It appears to be caused by the "Nothing to Say" gnome extension. I
uninstalled this, and can now use the wayland session again.

Thanks for the feedback, but I don't believe I am using fractional
scaling. My scaling is set to 100%, but I have changed the font scaling
to 1.25.
If I set font scaling to 1.0, then I see the same tearing.

kernel 4.15.0-70-generic. I have not been able to find a way to
consistently reproduce it. It is a random complete system freeze. The
mouse does not respond, caps lock and numlock do not change light on
keyboard, ctrl alt f2/f3/
I've now been using an Xorg session rather than Wayland and haven't seen
the repeated keys issue. I do get some very nasty screen tearing when
scrolling (e.g. websites) on Xorg however, so ideally I'd like to
continue using Wayland.

PSA: This may be related to a broken headphone jack that is supposed to
detect whether headphones are plugged in and change output accordingly.
Work around in ubuntu right now is to run alsamixer from terminal,
select correct soundcard, then disable auto-mute, then unmute and turn

not supported by the manufacturers backlight driver, known as nvidiabl
