Entirely possible. Bandwidth across it doubtful.

Re: [WISPA] Fiber On Air (gigabit wireless)

2011-10-26 Thread Dorn Hetzel
Well, sure, it's possible, as long as you are able to use levels of laser
power that would be really unfriendly to anyone unlucky enough to step in
front of it. You can bounce laser signals off the reflector left on the
moon, so I don't think 35 miles would be that much of a challenge :) Now,
could a civilian deploy something with this range at a reasonable bandwidth
in a location where faces might conceivable intercept the beam? I'm
guessing not so much...

I always imagined the links to be super difficult, but I'm interested

Where will the link be located? 80GHz is unlicensed in some parts of the
world. In the US, BridgeWave includes the 80GHz license with the radio, so
that shouldn't affect the purchasing decision.

Taking my vendor hat off, I would avoid FSO if you can. Very susceptible to
changes in the environment, low MTBF, twist/sway is a major concern.

Re: [WISPA] Fiber On Air (gigabit wireless)

2011-10-26 Thread Daniel White
The limit is based on O2 absorption. It is hard limit, not hardware or
software based but atmospheric attenuation based.

2.5km is usually a slam dunk for 80GHz.

It's not clear if that limit is hard (timing-based) or soft (loss-based).
If you're in a relatively dry area, and it's a soft limit, you might get a
bit of extra range. But I suspect that only would apply in FE mode, not GE
mode, which needs more power.

I'd also check Dragonwave, whose brochures are behind a registration/mail
wall. But reliable GE for that distance on microwave is a stretch.

The fSONA product is free space optical, not microwave. It might do the job
but FSO requires a genuine, true, real line-of-sight path.
