Re: Can't change VoiceOver speech rate
Hi all, I ended up restoring my phone in iTunes then restoring from a backup, and the problem was still not resolved. Then I tried resetting my settings by using SettingsGeneralResetReset all settings. This resolved the problem, so it would seem that my preferences became corrupt somehow. In any case, at least none of my data was lost, and I am now up and running. After performing the backup and before restoring my phone, I did try a force reset and this did not resolve the problem. Thanks all for the suggestions. Well, I've never tried forcibly rebooting the phone as you've described. I would tend to reserve that for times when the phone is completely frozen and won't power off normally. However, when powering off the phone by holding down POWER for a couple of seconds then double-tapping on power off, the rate still hasn't changed when the phone is powered up again. Re: Can't change VoiceOver speech rate
I'm not sure which method you're referring to but from http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430 it says the following: How to restart Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of your device until the red slider appears. Then drag the slider to turn your device completely off. After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo. How to reset You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it. To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo. Re: Can't change VoiceOver speech rate
That is correct Chris. I like to think of the method of holding the POWER and HOME BUTTONS for ten seconds as analogous to unplugging a desktop computer or using some other means to force it to turn off when all normal shut down methods don't work. It is a last resort to unfreeze a device that won't reboot normally. In any case, I guess I could drop Apple Accessibility a line or try resetting my settings. I'll just have to decide whether my problem is really that big of a deal. I do like being able to slow down my speech rate from time to time to review something in detail. Thank you Christopher and Richard for the suggestions thus far. Re: Can't change VoiceOver speech rate
Thanks Donna! It definitely takes time to get used to listening to a voice that quickly, but if you're interested, you could try cranking up your rate a bit when you're just listening to system prompts (like opening the mail app and browsing to a folder) then slowing it down to read the actual content. Of course, this is assuming you can change your rate. :) Grant On Aug 16, 2014, at 11:23 AM, Donna merma...@bellsouth.net wrote: I don't have a solution to your problem. I just wanted to say...Wow!!! Re: Can't change VoiceOver speech rate
The skill is, developed by listening at the fastest speed comfortable until it becomes normal, then increase a little. do this repeatedly until 100% speed is achieved. I developed the skill several years ago, so 100% is a little slow for me. RE: Can't change VoiceOver speech rate
Hi Grant, Doing a reset by holding the power and home buttons may not be something you want to do every day and shouldn't have to do, but it also won't hurt. It will definitely reset more things than a simply shutdown and reboot of the phone and in your case I'd try it. I would probably remove all apps from the app switcher and do a regular reboot, then do the reset and while it may not fix your problem, I highly doubt it would hurt anything just as pressing the reset key on a computer won't hurt anything either. Re: Can't change VoiceOver speech rate
Hi Sieghard, I don't, of course, have access to how Apple set this up internally, but it is my opinion that forcibly resetting an iOS device simply forces the system to cut the power so that the device can reboot. That is why it is a useful command to perform when you cannot power off the phone by any normal means. It is therefore my view that if you can reboot your device normally, this force-reset method won't achieve anything or reset anything that a normal reboot wouldn't. To use another analogy, if my desktop PC has a problem that is not resolved by rebooting, why would it be resolved by unplugging the power cord while the PC is powered up, causing an improper shut down? I know this topic has come up before and other listers don't agree with my view, and I am more than happy to stand corrected and admit that I am totally out to lunch on this one. However, based on my understanding of the force-reset method, I am fairly sure I am correct about this. The reboot does more than the shut-down. I am not aware of everything it does, but one thing reboot does is clear and rebuild the driver stacks, such as bluetooth and wifi. Re: Can't change VoiceOver speech rate
If I may say so, your PC analogy is misleading. You don't unplug your PC when using the reset switch. On some mobile phones that i know of, and indeed other small memory-aware devices, when power is off, taking the battery out and reinserting it, will cause them to reset. (that is probably not possible in Apple's case, so the reset will function a bit differently.) Re: Can't change VoiceOver speech rate
Hi Flor, my point was that all those methods (unplugging a PC then plugging it back in, pressing the RESET button, holding POWER down for a few seconds) force the PC to shut down improperly. In other words, you are responding to a situation where you cannot properly shut down the computer through the user interface (e.g. the PC has frozen). I've yet to find a situation where a normal reboot doesn't resolve something, but an improper shut down does. You are thinking about some older phones and PDAs that stored user data in RAM. In those cases, when you removed the battery, this would cause the RAM to be erased meaning that you would have initialized the entire system. Un`fortunately, I do not remember where I read this information. It was a few years ago. That said, It came from a reputable source of technology info. That is why it is a useful command to perform when you cannot power off the phone by any normal means. It is therefore my view that if you can reboot your device normally, this force-reset method won’t achieve anything or reset anything that a normal reboot wouldn’t. To use another analogy, if my desktop PC has a problem that is not resolved by rebooting, why would it be resolved by unplugging the power cord while the PC is powered up, causing an improper shut down? I know this topic has come up before and other listers don’t agree with my view, and I am more than happy to stand corrected and admit that I am totally out to lunch on this one. However, based on my understanding of the force-reset method, I am fairly sure I am correct about this. RE: Can't change VoiceOver speech rate
Thanks David. This could well be true but it could also be the case that they were simply providing one easy way of doing that. According to support instructions provided by Jawbone for a Bluetooth headset, for example, simply turning Bluetooth off then on again resets the Bluetooth driver stack. Given this, I wonder whether a normal, soft reset would also do the same thing. https://jawbone.com/kb/articles/318.html In any case, I agree with Sieghard that a force-reset is unlikely to harm anything.
