It might be, only if it were phonetically written. When I read Mannival
out loud I hear "Manuel" which is a common Portuguese name or surname.

Hey, you will have to check to Porto Formoso records for that time period,
all religious stuff in Sao Braz happened in Porto Formoso. I have family in
both places. I know there is 1 or 2 Mello families in the records. Contact

this is a long shot but I am wondering if the name Mannival is a Portuguese
surname. We cannot track the parents of our first ancestor from Portugal to
Nova Scotia but over the years I have come across this name and a second name.
thanks

Yes ma’am, you are correct. I descend from Mary Agnes Silva who married
William Perry aka Guilherme Francisco Pereira.
I am a participant in the Azore DNA Project.

John,
If you type Dyce into the search of your gmail, you should be able to find

Thanks Mara. I have the English version of the Herald News obituary. That's
where I got all the info in my post. Maybe the Manuel and Maria are the same.
As to finding the correct church that Ms. Mello suggests there really isn't
anyone left to query.

Just some quick thoughts. The name Joseph Silva Dyce – I believe Dyce is a
phonetic spelling of Dias so in Portuguese records it would be Jose da Silva
Dias. Where did this Joseph Nichols come from? Did Jose da Silva Dias die and
Maria Isabel remarry? You kind of indicate this but you have no
You need to do U.S. research to narrow down the freguesia (or council) on
Sao Miguel. They have almost 70 churches. Looking for a Jose is like
looking for a needle in a haystack. I don't know why you are saying Jose
Mello went by Jose Achadinha. That's a place on Sao Miguel, although I have

Gonçalo,
You'd just have to compile a list of those bound from the port of Ponta
Delgada to Bermuda in the 1920s from the Passaportes here:

They have some missing years in the 1920s. :( Cheri

I have family by the same name from Rabo de Peixe who went to Bermuda
around the same time and then retuned to Sāo Miguel in the 1950's. It was
my grandmother's brother and his family.

New to this sight. It's fantastic.
Great grandfather Jose Mello aka Jose Jose Chadinha born about 1867 married
Helena Ricarda and immigrated to US around turn o 19th to 20th century. His
parents were Manuel Mello and Maria Carlotta. Anyone familiar with names? I'm
flying blind! Thanks.

Are there lists of people traveling from S. Miguel to Bermuda in the 1920's?

John M,
I cannot duplicate any of the searches that you have listed.
Are you a descendant of the child, Mary Agnes Silva, born 1868, or a
descendant of Joseph Silva, born 1869?
Did you DNA test yet? The Azores project is now large enough to give you at
least an island group if not the island.

There are quite a few Martins Gouveia in Rabo de Peixe. To link up with any
specific line you need more specific information.
