Yes, the first three horns of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra do
play on Geyer horns and Conn11Ds. That's one of the reasons why I'm so
interested :-)

It's my understanding that three members of the Boston Pops are now playing
the 11D as is J.D. Shaw of the Boston Brass.

In the current HORN CALL (October 2002) on page 25 there is a photo of
Janine Gaboury-Sly playing at the NHW 2002.
The mpc rim appears to be a very unusual shape, but perhaps the photo is
distorted.
Do you know if she uses an unusual mpc, and maybe some information about its
purpose and function?

Lucy Kay Betts, newest member of the Kendall and Anna Betts family,
arrived at 12:16 A.M. Sunday morning, December 1st, weighing in at a healthy
8 pounds 1oz. She's 30 3/4 inches long and doing great.

I also looked at the latest Baker's. There's an entry, but it's

I sit next to a "grunter". So much that the grunts are forte, even if the afterbeats
are pianissimo. Just another benefit of the Community Band.

Then you turn into a "grunter." Horror of all horrors!
You could think of afterbeats as pickups to the next beat instead. I
used to practice with a metronome until I could play then after the
beat. If you have trouble playing afterbeats it might be because you
don't feel or hear the beat--the
Another device that helps to play off-beats in a timely way is to click
the back of your throat on the on-beats. That's a good substitute for
foot-tapping, especially for very fast tempi or when others in the
orchestra are playing their on-beats or off-beats inaccurately.

Well, Calberg, they may be easier to use, but you

Thanks for all the comments and encouragement, on and off line, regarding my

Nice to see a dose of sanity
It works best with horns that play in tune without the aid of your
hand in the bell. The sound reproduction is fairly faithful but dynamic
discernment is not the same as playing without the Silent Brass; softer
dynamics tend to be amplified so that the difference between pp and ff
is not as great

I'm looking for opinions/observations on the Yamaha Silent Brass Practice System. I
haven't had a chance to try this system, but I would appreciate any thoughts from
hornplayers who are familiar with it. I'm especially curious how accurately it
reflects tone color, etc. Does this
