Re: [New post] Get 50GB of iDrive iOS cloud storage for 99 cents per year

2014-04-29 Thread Christopher J Chaltain
I agree, if you just want to backup one system then going with another
external hard drive or two is perfectly adequate. The advantage to a
cloud based backup is that you can then have access to your backed up
files from multiple devices. Chances are, the cloud provider is also
going to be using some more sophisticated technologies to backup your
data and store it in multiple redundant places. It's more likely that
your external hard drive will have a problem when you go to restore from
it than a cloud provider won't be able to toss up your data upon request.

For me personally, I do use an external drive to backup most of what's
on my hard drive, including things like applications, documents and
books I've downloaded from the internet. I also use a cloud provider,
Ubuntu One from Canonical, in my case to have the folders and files I
update most frequently backed up in the cloud and accessible from
multiple devices. These files get synced in the cloud every time I
update them, which is more frequently than I kick off a backup to my
external drive. This also means my most accessed files are available
from everywhere. This has come in handy when I needed a piece of data at
the doctor's office or the bank, and all I had to do was bring up a file
that had been synced to the cloud from my PC.

Unfortunately, Ubuntu One is going away in a few months, and I need to
find another cloud provider that's got all of the features I've come to
depend on in Ubuntu One.

Yeah, be careful with this service. Quirky interface is one thing, but
mysterious charges beyond the $0.99 is quite another.

Hi, yes but the 100 gb you get from these rewards is good for only 1
year. My personal recommendation if you want to have good file backup
storage is to purchase a new hard drive and a program like Casper, which
is very speech friendly and will either do nightly or weekly backups, or
whenever you connect an external drive.

I did download this iDrive app and got the .99 cent upgrade with no
problems. It is still uploading photos, videos, etc. now. I downloaded the
PC version, too, but it is pretty inaccessible to me. I do have iCloud but
it does not provide enough room for all my videos and photos since I have a
64 GB iPhone.
   I guess I just can’t resist a bargain.
But the actual app seems to be pretty VO friendly so far.

new iDrive customer, but otherwise the deal is exactly as good as it sounds:

"When iDrive first told me about this, I was

discount or limited-time offer,'" Broida reports. "To get it, you need one
of the aforementioned iOS devices on which to install the iDrive app and
sign up for an account. (Never mind the in-app purchase options shown in the
App Store; you should see the 99-cent deal once you swipe through the
getting-started screens.)"

Re: [New post] Get 50GB of iDrive iOS cloud storage for 99 cents per year

2014-04-29 Thread Sherrie
WordPress.comI got my iTunes receipt for 99 cents. I got emails from iDrive
telling me I had the upgrade.
I have spent a lot of time trying to undo the original items uploaded.
My advice is to not let it start automatically backing up until you decide
exactly which items you want included. My problem was that I have way more
than 50 GB in the basic things they assume people want such as documents,
music, pictures, videos, and 20 GB of music got uploaded before I realized.
Once it is backed up it is hard to remove it with Jaws on the website. I can
find the information by clicking folders but can’t figure out how to “choose”
items to delete.
I found it easier to check all the items as exclude and then to go to the
folders in Windows Explorer and use the application key to add the folder to
the iDrive backup. These were the things like Favorites, contacts, Windows
Live Mail, specific folders in my documents and specific folders in my
pictures. It gives you a projected total but I did not realize this at first.
The iDrive application has to be navigated with the Jaws key but I have managed
to do this most of the time Sometimes I can then use the left mouse simulation
and switch to the PC curser, but not always.
The Sync folder is easier to use. Unfortunately, I did not check the size of
the folders I originally put in there so it had too much. Today I trimmed down
the folders to under my 50 limit and they seem to be uploading. It does take
time when one is uploading such large files to begin with
I think the Sync folder will work somewhat like the Dropbox folder.
.

There is a scheduler where you can set up a specific time for backups and I
plan to use this once I get it straightened out. I want this for the things I
mentioned before that have to be in their original positions to work properly,
like Favorites and Windows Live Mail.

I did look on the site and there is a blog where it explains about the 99 cents
price. And they do not have a credit card number for me since I use gift cards
for my iTunes account so I can’t get burned.

On the website there are lots of FAQ pages that are pretty helpful.

Yeah, be careful with this service. Quirky interface is one thing, but
mysterious charges beyond the $0.99 is quite another.

[cfsp key="adsense_336x280"]"Cloud-storage provider iDrive has extended this
appealing deal to owners of iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches," Rick Broida
reports for CNET. "You have to be a new iDrive customer, but otherwise the deal
is exactly as good as it sounds: 50GB of cloud storage for an impossibly low 99
cents per year."

"When iDrive first told me about this, I was sure it meant 99 cents for the
first year, then a more typical $50 to $100 each year after that. But a company
rep told me in no uncertain terms: 'It will be the same [99 cents] a year from
now. [This is not] a first-year discount or limited-time offer,'" Broida
reports. "To get it, you need one of the aforementioned iOS devices on which to
install the iDrive app and sign up for an account. (Never mind the in-app
purchase options shown in the App Store; you should see the 99-cent deal once
you swipe through the getting-started screens.)"

Broida reports, "By the way, although you need an iOS (or Android) device to
take advantage of this offer, once you have your iDrive account, you can use it
across all platforms: Windows, Windows Phone, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS."

2014-04-29 Thread Don & Cher
So is iDrive really backing up data on your PC in addition to your phone?
Thanks.

I did download this iDrive app and got the .99 cent upgrade with no problems.
It is still uploading photos, videos, etc. now. I downloaded the PC version,
too, but it is pretty inaccessible to me. I do have iCloud but it does not
provide enough room for all my videos and photos since I have a 64 GB iPhone.

I guess I just can’t resist a bargain.

But the actual app seems to be pretty VO friendly so far.

Re: [New post] Get 50GB of iDrive iOS cloud storage for 99 cents per year

2014-04-27 Thread Kelly Pierce
Fred,

If you have Windows 8.1, there is a folder named OneDrive that
automatically synchronizes your files to the cloud. Documents created
in Word and Notepad are automatically saved to OneDrive.

If you don’t have Windows 8.1, you need to download and install free
OneDrive software from Microsoft that synchronizes folders on your
computer to OneDrive.

Hi Kelly,

Just a bit of a clarification and comment for users outside the US. I just
had a look at this offer and one should mention that the 100 Gb you get by

RE: [New post] Get 50GB of iDrive iOS cloud storage for 99 cents per year

2014-04-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kelly,

I believe Box.com gives you 100 Gb of free storage, at least I got it a while
back although I have yet to use the service. I find Dropbox works so well and
of course OneDrive as well that I just can't be bothered with all the others.
Unfortunately I missed that initial OneDrive promotion because I was in the
Philippines at the time when they gave the first 100,000 people who converted
from Skydrive to OneDrive 100 Gb free for life. But having said this, I think
as time goes by, cloud storage becomes more popular and storage becomes less
expensive (which it does all the time) Microsoft will offer more storage
especially if you are maybe an Office 365 subscriber. On the other hand, $50
for 100 Gb of storage is actually quite inexpensive, that's about 96 Cents per
weekor less than 14 Cents per day. Dropbox charges $9.99 a month or $99 if you
pay for the year for the same 100 Gb, that's twice as much.

Sieghard

Re: [New post] Get 50GB of iDrive iOS cloud storage for 99 cents per year

2014-04-26 Thread Brent Harding
I signed up for the thing, just because I had spare Itunes credit around,
but I've always used Dropbox as a way to play stuff on my phone through the
speaker dock I have. I know it's a little bit of a waste to upload the files
and stream them back down, but there isn't any other way I know of to load
it on the phone without installing iTunes for Windows.

Hi Kelly,

Just a bit of a clarification and comment for users outside the US. I just
had a look at this offer and one should mention that the 100 Gb you get by
redeeming the Bing Rewards points is for 1 year only. Maybe this is good
marketing because some people may not notice this or think about it, then
they fill up their 100 Gb with all sorts of stuff and one year from now they
are told they better pay up or loose it.

Secondly, I am in Canada and when I just tried to sign up for a Bing Rewards
account I got a message that Bing Rewards are not yet available in my
country. I guess I carry on with my 25 Gb I had for quite some time. This
maybe isn't enough for thousands of pictures, but it's plenty for quite a
lot of regular documents.

Regards,
Sieghard

Another deal will be great for windows 8.1 users. Microsoft’s
OneDrive offers 110 GB of storage for free. 10 GB comes with the
computer. Another 100 GB is available by searching with Bing. I
accrued the 100 credits of Bing rewards in just one week. Now, all my
