week. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the event will surely be another virtual
affair with a prerecorded video from Apple Park.

RE: Masks & Face ID

Hi Richard,

IOS 14 also allows you to have an alternate face in your face id settings,

So in a way you can have both faces in there.

If you have two faces that is.

You can only have one face, but apparently it looks like iOS 14.5 will allow
for masks during face ID. Not sure how that will work, but those who have a

I have an IPhone 8 so still use touch id. When you set that up you can set it
up for more than one finger. With face id, can you set it up with more than
one face? If so, you could have both masked & unmasked faces for use in
unlocking the phone. I’m guessing this isn’t possible or one of you would have
done it. I’m just curious though since it would make sense to allow more than
one face just as it does to allow more than one finger.

I have to agree,

I’m looking to update my 11 pro max but I’m getting the 13 rather than the 12

I agree with Sieghard on all counts.
Face ID works quite well, blind or not, and also finger dexterity might make
entering a passcode hard, but it shouldn’t effect touch ID since you just have
to touch the home button after training it, and training it is just touching it
at slightly different angles until it learns your finger.

And, on upgrading, unless you need a new phone right now because your current
phone is malfunctioning, wait and see what the 13 offers, plus, the 11 prices
will drop when the 13 comes out.

RE: Apple reportedly cuts iPhone 12 mini production amid tepid demand

2021-03-11 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Interesting,

I have’t heard of anyone purchasing one yet but I was lead to believe that the
battery life wasn’t great in the mini,

It was really the size that they were pushing as a replacement size or format
to that of the SE but with the face id and 5g features.

I wonder what this does for the 13’s format range.

Apple reportedly cuts iPhone 12 mini production amid tepid demand
Mikey CampbellMar 10, 2021

Apple has informed partner suppliers that it has reduced iPhone 12
mini production plans for the
first half of 2021, with manufacturing of some specialty parts suspended
altogether, according to a report on Wednesday.

Citing industry sources familiar with the matter, Nikkei reports major
suppliers were recently
informed of the
production shift that marks a change in Apple's procurement strategy. Prior to
the reported downward revision, the tech giant was aggressively buying
semiconductors, printed circuit boards and displays amid a worldwide parts
shortage.

Apple is targeting output at around 75 million iPhone units for the first half
of 2021, down 20% from December 2020, the report says. Much of that downgrade
is blamed on iPhone 12 mini. Nikkeisources note that demand for other iPhone
models like the iPhone 12
Proremains strong.

Today's report echoes rumblings out of Apple's Asian supply chain in
Januarywhen
Pegatron supposedly saw reduced orders for the diminutive iPhone. Foxconn,
which is tasked with assembling the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro
Max, received an increase in
orders for those models during the same period.

Apple introduced iPhone 12 mini last fall as an alternative to its flagship
range, which has over the years entered into "phablet" territory. Though it
sports a modest 5.4-inch display, the 12 mini integrates all the trappings of a
modern iPhone including 5G connectivity, A14 Bionic processor, dual 12MP
cameras with optical image stabilization, Face ID authentication and more.

Word of a soft demand first surfaced in
November
 with TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi
Kuo modeling lower than expected
demand.

RE: thinking of up grading phones

2021-03-11 Thread Simon A Fogarty
I've thought about this myself,

I wondered how we would get on if you could have the tip of your nose as a
finger print on your phone so if you do have wet fingers,
You could use your nose?

If the iPhone 13 doesn't have a touch ID
option, that's what I'm going to do. I'm glad if I don't want to use faceID I
don't have to. I do like touch ID a lot, though, because if I want to purchase
an app, all I have to do, is just put my thumb on the home button. My phone
makes a little ding, and I've purchased my app. Its very easy.

Re: new Ipad air

2021-03-11 Thread Brad Snyder
If you want an iPad with 128 GB of storage, you'll need to get the standard
iPad, which is a very capable device and should be all you'll need to do most
things.
My wife has the seventh generation version of the standard iPad with 128 GB of
storage, and she is very happy with this device. The eighth generation has a
step newer processor, and should be even more capable of doing whatever it is
you need to do.

You could try reversing what you did to get them off, but not knowing how you
did that, I’m not sure.

Otherwise, you could import tham into iTunes and then sync your phone with

RE: Putting pictures back on the phone from the computer

2021-03-11 Thread Richard Turner
You could try reversing what you did to get them off, but not knowing how you
did that, I'm not sure.

Otherwise, you could import tham into iTunes and then sync your phone with
itunes making sure that photos are checked for syncing.

There’s nothing wrong with using pass codes, but face ID is perfectly usable by
a blind person. I find it more convenient then a passcode myself.

I’ve always stuck to passcode. I don’t see the use of Face ID since I’m blind,
and my degstarity is not the greatest for Touch ID.

It isn't that hard, but if your 8 is working fine, you may want to wait
until we hear more details on what the iPhone 13 has to offer this fall. Rumor
has it that it may contain both touch ID and Face ID.

But, if you really need to upgrade sooner, you will probably find good
deals on the 11.

Check with your carrier if you are thinking about the 12 since some
carriers charge more for 5 g service, even if they do not currently offer it
since that is part of the iPhone 12.

Hi,

You can have two faces stored, but they can't be masked. In iOS 14.5, if you
are masked and are wearing an unlocked Apple Watch, the watch will unlock your
phone.

new Ipad air

2021-03-11 Thread Larry Lumpkin
I was looking at the new Ipad air to see what was available. It seems I saw
the models jump from gb64 to gb256. Is there not a gb128 model?

I agree with Sieghard on all counts.

Face ID works quite well, blind or not, and also finger dexterity might make
entering a passcode hard, but it shouldn’t effect touch ID since you just have
to touch the home button after training it, and training it is just touching it
at slightly different angles until it learns your finger.

And, on upgrading, unless you need a new phone right now because your current
phone is malfunctioning, wait and see what the 13 offers, plus, the 11 prices
will drop when the 13 comes out.

Not sure what being blind has to do with Face Id and being able to unlock your
phone way easier and faster. I really hate it now when I have to unlock my
phone in a store or authenticate a purchase and wearing my mask requires me to
put in my passcode. I have an Apple Watch so I can't wait for 14.5 getting
released because Apple has made it possible to do all that with Face Id and a
mask on as long as you also wear your Apple Watch. I often want to check
something when I am walking along with my dog and with Face I d I can just pull
my phone out of it's belt case with my right hand, I can usually manage a swipe
up and then I just glance at my phone and it unlocks. If iI have to enter my

It isn't that hard, but if your 8 is working fine, you may want to wait until
we hear more details on what the iPhone 13 has to offer this fall. Rumor has it
that it may contain both touch ID and Face ID.

But, if you really need to upgrade sooner, you will probably find good deals on

Check with your carrier if you are thinking about the 12 since some carriers
charge more for 5 g service, even if they do not currently offer it since that
is part of the iPhone 12.

Masks & Face ID

2021-03-11 Thread sherrywells1157
I have an IPhone 8 so still use touch id. When you set that up you can set
it up for more than one finger. With face id, can you set it up with more
than one face? If so, you could have both masked & unmasked faces for use
in unlocking the phone. I'm guessing this isn't possible or one of you
would have done it. I'm just curious though since it would make sense to
allow more than one face just as it does to allow more than one finger.

Apple reportedly cuts iPhone 12 mini production amid tepid demand

Apple reportedly cuts iPhone 12 mini production amid tepid demand
Mikey CampbellMar 10, 2021

Apple has informed partner suppliers that it has reduced iPhone 12 mini
production plans for the first half of 2021, with manufacturing of some
specialty parts suspended altogether, according to a report on Wednesday.

Citing industry sources familiar with the matter, Nikkei reports major
suppliers were recently informed of the production shift that marks a change in
Apple's procurement strategy. Prior to the reported downward revision, the tech
giant was aggressively buying semiconductors, printed circuit boards and
displays amid a worldwide parts shortage.

Apple is targeting output at around 75 million iPhone units for the first half
of 2021, down 20% from December 2020, the report says. Much of that downgrade
is blamed on iPhone 12 mini. Nikkeisources note that demand for other iPhone
models like the iPhone 12 Proremains strong.

Today's report echoes rumblings out of Apple's Asian supply chain in
Januarywhen Pegatron supposedly saw reduced orders for the diminutive iPhone.
Foxconn, which is tasked with assembling the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max,
received an increase in orders for those models during the same period.

The BEST MagSafe Accessories for iPhone 12! (So Far!)

Word of a soft demand first surfaced in November with TF Securities analyst
Ming-Chi Kuo modeling lower than expected demand.

If the iPhone 13 doesn't have a touch ID
option, that's what I'm going to do. I'm glad if I don't want to use faceID I
don't have to. I do like touch ID a lot, though, because if I want to purchase
an app, all I have to do, is just put my thumb on the home button. My phone
makes a little ding, and I've purchased my app. Its very easy.

RE: thinking of up grading phones

2021-03-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I would highly recommend not to upgrade now. It's already mid March and whil
the new 2021 phones are still 6 months away, an iPhon e8 is a good phone and I
assume it probably works well. Especially if you were thinking of buying an
iPhone 12 it is better to wait, if you can get a really good deal on an iPhone
11 and if you don't care to have Touch Id as well as Face Id and you are not
concerned about 5G and what the Lidar capable hardware might be capable of with
respec tto blindness related app s then its OK to get an iPhone 11 now. In my
opinion the 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max are a waste of money and they don't give a
blind person a lot of advantages and as I said, I strongly discourage anybody
from the iPhone 12 models because of their first generation 5G support, lack of
Lidar except of in the Pro Max and maybe the Pro (I forget if only the Pro Max
has it or also the Pro), but I know the regular 12 and 12 SE definitely don't
have it.
If you are somebody who likes to get more than 2 or even 3 years out of an
iPhone the iPhone 13 will in my opinion be the way to go.

Best regards,
Sieghard

a phone without the home key? Am wanting to upgrade.

RE: thinking of up grading phones

2021-03-11 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And with Face Id you simply look at yoru phone instead of putting your finger
on the home button, as others pointed out, it's just as easy and seamless and
in some cases it works even better in others not. It seems there is a pretty
high probability that this Fall's iPhone will have both which would of course
be great.

The nice thing is, you don't have to use face ID if you don't want to.
I remember a while ago, I talked to someone at apple accessibility.
They were very helpful, and told me, that if you didn't want to use face ID,
you could use your pass-code instead. If the iPhone 13 doesn't have a touch ID
option, that's what I'm going to do. I'm glad if I don't want to use faceID I
don't have to. I do like touch ID a lot, though, because if I want to purchase
an app, all I have to do, is just put my thumb on the home button. My phone
makes a little ding, and I've purchased my app. Its very easy.

Thanks Brad for pointing that out.
I keep forgetting to tell people about that. It can be rather annoying when
the phone is just a tiny banner.

If you are using iOS 14, you should be aware there is a setting to minimize the
appearance of the Phone app during a call, making it appear as a small banner,
rather than the traditional full screen view with keypad visible.

You can change this and restore the original appearance during calls as follows:
1. Go to Settings > Phone.
2. Swipe to Incoming Calls, and double tap to open.
3. Select Full Screen as your desired display style.

The description of that setting says, During audio calls, automatically switch
to the speaker when not holding your iPhone to your ear.
Meaning that if you put the phone by your ear, and pull it away, it will
automatically switch to speaker.
Or, if you just place your hand over the upper half of the phone and pull it
away, it will switch to speaker.
The keypad should show up if you use Siri to place a call.
You can also open the phone app, and double tap on keypad which is the 4th tab
along the bottom of the screen.
The two finger double tap to answer or hang up is a VoiceOver function. It will
not work unless VoiceOver is active.

RE: a couple of original SE basic questions

2021-03-11 Thread Shirley Tracy
Following the question you just answered for someone else on the list, I have a related query: Sometimes, I have a need to access the key pad after someone has called me on my IPhone. How can I open it while I’m already on the call? Is it even possible? Tks. Shirley Tracy From: Richard TurnerSent: Wednesday, March 10, 2021 11:45 PMTo: viphone@googlegroups.comSubject: Re: a couple of original SE basic questions there is a setting under the VoiceOver settings, Audio called auto select speaker in call that should be on.The description of that setting says, During audio calls, automatically switch to the speaker when not holding your iPhone to your ear.Meaning that if you put the phone by your ear, and pull it away, it will automatically switch to speaker.Or, if you just place your hand over the upper half of the phone and pull it away, it will switch to speaker. The keypad should show up if you use Siri to place a call. You can also open the phone app, and double tap on keypad which is the 4th tab along the bottom of the screen. The two finger double tap to answer or hang up is a VoiceOver function. It will not work unless VoiceOver is active.HTH,  Richard "You know," said Arthur, "it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space, that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young.""Why, what did she tell you?""I don't know, I didn't listen."-- Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy > On Mar 10, 2021, at 8:26 PM, Joseph Hudson wrote:> > Well, if I understand your question. RE: thinking of up grading phones

You won't regret making the upgrade. Don't waste your time or money on the

It isn't that hard, but if your 8 is working fine, you may want to wait until
we hear more details on what the iPhone 13 has to offer this fall. Rumor has it
that it may contain both touch ID and Face ID.
But, if you really need to upgrade sooner, you will probably find good deals on
the 11.
Check with your carrier if you are thinking about the 12 since some carriers
charge more for 5 g service, even if they do not currently offer it since that
is part of the iPhone 12.

No there isn’t. I went from an iPhone 7 and a Galaxy S7, both of which have

get to the home page or bring up the app switcher. You also use the other

web browser on a computer,

If it’s an android,

There is a simplar product called (from memory) find my droid,

Either tool can let you remotely connect to the device either sounding an alerm,

Sending a message to it or remotely wiping the device so it’s not useable by
anyone else.

The android find my droid,

I’m not sure of the details these daysbut there must be something on the net
that your friend can check out.
