I'm running Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat (10.10) installed on a USB pendrive.
I experience this problem consistently, that is, I cannot get Ubuntu to
prompt for entering a password after resuming a locked screen in any
way.
By default the installation comes with a default user account 'ubuntu'

Since the original reporter doesn't have this issue anymore, I am
closing this bug.
If anyone else is having similar issues, please try Ubuntu 10.04 and
file a new bug if there's still an issue.
Thanks.

However I have to add that for me it is only a restart, switch on issue,
it always asks for a password when returning from sleep.

It seems I have solved my case. As I am new to Ubuntu I do not know if
this is the case in previous generations but under System -
Administration there is a Login screen setup utility where I had to
remove login automatically selection. Silly, this sort of thing I
believe should be under one menu
I too wanted to add that this behavior has become the default for me. I
couldn't get my laptop to ask for password when it wakes up any more!

I'd like to add that I have had this issue with gnome on karmic UNR
32bit and I am having it with karmic kubuntu 64bit. So perhaps this has
nothing to do with gnome-screensaver but something at a lower level? As
previous posters, I've been unable to figure out a pattern, this happens
sometimes. I
I was able to solve my problem by upgrading to 9.10 Karmic Koala. It
fixed a lot more problems I was experiencing and I highly recommend you
upgrade, Jeenu V.

I'm already on Karmic I'm afraid (upgraded from Jaunty).

I've faced this on and off. I don't know what triggers this behavior,
but once it started I think it stays until the system is rebooted (not
sure if rebooting solves this though). One more thing I've noticed
happening with this is that, the Lock screen from menu doesn't work -

Ok, I'm back, and it just happened again. Just thought I'd let you guys
know. I don't have a screen saver on, just using the Power Management
function for the monitor (6 minutes) and suspend (16 minutes).

Yeah, it still didn't work.
I went ahead and did a fresh install (long story) and so far, so good.
I'll report back.

I'll try out your suggestions Marc. It hasn't happen recently. I'm
wondering if it had something to do with GnomeDo's Files and Folders
plug-in, which was sometimes causing suspend to fail. I fixed that
problem and it hasn't happened since, but we'll see. I'll report back if
there's any updates.
OK nevermind, it happened again. Gnome-Screensaver was running after the
computer was awoken from suspend. Next, I'll try setting my screen saver
to blank. Will report back if it happens again.

It's not worth re-installing it.
When you return from suspend and the screen isn't locked, is the
gnome-screensaver process still running?
Does this happen if you set your screensaver to blank screen?

Anyone? Is un-installing Gnome-Screensaver safe or it like uninstalling
