You can put the cdrw drive as the master on the
secondary channel, and (if you want) put the old cd
rom drive as the slave. However unless you want to
copy cd's there is really no reason to even keep your
old cd rom drive, just use the cdrw as your cd rom
drive, most of them are as fast enough in

REMOVE ide cdrom support, because the scsi emulation
will replace the ide cdrom driver. This is needed
because CDRECORD only uses scsi protocol. You will
then access the cdrom as /dev/scd0. In my computer I

instead of /dev/ttyS1.

I finally got pon to start pppd and chat to connect to the internet via
modem. The first time I typed pon it dialed out, but this was after
playing with the commands manually from the command line. The next time I
booted the system and tried it again nothing happened. I typed ps and saw

>From memory I think that ttyS0 (com1) and ttyS3 (com 4) share the same
interrupt. That could be your problem. Go into your bios setup and insure
that these comm ports do NOT share interrupts. Usually interrupt 5 or 7
can be used for the third comm port.

I may have the same tape drive as you. I find an IBM (made my archive
corp) DDS2 scsi tape drive at a ham radio flea market for $10. It works
fine thou it is slower than a QIC drive (but holds lots more). I am using
tar. To put more than one backup on a tape use the /dev/nst0 device (no
rewind

ifconfig will show a connection to ppp0 when the connection is
established. You could write a script that runs ifconfig every second or
so using grep to look for 'ppp0' and report when the link is up, then stop
itself.
