[gentoo-user] large .avi video files, re-encode ?

Hi all, I have a bunch of .avi video files that I use in a openoffice presentation, they are nice and clear but really large files (1 - 2 GB each !). I know nothing of video files, is it possible for me to re-encode them to a more efficient format without loosing quality ? Any suggestions ? D

I'm not sure if this helps, but I believe all i have to do to get to fluxbox (in fact i'm sure of it) is to select fluxbox from the menu in gdm. If you use xdm, .xsession would be the right file (you can select that in gdm as "custom"). I dont know for kde. I always forget about fancy point-&-cl
