I don't think that this setting controls the BIOS beeps (e.g. boot-up
beeps). Have you tried pressing Fn/F4 a few times until you can hear a
beep (it cycles through off-soft-medium-loud)?

The mail2news portion of newsgate works perfectly for me. Unfortunately
that is not the case for news2mail. I had a feeling that my posts to
debian.user (my local store of debian-user) weren't going out to the list. So
I tried running news2mail (as root) and fed it a message like this:

I made for my own use a short
while ago. Since it's compiled against libc5 I've not wanted to UL it.
FWIW I've got mrtg "cooperating" with diald; mrtg watches /dev/sl0 when
the link is down & /dev/ppp0 when the link is up.
