I have a pretty good relationship with Winston Chen, the developer of the

He has given me permission to share the below information.

Note that no one yet knows the timing of the iOS/iPadOS subscription
model.

Also, he is quite confident that the group he mentions below who acquired
Voice Dream Reader will take good care of the app or he wouldn't have sold it
to them.

On yet another note before I share what Winston said, I agree with him
that the one-time charge model of app development is not sustainable if you
need an app to grow and change with current technology. If only one programmer
knows the code, and something happens to that developer, the app will die.
This way, you end up with a team maintaining the app.

  Here is what Winston said:

" Voice Dream Reader (both iOS and macOS versions), and the brand “Voice
Dream”, were acquired by Applause Group.

The pricing decision was made by Applause - I was not aware of the amount
and timing. But I totally support transitioning Voice Dream Reader to a
subscription model. The one-time-price model is not sustainable. I planned to
do it myself before the acquisition.

On a separate note, Scanner and Writer were not acquired, and they will
remain my apps. they will be renamed to VDScan and VDWrite, and under a new
company named Opus Noma.

There should’ve been communication about the acquisition but due to a
legal issue, I have not been able to announce it.

More from me about this soon..."

An official statement will be coming soon. What soon means, I have no
idea. Be patient.

And, at this time, VDScan and VDWrite will remain one-time purchases.

If you break the price down, it is about $5.00 a month, or $1.15 per week. I
think most people could give something up that would cover the cost.

2023-04-25 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm not sure what you're asking, but they couldn't just start charging those
people who bought Voice Dream Reader for a fixed price with the new
subscription fee. However, they could definitely discontinue support and
updates for the fixed price version and only support and update the
subscription version.

There's also a big difference between what is and isn't legal versus what is
and isn't allowed in the App Store. Companies get acquired all of the time and
product lines will come and go.

to put all customers under the subscription model, is this still legally
viable? By all customers I mean also all those customers that already paid for
the app in the past under the one-time payment model.

OK, this source has been completely verified. A friend of mine who didn't have
the app went to the Appstore and downloaded Voice Dream Reader. The app offers
1 week trial after which the user must pay a 59 dollar yearly subscription,
of course, the price probably is not the same for all countries or regions.

I'm glad that I won't have to pay for voice dream reader. However,
even if I did have to pay for the app, $59 per year is still a good
price. It is one of my most used apps on my iPhone. I just added a
ton of audio books to voice dream reader using iTunes. I love being
able to use a USBC to lightning cable. The copy sppeeds that my
zipped audio books copy over to my iPhone 13 pro max is incredibly
fast. It is great.

2023-04-25 Thread Richard Turner
I am not a lawyer, but I suspect it is up to the owner what they do.

However, I suspect that could be a huge PR problem.

At this point, they do not plan to do that and they give no indication that
they might.

I personally would have no issues if I had to subscribe. I know for some
people, that could be a difficult price to pay, but I think it is worth paying
for.

But I totally support transitioning Voice Dream Reader to a subscription model. The one-time-price model is not sustainable. I planned to do it myself before the acquisition. On a separate note, Scanner and Writer were not acquired, and they will remain my apps. they will be renamed to VDScan and VDWrite, and under a new company named Opus Noma. There should’ve been communication about the acquisition but due to a legal issue, I have not been able to announce it. More from me about this soon..." An official statement will be coming soon.  What soon means, I have no idea.  Be patient. And, at this time, VDScan and VDWrite will remain one-time purchases. HTH, Richard, USA.“Reality is the leading cause of stress for those who are in touch with it.”  --  Jane Wagner from The Search for Intelligent Life in the Universe My web site: https://www.turner42.com

RE: Voice Dream Reader for IOS, yearly suscription?

2023-04-25 Thread Leo Bado
I got a question. Is it legally allowed to change the business model for an
app in the Appstore? In other words, transitioning from the one-time payment
model into the subscription model?

OK, this source has been completely verified. A friend of mine who didn’t have
the app went to the Appstore and downloaded Voice Dream Reader. The app offers
1 week trial after which the user must pay a 59 dollar yearly subscription,
of course, the price probably is not the same for all countries or regions.

RE: Voice Dream Reader for IOS, yearly suscription?

2023-04-25 Thread Leo Bado
First and foremost, Richard, I want to thank you for providing such a reliable
information. Secondly, I would also like to know what is the source from
which some people are passing on what seems to be specific information on the
subscription model. I asked about Voice Dream reader in this list because I saw
bunches of WhatsApp messages giving, apparently, specific and detailed
information that made me suspicious.

Penny, and anyone else who have stated that current owners will not have to pay
for the subscription, could you say what your source is? I've seen no official
information yet. I have reached out to the company that bought the app, but
have not heard yet.

Hi Leo, et al.

I just heard about this and here is the answer I sent to the BlindApples list.

I have a pretty good relationship with Winston Chen, the developer of the Voice
Dream apps, so I wrote him directly and inquired.

He has given me permission to share the below information.

Note that no one yet knows the timing of the iOS/iPadOS subscription model.

Also, he is quite confident that the group he mentions below who acquired Voice
Dream Reader will take good care of the app or he wouldn't have sold it to them.

On yet another note before I share what Winston said, I agree with him that the
one-time charge model of app development is not sustainable if you need an app
to grow and change with current technology. If only one programmer knows the
code, and something happens to that developer, the app will die. This way, you
end up with a team maintaining the app.

Here is what Winston said:

" Voice Dream Reader (both iOS and macOS versions), and the brand “Voice
Dream”, were acquired by Applause Group.

The pricing decision was made by Applause - I was not aware of the amount and
timing. But I totally support transitioning Voice Dream Reader to a
subscription model. The one-time-price model is not sustainable. I planned to
do it myself before the acquisition.

On a separate note, Scanner and Writer were not acquired, and they will remain
my apps. they will be renamed to VDScan and VDWrite, and under a new company
named Opus Noma.

There should’ve been communication about the acquisition but due to a legal
issue, I have not been able to announce it.

More from me about this soon..."

An official statement will be coming soon. What soon means, I have no idea.
Be patient.

And, at this time, VDScan and VDWrite will remain one-time purchases.

HTH,

Richard, USA.

RE: Voice Dream Reader for IOS, yearly suscription?

2023-04-25 Thread Richard Turner

Voice Dream Reader for IOS, yearly suscription?

2023-04-25 Thread Leo Bado
Hi everyone, is it true that Voice Dream Reader for IOS is changing to a
yearly subscription model? Or is this just a rumor?

Best,

Leo Bado
