[WISPA] antenna question
I have a Waverider ccu that stopped accepting associations from cpe. Swapped ccu, bypassed filter, replaced cabling, everyting but the antenna. All the spec ans stay flat. My guys on the tower are pointing to the antenna, 2 yr. old til-tek sector as the failure point. Ive never had an antenna go bad. Any one else had a similar experience? RE: [WISPA] Google Wi-Fi map
BreezeACCESS VL is the PMP backhaul for the Tropos mesh nodes. My house in located on that map, but my laptop can't see a Tropos node. Then again, I cannot physically see one from house or near my house either. They are everywhere else though. I agree. FWIW, Trango's 5gig Fox units are around $150/cpe for a 30 pack. We're getting ready to roll out some 5Gig and I'm thinking pretty hard and heavy about going that route. -- Chad -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of KyWiFi LLC Sent: Wednesday, July 19, 2006 11:33 PM To: WISPA General List Subject: Re: [WISPA] Tranzeo WDS capacity, Mikrotik - problems -90 is not just bad, it's horrible. ;-) It has been my experience that a signal of -75 or better *should* allow for a reliable 11Mbps connection rate. I have seen times when the subscriber had a -65 to -60 and they would only associate at a rate of 1Mbps but after changing channels, their association rate was able to negotiate at the optimal rate of 11Mbps. We also have a subscriber with a -89 and they have been able to sustain a constant 11Mbps rate which blows my mind. They are one of our happiest subscribers and since we have not noticed a degradation in service/speed from the AP to which they are associated, we have left them connected. I will be testing a 400mw 2.4GHz CPE at their location in the near future. Right now, they have a 18dBi CPE with a 24dBi grid and they are connected to a 13.5dBi H-POL sector and 18dBi radio which is 7 miles away. They use to have a -75 I think it was but the trees around the halfway mark between the sector and them have since then grown into their link's fresnel zone. We service rural Central and Eastern Kentucky and I would say our noise floor is around -95 to -90 in most areas. We always use the largest antenna approved by the subscriber. If we can get a -75 link with a 13dBi panel, we normally go with a 19dBi panel so we can get the signal into -60's. Just try to keep your signal level in the -75 to -55 range and you *should* do well with 2.4GHz. I can't wait until the day when we can deploy 5GHz CPE for the same price as our 2.4GHz CPE. But, as time goes on, I'm sure 5GHz spectrum will someday be used the same (if not more) than 2.4GHz and we will all be looking for the next best piece of spectrum to utilize for our PtMP links. RE: [WISPA] Tranzeo WDS capacity, Mikrotik - problems
If you haven't run a test with a spectrum analyzer, there really is no way to know for sure what is out there. Harmful noise, as you probably know, can come from all sorts of devices, not just 802.x APs. Yes, -90 is bad for several reasons. 1. That link is probably suffering from high packet loss. This will not only cause problems for the customer's link, but will keep your AP busy resending dropped packets. One customer isn't going to overload an AP, but several could. 2. -90 doesn't leave much room for fade. Bad weather could, and most likely will, knock this link out in a heart beat. 3. The rate at which the client and AP talk at a -90 would be 1MB. Whenever the AP is "talking" to the client it will have to adjust its rate to match that of the client's. When another client, let's say it's connected at an 11mb rate, wants to talk the AP has to adjust its rate to 11mb, these constant adjustments can cause latency, dropped packets, and overload the CPU on the AP. This is more evident with the more clients you have. Always set your AP rate to "auto", hard set all clients to 11MB. Just make sure you don't do the install unless it will support an 11MB rate. Lastly, I would suggest that you test each and every link for packet loss sending large packets, 0% or less and you'll be good to go. I could be way off; your -90 client may be working perfectly. I just thought I would share some info that I had to learn the hard way. Someone is missing a GOLDEN opportunity here. If someone setup a site that charged a *small* fee to be listed, and then maybe a smaller fee (per use) to search, they could possibly make some money. I don't think it is worth $250 per year to do tower searches. I would probably be willing to pay $20 for a months worth of searches though. [WISPA] Rural Telcos Raise A 'Ruckus' For IPTV Gear
Rural Telcos Raise A 'Ruckus' For IPTV Gear Telecomweb: http://www.telecomweb.com/tnd/18142.html In what observers are calling a stunning win, Wi-Fi startup *Ruckus Wireless* this morning disclosed it has signed contracts with 16 mostly rural U.S. telcos that are going to use its Wi-Fi equipment to distribute their triple-play offerings around home. Ruckus had previously announced only a handful of wins at U.S. telcos - six in all - and an agreement by a major French retailer to put its hardware on the shelf for French IPTV users to buy. The young company, founded in June 2004, needed something like the momentum the 16 wins now gives it to make its technology pitch to the larger Tier One and Tier Two carriers worldwide, including cable and satellite providers. What Ruckus is selling is an implementation of Wi-Fi that's said to be far more usable for distribution of IPTV and indeed any type of broadband than standard Wi-Fi devices. The company says that it is so reliable it eliminates the need for coax, Cat 5 or any other type of wired distribution system in a house. The technology, which Ruckus calls "smart Wi-Fi," uses a directional antenna array and advanced traffic engineering mechanisms to extend the Wi-Fi range and coverage by dynamically steering packets around interference and automatically prioritizing traffic. The "system," as Ruckus describes it, selects the best path through the air at any given time for a specific type of multimedia content. It directs Wi-Fi signals over that path to a given receiver instead of broadcasting it in all directions. If the chosen path experiences interference, the Ruckus system automatically steers the traffic over another path in real time to maintain between 15 Mb/s and 20 Mb/s of consistent bandwidth to every location in the home with "virtually no interruption in Wi-Fi transmissions," Ruckus says. Ruckus claims an average user can install its gear for multiple home televisions in less than an hour, with no need for help - thus eliminating the dreaded and expensive "truck roll" that accompanies most new cable-TV and many IPTV installations. "Until now, Wi-Fi hasn't been up to the task. Consumers want to use Wi-Fi for all their multimedia, if they can get it, and now they can," Ruckus said in a prepared quote that it attributed to Steve Bartlett, general manager of *Daviess-Martin Telephone* in Montgomery, Ind. The big reason Ruckus can't simply sell off-the-shelf at retailers is that cablecos, satellite companies and even telcos aren't using set-top boxes that are compatible with Wi- Fi. They've got to provide such boxes - and few do. Thus, partnership with the operators is key to Ruckus' long-term success, and nailing down 16 in one pop is its best sales pitch to date. The new Ruckus customers include: *ETEX Telephone Cooperative* (Texas); *Daviess-Martin Rural Telephone Corporation* (Ind.); *LaValle Telephone* (Wisc.); *Richland Grant Telephone Cooperative* (Ind.); *Canby Telcom* (Ore.); *Hutchinson Telephone Company* (Minn.); *Glandorf Telephone Company* (Ohio); *Green Hills Telephone Company* (Mo.); *Ligonier Telephone Company* (Ind.); *Matanuska Telephone Association* (Alaska); *Union Telephone Company* (Wisc.); *Viola Home Telephone Company* (Ill.); *McDonough Telephone Cooperative* (Ill.); *New Windsor Telephone* (Ill.); *Nex-Tech, Inc*. (Kansas); and *Wabash Mutual Telephone* (Ohio). -- WISPA Wireless List: wireless@wispa.org Subscribe/Unsubscribe: http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless Archives: http://lists.wispa.org/pipermail/wireless/
