I just want to report that I had the same problem, and it was solved by
following the above instructions. Basicaly it's a "me too" message.

You want to install ssmtp
# emerge net-mail/ssmtp
Then edit /etc/ssmtp/ssmtp.conf to reflect your needs.

le can't/won't/don't know how to (pick any/all) trim down their replies
2) When you reply to a digest, without trimming down the reply it becomes
_extreamly_ messy
3) Dubble (2) if the mail client send it out as html
Basicly, it think it's to keep the list "cleaner"
