Yes that is a good start and I will let you know once the Mac app is there.
Don't worry it won't be to long. :)

Re: Shortcut for typing a period ?

2012-06-16 Thread Scott Howell
You have to do the tap in a rhythum. You will have to practice, but it should
be a tap followed by another tap in quick succession. No more than 1 second
apart.. Practice and you will get there. Basically you need to tap so VO
inserts or says space and quickly tap again so it is interpreted correctly. I
had to learn this myself and sometimes I still manage to mess up. :)

Re: Paprika - recipe manager app for iOS and Mac

2012-06-16 Thread Scott Howell
Sieghard,

Thank you for your comments and I will share them with Christine. I hope that
anyone who does purchase either or both versions will rate the app and maybe
write a review in the app store. I really believe that when you take the time
to thank devs via the app store and mention accessibility you are raising
awareness. I know it may not seem like much, but I do read reviews of apps
before I purchase them and I pay attention to what reviewers are saying. You
can sort through the group that is providing valuable feedback and the group
that just wants to complain about nothing (in some cases).
And yes devs do read the comments and base decisions on future updates based on
comments. Well that is if the dev wants to continue selling his/her app. :)
Thanks again Sieghard for the positive feedback.

Re: Editing text in iPhone

2012-06-16 Thread Scott Howell
ALthough you are entitled to your opinion, I would have to disagree with your
statement concerning the editing functions as being junk. There certainly is
some learning curve which is true with about anything. I would have to say the
editing functionality works well and I have used it on several occasions with
great success. I point this out because I want others to have another opinion
and understand that they should give it a go before assuming it is junk.
I think the thing that throws many users and especially those used to how
editing is done in the world of WIndows screen readers the learning curve will
be a bit more.

Paprika - recipe manager app for iOS and Mac

2012-06-16 Thread Scott Howell
All,

A while back there was a discussion of the Paprika app for the iPhone/iPod,
iPad, and there is also a version for the Mac. I worked with the devs to
address some accessibility issues with the iOS versions. I am thrilled to
report that both apps are fully accessible. If you are looking for a very
flexible, fully-featured recipe and meal planning app, and want to have the
ability to sync recipes, meal plans, and grocery lists across all devices, then
you will want to purchase Paprika.
I really have to throw my support behind these devs because when I approached
them and provided information about VoiceOver etc. Christine (one of the devs)
really took it upon herself to learn VoiceOver. We kept in touch and she asked
a lot of questions and really was interested in learning more than just how to
label buttons etc. To say the support is excellent would be an understatement.
I have worked with a number of devs who have done a lot to make their apps
accessible and I am sure many of you have as well. However, when a dev really
digs in and even starts looking at changing APIs and so forth in order to
ensure accessibility says a lot, In fact they are also working hard to make the
Mac version of their app just as accessible.
Here are links to both iOS versions. Yes there are two different versions and
considering the layout I can understand why they elected to go with two
separate versions.

Paprika Recipe Manager app for iPhone/iPod,
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/paprika-recipe-manager-for/id406732590?mt=8

Paprika Recipe Manager for iPad,
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/paprika-recipe-manager-get/id392408028?mt=8

If you do purchase either or both apps I would like to hear your thoughts.

Re: WWDC: What's new in iOS 6.0

Ben, if you were expecting news on a new iPHone then you were going to be
let-down. This is not the conference for new hardware. I would not anticipate
anything from APple until later this year. I cannot recall APple really talking
about new iPhones at a WWDC.

And I could go pull the information from the link and post it for you, but I do

So I guess when you find the time you can investigate the link on your own.

Re: Is Cobo books accessible and easy to use?

Hi Anne,

One thing I have been meaning to ask is if Kobo works well with Braille
displays which is my preferred method of reading. I suspect so, but wanted to
ask in the event there were any issues I need to keep in mind when reading the
books.

THanks,

Re: Looktel apps do not work accurately for me

2012-06-08 Thread Scott Howell
Grant if you have not dropped the devs a note I would encourage you to do so.
There must surely be something going on because if taking pictures works well
then there seems to be little reason the app cannot identify money. Have you
tried removing and reinstalling the app? I have no idea if this would help, but
may be worth trying. For me the identification happens very quickly and I have
used the app with an iPhone 4 and 4S. This is a curious issue.

That is very interesting because the LookTell apps have worked very well for
me. The INote app was very disappointing.

As far as I know yes. However, you hold the C key down right after the startup
chime and hold it until the drive starts to spin. Of course this thread is no
longer iOS related, so best we stop here. :)

Yeah Ricardo, but man those would make nice boxes to run Ubutu on. :)

Re: free macs

2012-06-06 Thread Scott Howell
I sure would. However, you would want to use these as Linux boxes or if you
choose to use Tiger or Leopard, understand these OSes are not being supported
any longer. So, software is not being patched for security issues etc. If
either meets the specs for Snow Leopard, then you will be fine for a little
while.

Re: A Time to Wear iPhone Around my Neck

Hey Brett thanks for sharing and you know perhaps we should create a tie that
has a handy iPhone pocket built-in to the backside of the tie. Now bet that is
one nobody has come up with. Well now that I mentioned it I should probably go
patent the idea. :)

And for women there is even a bra that will allow you to carry your iphone as
well. Amazing the ways you can carry such a device. Around my neck? Yeah it
would not be swinging on the end of that rope for sure. :) If the idea is for
easy access you know Scottevest even makes shirts with inside pockets and not
to be left out, for you gents you can stuff yours in your drawers if you know
what I mean. :)

Re: iGrill (bluetooth thermometer review

2012-06-03 Thread Scott Howell
Fred,

I Believe there is at least one company that makes a fork that will audibly
provide the temp. The difference in this case is the IGrill will let you
measure the temp remotely and accessibly wich is rather nice. I have not
purchased one of these myself, but if you smoke any kind of meat I can see how
this device would be very handy and especially if it is really cold outdoors. :)
And someone was curious if you could use it in an oven and yes you can from
what I was told.

Scott,

I would suggest you send your request and concerns about the app to the company
that develops iGrill. I know they are rather pleased to have made the
accessibility changes and may be willing to make a few more tweaks. I have
found in more cases than not developers who are willing to make corrections for
accessibility. I had considered the Igrill as well, but your review has
certainly peaked my interest again. I like to smoke meat as well and this would
be a nice solution and especially when we put turkey on for smoking around

smokers since I just had to trash my old bullet smoker which gave up the ghost.
Thanks for the great review.

Re: battery issues since upgrading to 5.1.1

2012-06-02 Thread Scott Howell
Hey Joe,

Well it has been a while now and my battery issues have completely been
resolved. I have absolutely no clue how or why. I still need to look at my
wife's phone, but I suspect I know what her issue is and it may be related to
either an incident she had or a corrupt install. However, the issue must not be
to bad because she is not after me to do something about it. :)

Re: IOS development

2012-06-01 Thread Scott Howell
All of this chatter about programming reminds me that I have been wanting to
ask a question. I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent, but the little
programming I tried to learn became a bit confusing in trying to remember all
of the syntax etc. THis was a really long time ago when I tried to learn
Pascal. In any case I would love to learn objective C. So, what is a good book
that can help take the uninformed to informed. :) In other words how does one
get started and especially in understanding classes etc. I'm sure I could run
about the web and look at all sorts of sample code, but I believe you need to
have a foundation to build on. I'm probably more interested in development from
the angle of trying to help developers make their apps accessible. I do not see
myself developing apps for sale. :) My full-time job keeps me fed, housed, and
able to afford apps. :)
Any advice would be appreciated. I realize this is not a developers list but my
interest is in furthering the goal of accessibility for iOS and Mac apps.

I also had the earphone cover tear on the Defender case I had for my former 3GS

They are a very good company and do stand behind their products.

Re: Blindside the Game

2012-05-26 Thread Scott Howell
Hey Raul, ok that was the bummer for me. The game was pretty short. I wonder if
they plan other episodes they would charge for or the will give those to people
who purchase the game and not sure what the plans are going forward.
Either way the game is another demonstration of the capabilities of the iPhone
and iPad.

THe only other option is to convence Apple that this could be another keyboard
option which then it would have to be integrated into the OS. There would have
to be a fair amount of interest before it would be considered because it would
likely not be a trivial change.

Re: Breaking Out of Mail Jail

2012-05-24 Thread Scott Howell
Sandy, not sure what you mean at all. ONce you return to the home screen Mail
is effectively in the background and is no longer on the screen. Yes it remains
in the app switcher, but any app you launch will remain there unless you remove
it.

Re: What is the purpose of the Notification Center?

2012-05-24 Thread Scott Howell
Sandy,

The weather is only one aspect of the notification center. THe notification
center can contain alerts from other apps such as text messages, Mail, apps
that track the delivery of packages, and so much more. The notification center
is anything but superfluous . Prior to the notification center you may have
gotten an alert from an appointment on your calendar, a text message etc. and
pretty much if you missed it you would have to go look at each app for any
possible alerts. Notification center contains all that information in one
place.
You will get other points of view on this, but I think you will find
notification center to be very valuable. Btw, I moved the weather app off the
home screen, so honestly having this information quickly available is welcome.

Re: help with Ibooks?

2012-05-22 Thread Scott Howell
Fred, if I recall correctly once it is downloaded you should have gotten a
popup that would let you select to open it in iBooks. I tried this only once,
so am doing this from memory. If that was not the case for you I will grab
another book and try again. I'll specifically look for the same book you
downloaded.

Re: Recipe App

I highly recommend Paprika. In fact if you purchase now you will benefit from
some incredible work being done on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac versions of this
incredible app. The developers of Paprika are absolutely incredible and I
sincerely mean that.
The current versions are pretty accessible and you will find them overall very
good, but again even better is yet to come and that is all I can tell you for
now. :)

Re: Status Item

2012-05-19 Thread Scott Howell
iPads require 10 watts and the USB port on a computer only delivers five watts.
However, apparently it is possible for the iPad to charge, but very slowly.
This of course is not the most effective or recommended way to charge the iPad.

SOunds like you have something configured incorrectly. If you like, write me

be able to help you. This really is not the place to go into extensive

There are multiple reasons why open wireless networks might have done

Until you can actually confirm by yourself that its accepting 11G

Of course, you could try resetting the phone which from memory solved

Hi Mary,

Yes this is even with the screen locked. I have not tracked it down to any
specific application, but of course the variables are so numerous it may be
difficult to track it down. Thus may require rebuilding from scratch, but
hopefully not necessary.

battery issues since upgrading to 5.1.1

2012-05-14 Thread Scott Howell
All,

Just curious if anyone has noticed their battery dropping more quickly since
upgrading to 5.1.1. My wife who is not using VO and I have both noticed that on
average we are seeing a drop of about 3 percent per hour. We restored her phone
last night to see if this would correct the problem, but it has not. In fact I
also noticed that with her phone when powered off and not connected to a
charger, the phone turns itself back on and this is consistent. I will be
trying a few things to see if we can mitigate the problem, but it is curious.

Re: Calling All Chess Players For Help

2012-05-11 Thread Scott Howell
HIARCS is not and as far as I can determine will ever be accessible. I tried
working with the developer on/off for over a year and I just got the usual "I'm
going to work on that, but". Which in the end was pretty much telling me "I'm
not going to do it."
So, if you want to try contacting him Mark to see if he would still consider
making it accessible, good luck. This was one of the first chess apps I
purchased and I keep it around as a reminder like with Documents To Go as
examples of where some deves will blow so much smoke you get anal emphysema.

Re: Apple blew it.

2012-05-08 Thread Scott Howell
I'm not so sure such a feature would be possible. VoiceOver is not bolted on it
is a core component of the OS. Although a nice idea, just not practical.
Unfortunately we hav have no idea how many people have written to Apple
informing them of the issue. So, if only a few people are having the problem as
compared to the entire user population, they will prioritize accordingly. You
have to understand that in the scheme of things it really comes down to
resources and priorities balanced against those resources. I can very much
appreciate the issue of not being able to use your Braille display. I was very
much in that situation until iOS 5.0 came out and I had my display for nearly a
year.

This is not an issue I have encountered. Have you determined a pattern? For
example, have you found this issue occurs when using a certain app? Have you
tried (yes I know it's painful) reinstalling from scratch? Sometimes something
does become corrupted or some software conflict has occurred that only seems to
be resolved when starting from a complete restore back to "factory" settings.

Well it may be a little early to tell if this issue has been addressed, but I
am not seeing the issue where occasionally the phone app would launch when I
unlocked the screen. So, this may be one item not addressed in the release
notes. I guess only time will tell.

Re: Digit-Eyes update in the App Store

2012-05-06 Thread Scott Howell
Hi Nancy,

I'm not sure how interesting this is to the list; however, I wil post this much
for the record. I just launched Digit-Eyes in a totally dark room and the flash
did activate. I did not realize this would occur. I suspect the situation I was
dealing with may have just been at the level in which the flash is not
activated. So, I will try a few tests to see at what level of lighting does the
flash activate.
There may even be an instance where I created a shadow, so I'm not sure. I will
say again that Digit-Eyes is performing very nicely indeed. I'm sure the
improved camera of the 4 and 4S as well as having the flash does help.

Re: Digit-Eyes update in the App Store

2012-05-05 Thread Scott Howell
I have to say that I am very impressed with DigitEyes now. I just installed the
update and I certainly was one who had issues with some of the earlier
versions. I can now with confidence recommend this app. In fact I find it
nearly as fast as Red Laser and the information returned is great. THe only
thing I would add is the ability to toggle the flash which does help when
lighting conditions are not optimal.

Re: elusive OCR App

2012-05-04 Thread Scott Howell
David,

I concur and this is why I have not bothered with any of the color ID apps for
the iPhone. There are likely instances where the iPhone's camera may perform
sufficiently, but ingeneral lighting is always going to be an issue and one
even the iPhone cannot overcome, yet. :)

The problem I gather is that when you plug the device in you loose speech

not pose a problem. I do not have one so cannot test it out.

Re: Can anyone recommend a blue tooth or usb folding keyboard for an iPhone 4S

2012-04-26 Thread Scott Howell
Hi AMy,

No problem and sorry for the silly question about the power switch. I realize
when I asked the question what my mind got stuck on was that the switch had
actually two on positions. :) Now why I had gotten that idea in my mind I have
no clue, but obviously on and off are two positions. Although it sounds like a
nice keyboard, i probably would find typing really tricky since I really need
pretty much standard keys. :) I actually tried one of the folding Verbatim
keyboards and found it to be a little to large when folded, but worse the
number keys were entirely to small and not where they belong. :)
Thanks for the reply.

Re: batteries in bt keyboard

2012-04-25 Thread Scott Howell
Melissa,

If you orient the keyboard so the power button is on the right side the battery
compartment is on the left side.
There is a screw-on cap that once you remove it just note the orientation of
the batteries. I believe the batteries go into the keyboard positive end first.
THe positive end is the end with the bump.

Yes, those pieces are what holds it in your ear. There should be a short cable

Re: lost my presets on Tune In Radio

2012-04-23 Thread Scott Howell
I upgraded recently and did not loose my presets. I do have an account, but not
sure this has any baring on the issue.

Re: Era Jawbone headset

2012-04-23 Thread Scott Howell
Well someone who has this earphone will no doubt chime-in. First the thing that
is an earpiece is likely the earpiece. The Era likely has a loop on the
earpiece that you tuck inside the crease of your ear flap. Yes that thing that
sticks out of the side of your head and has several creases in it. Yes, you
actually stuff the earpiece in your ear and when that loop is placed properly
in the flappy ear thing on your head it will stay very nicely. Yes, even if you
were to toss your head about like one of those headbangers going metal
thrashing mad.
The earpiece likely came with a couple of different loop sizes to fit different
flappy ears. So, find the one that fits the flap and get flappy happy.
Now the other thing that looks like a battery is really the wall charger. You
plug a very short cable into that and then the earpiece. This cable is not very
flappy in fact and is incredibly short. Well ok, I have the Jawbone Icon and
the cable was about three inches. I would recommend plugging the cable into the
earpiece before connecting to the ac adapter. Btw, I imagine your ac adapter
has the foldable prongs.
Maybe that will help until someone smarter than I can shed more light on the
subject.

Re: Bluetooth Keyboard Backspacing Problem

2012-04-19 Thread Scott Howell
Well that would be the $64,000 question and for which I have no answer. For me
it was generally fixed by banging the escape key a few times. I have to admit
it was pretty weird and I thought at first it was something I was doing wrong.
So far the only keyboard I have really liked is the APple keyboard. I wish
APple would make one that folds. :)

Re: Bluetooth Keyboard Backspacing Problem

2012-04-19 Thread Scott Howell
Austin,

Funny you mention this because I had tried one of the Verbatim keyboards and
there was a key I believe the first in the top row that would cause a similar
problem on an iPHone 4S. THe problem was for me intermittent . I ended up
returning the keyboard not for that reason, but because I could not get used to
the number keys which were about half the size of all the letter keys and not
in the same location. I think Verbatim has a nice product, but there are some
things they could do to improve it.
So, back to your question. Yes I have encountered this, but not consistently.
I suspect it is a key that is mapped in some odd way that is freaking out
either VO or the OS.
