Over the years the show ran, you could almost say that Andy Griffith played
three separate Sheriff Taylor characters. There was the jovial country boy
from Season One, the voice of reason in Seasons 2-4, and a bit more serious
in Seasons 5-8. Obviously there is some overlap in the evolution of the
three. I see a lot of similarities between the 5th season and the color
years, as many of the showrunners had departed TAGS for Gomer Pyle, USMC.

A couple weeks ago in one of his excellent Mayberry History posts, Randy
Turner mentioned something in the episode "Bringing Up Opie" that occurred
only once in TAGS: Otis actually being formally charged with public
intoxication before being sentenced.

Watching that episode recently, I think I found another unique moment:
after Opie leaves the abandoned mine, he walks down the dirt road, kicking
a can, until meeting an older boy who lets Opie have some apples and sit in
the back of the truck if Opie lets him kick the can. That maybe 20 second
scene is totally silent, except for the background music (which I think is
the only time I heard that particular music in any episode). The older boy
is clearly talking to Opie - but we don't hear anything.

This small scene reminds me a lot of the old, original "Our Gang" movies,
before they became "talkies". I wonder if this was intentional, as a sort
of tribute to those old films, or just that the writers or director were
influenced by "Our Gang", which they probably watched as kids.

Do any of the "trained observers" out there recall any other "silent" scene
in TAGS like this one? (I'm not counting the episode where Gomer joins the
Marines, and Sgt. Carter polishes his boots, etc. which is also "silent",
because I think of that episode as the first "Gomer Pyle, USMC" episode.)

Joe from G.I.
Joe, If I am understanding your question correctly I believe the episode when
Ellie is running for city council (silly idea) and the men folk decide to show
them wimmin how silly an idea it is, shut down their credit lines at the
department stores, you see, but don't hear the exchanges with the women and the
store clerks along with musical instruments playing along with the scene.

Well my friends, I managed to survive a very emotionally packed night at my
50 year high school reunion. So much fun reliving old times with old
friends whom I have known since I was 6 years old. A few tears were even
shed by this overemotional guy. We were a class of 81 and we have lost
only 6 thus far, so we have indeed been very blessed in that regard.

The group just loved my "Special Reunion Mayberry Presentation " I did. I
received a standing ovation and so many wonderful comments following. Some
of the people there had not watched a TAGS episode since it was on TV back
in its hay day. They especially enjoyed the clip of Barney and Ramona's
reunion and that beautiful quote "The tears on my pillow bespeak the pain
in my heart".

We had kept my presentation a secret and the looks I received when I
arrived in full uniform and gun belt was precious. But word soon spread
that I was not a real policeman and that was when the fun began.

Time for me to purchase a new laptop. I was unable to load any of my
videos and music clips at first and I was just sick as it would have ruined
the entire evening. However, I was able to get off by myself and do some
work and was finally able to get things going. Good thing I tested
everything out when I got there and before I was to begin. Sometimes those
electronal marvels can be a real pain in the patoot. I noticed the cord
they provided had thin wires so I suspect that was the problem.

So Ken, did you have to at least hold your laptop up to the microphone for
folks to be able to hear it?

I've answered this question many times in the past,  and I'm happy to repeat
for this particular question.  (what job do I have in Mayberry)

I work for a telecommunications company in real life.  Im Mayberry I would work
for the Mayberry Bell Telephone
(aka May-Belle).   At night and on some weekends I would be Sara's backup.  She
has to sleep sometimes, so I take over the switchboard.  People still say
"Sarah Get me  "  I just set them up without explaining it is not Sarah.
Its a good way to find out what's going on..who's talkng to who etc...and yes
I've even heard the voice or Mr. Schwamp, a rare treat.  I know who is
moonshining, who is datin, who's going to win an election, and when out of town
guests are coming in.

So I've explained the "inside" part of my job.  The outside part is, I get to
team with another Mayberry favorite.  I go out and help build new lines with
Mr. McBeevee.  Ocassionally I get to walk in the trees with him, but more often
I work with him to run new drop wires to homes and Businesses.  I also collect
coins from the payphones, like at Walker's Drugs, and I do a litte repair.
Its pretty easy to keep up May-Belle because we only have on line that leaves
the town.  You probably know that the Mendlebright sisters give that a good
test every Sunday afternoon.  When I'm on the switchboard, I put my feet up
they talk so long..and you guessed it.. my feet fall asleep.

Barney keeps asking me and McBeeVee to install a hotline from his room to
Andy's house (like a Bat-phone!)  But Andy keeps saying the only Hotline in
Mayberry is needed at the ice house so someone can call and remind them to turn
the light off. LOL

I know that TVLand has been a hot topic on here at times, but I have to say
that I had a great six weeks this summer with Andy on the channel each
weekday morning, then I had a great day cleaning house all day today while
listening/watching Andy. I have played my DVD's all day on a holiday such
as this, but there's just something to having the show on actual TV.

In the Christmas episode, it dawned on me that the jail appears not to have
glass on the windows in the cells. Mr. Weaver stood on a box and held tight
to the cell window bars, but there was no glass in sight. I remember on

(Dear Lori,

I had the same question when I was building the Taylor Home Inn B&B.

If you watch the color episodes, you?ll see that the kitchen door is in the
proper place, leading out to the back yard.

In the black and white episodes, it actually leads where the driveway
should be on the side of the house. It? is an unexplained inaccuracy on ?the
show. One of several.

Sincerely,

Dave Scheuermann
Taylor Home Inn )

Dave---thanks for confirming this for me. A few years ago I used the b&w
episodes as a guide and drew a floor plan of the Taylor
house and found that the back door had to lead to the driveway! Those narrow
high windows on the right side of the front
porch are in the kitchen over and behind the stove! Curious--

Patty, It's true, a lot of underage young men lied about their age and joined
the armed forces in WWII.  I had an uncle that ran away and joined the Navy at

and they mentioned the youngest to do that was 12 years old.  Before being
discovered as being underage he had won two medals.  He was dis-honorably

The Sazerac is a local New Orleans variation of an old-fashioned cognac or
whiskey cocktail, named for the Sazerac de Forge et Fils brand of cognac that
was its original prime ingredient. The drink is some combination of cognac or
rye whiskey, absinthe or Herbsaint, and Peychaud's Bitters; it is distinguished
by its preparation method.[2] It is sometimes referred to as the oldest known
American cocktail,[3] with origins in pre–Civil War New Orleans, Louisiana,
though there are much earlier published instances of the word cocktail.[4]

The defining feature of the Sazerac is the preparation using Peychaud's
Bitters[5] and two chilled old-fashioned glasses, one swirled with a light wash
of absinthe for the slight taste and strong scent.[6] The second chilled glass
is used to mix the other ingredients, then the contents of that are poured or
strained into the first.[7] Various anisettes such as Pastis, Pernod, Ricard
and Herbsaint are common substitutes for absinthe when it is not available; in
New Orleans Herbsaint is most commonly used.[8]

when Andy and Peggy came back to the house after their date, the way they were

Several kind folks emailed me reminding me that Mayberry folks did indeed
have charge accounts and did not always pay cash. I purposely did not
mention that in my post about credit as I guess I did not consider that as
a debt as the folks would most likely have paid their accounts in full at
the end of each month. I know in our small town all the merchants offered
free charge accounts for the convenience of their customers. Of course
everyone was expected to pay the account in full at the end of each month
as my mother always did, so I don't think people would have run up very
large amounts.

I love it when people respond to me about things I post. It means someone
is actually reading them and is interested enough to continue the
conversation. To me that is the greatest thing about the Digest.

Dear Tags,I enjoyed looking at the behind the scenes of the unknown character
of TAGS. Every night in Birmingham, AL channel WTTO-21 CW shows TAGS from 10pm
to 11pm CT. They showedthe Gold Truck the other night, and I foundseveral
bloopers, I was shocked at how manyI found. I actually went to Youtube and
foundthe episode and watched it. When Andy firstpulls up to the courthouse and
everyone is cheering, there is a man right in front of himthat looks like Nate
Bracy from the Class Reunion.I saw him there, out in the audience down
thestreet, standing by Aunt Bee and waving and cheering when Andy would speak.
There was 2 ladies that had umbrellas next to where Aunt Beewas and then when
Andy told everyone to go homeAunt Bee was not there. Jud or Choney, the older
man was everywhere too.And I don't understand why didn't Gomer just go and put
Regis's sign and lean it against the wall.
Also, was watching Ozzie and Harriet Nelson showthe other morning and I could
not believe who was one of their neighbors! Mrs. Mendlebright. The actress that
played Mrs. Mendlebright was much younger looking, in a nice dress and it wasso
nice to see her in modern clothes and youngerlooking. Also, when Andy opened
the Coin OperatedLaundermat, when he sold it to the guy who hadhis eye on it
ever since he opened it up, he told Aunt Bee that he got back exactly what he
put intoit. Remember when Howard was going to buy theBarber Shop and rent it
out to Floyd and the bankertold Floyd that Howard was entitled to 5 percent. Why
didn't Andy get at least 5 to 10 percent overwhat he had put into the
Laundermat? He wasat least entitled to that. Always went whoa! whenAndy
gently tossed the shotgun on the couch.I am afraid of guns and was always
taught to treatthem loaded, always.
Howard: How bout you dear?Millie: Ah, it all sounds so dull...let's see...I'll
have ah, shrimp cocktail, and a porterhouse steak, au gratin potatoes, and a
celery hearts and probablyfudge layer cake, I'll see. Millie: Is there anything
wrong dear?

well it's good to be back and read all the things I've missed. I remember the

back and found over 1200 e-mails and all the WBMUTBB posts for the past month
and a half. Got a lot of reading and scrapping to do. Anyway while convelescing
My wife bought me the 50th anniversary DVD. I got to tell you I teared up
watching "Return To Mayberry". That is one awesome movie..I had kind of
forgotten the plot although I remembered it had something to do with a
monster...I've also continued to watch and re-watch all the episodes..I noticed
something in 'A Wife For Andy". That's where Barney tries to set up Andy with
every girl in town. When the girls come
through the door at Andy's they come from the left..The porch steps are on the
right..for them to enter they would have to step across the porch in front of
the door but they don't..And when Andy looks out to see if any more girls are
coming he looks to the left not back toward the steps...Wonder if anyone else
noticed this...
Didn't mean to carry on so, but its good to be back. Thanks Alan for posting
all these conversations I really do appreciate it

All the talk about Hoosier Cabinets actually reminded me of Indiana - Hoosiers.
In 2004, Mayberry In The Midwest III was held in New Castle, Indiana (Hoosiers)
and it was a very good Mayberry Cast Reunion. There were so many cast members
there that they had to use some adjoining towns to hold the autograph sessions.
I really wanted to see her and get Maggie Peterson Mancuso's autograph
(Charlene Darling) so we drove a short distance to Knightstown, Ind. where she
was in the Hoosier Gym - Home of the Hickory Huskers. For the non - basketball
fans, this is the gym where they filmed the movie "Hoosiers" and it was exactly
like in the film, which remains one of the better sports films of all time. I
did get Charlene's autograph (she was absolutely delightful) and a picture of
me taking a basketball shot which I made. It was a lay up. Not only were the
stars there, but a whole host of tribute artists were there including "Barney",
"Otis"," Goober"," Opie",

2010-12-10 Thread ROBERT PHILLIPS

During the 60's I beleive that there were still a minority of women working in
the work force and there were many many jobs that they would not allow women to
perform. I clearly remember than when I finished my four year term in the Air
Force in June 1968, I was approached a few times while I was just walking down
the sidewalk and asked if I want or need a job. There was a shortage of men for
a lot of jobs. I beleive that the womans rights move began in the 70's and
eventually employers were forced to give jobs to women that they really didn't
want to. Morals and ethics changed by the 90's a large number of people began
hollaring that they want things to again be like they were in the days of The
Andy Griffith Show. I know this as I am a portrayal to Don Knotts and I was
hounded to change things back. Maybe the word of that reached the media or
something because soon after came the last movie that Don Knotts stared in;
Pleasantville.

there is a contest and if my scooter could get the most votes I could win a new
one, mine is old and is my only transportation at this time, you'll know which
pictures are mine as mine is my squad car.

Thank You.

There was the doctor (played by "Fr. Mulcahy") who took out Opie's tonsils and
Andy was leary of the operation from an inexperienced doctor.

Barney was Dr. Pendike selling Miracle Salve. Does that count?

While we're on this train of thought, how many people are seen or mentioned in
he show with doctorates? Not the M.D.s. There are bunches of those, but the
cademic doctorates. Can anyone name them?

I am assuming the following would have had academic doctorate degrees: (I am
including psychology but not veterinarians)

Dr. Harrison Everett Breen of New York City, the visiting preacher
Neil Bentley, Attorney at Law (It takes a doctorate now - not sure about then.)
The Lady Goober dated after the computer matchup. (Wasn't she a psychologist?)
Lee Drake, another lawyer
Arthur Harrington, Ron Bailey's attorney
A number of attorneys
Frank - the friend of Peggy who was a pharmacist
Fred - Ellie's uncle
Dr. Merle Harmon, (He was a licensed PPD according to Barney)
Jack, Charlie's nephew was a candidate for a degree in Psychology...

Who else?

Brad "Neil Bentley Cunningham (Dr. Cunningham, actually )

What is going on with TV Land Penthouse Channel commercials really???
I was watching Andy last night when I saw a commercial for that channel; I
actually thought we changed the channel somehow.

The reality TV shows are bad enough at not representing what TV Land is all
about but this is a new low for TVLand.

Ken, all of the practical jokes were funny, but my favorite was when Andy put
the blanket corners under the cot legs while Ol' Barn was taking a nap.  That
one makes me laugh out loud everytime.

2010-09-26 Thread teresa sigler

dear Tags,

I just found out that Joy Ellison played Mary Alice's
best friend in the episode where she broke her
date with Opie to go out with the older young
man, Fred Simpson. She seemed more upset about what it was
going to do to Opie than Mary Alice did! All she
wanted to do was be seen with Fred Simpson!
I just can't believe that girl in that episode
is the same little girl in the Beauty Pageant, Scobbies
Foreclosure. I know these aren't the real names of the
episodes. that little girl eating the cookie with Andy
was so cute. God Bless her going on after TAGS
and having a wonderful career as a dialect coach.

Oh, I don't know if this has been mentioned or not,
but I saw a big, it's big oversight of the prop dept.
In a drug store scene with Ellie, i believe it was Andy
something, can't remember. Andy and Ellie were standing
in front of the counter where Emma Watson had tried
to sneak behind to help herself to her pills.
Anyway, the sign above the counter on the shelf
advertising the photo lab said Enlargements, but it was
Misspelled! it was spelled:

ENLARGMENTS!

I just thought wow! Someone check it when they see a
scene in the drug store. Our local tv station shows TAGS
at 10 thru 11 pm every night 7 days a week. last night was
the Christmas episode. My favorite part is when Ben gives
Bee the sewing basket and Ellie and Mrs. Scobbie a gift and
they instantly turn and start singing Noel the Angels and
making him a plate and as Andy is taking him to put him
in a jail cell, they say Ben? and he turns around and is given
a plate and a cup of eggnog. just beautiful, just beautiful!!!

Sand Mt. Mizzus Why-lee

Take him around let him meet people, have him dance
with Remona.

Ma'am, will you please stop talking about the weather!
