I have the same problem with the number pad I purchased for use with
this ThinkPad using XP Pro using Jaws versions 5 through 7. I think it
may be something to do with the codes the number

what I think happened with the num pad is that when you plug it in, your
computer conflicts with the function key ability to create a num pad on the
laptop's keyboard.
This, I believe, is a common thing with all laptops, except the ones that have
a full sized keyboard.

making sure the numlock was off, was the first thing I tried. However, your suggestion
to reboot with the numpad plugged in, seem to do the trick. I am now able to use the
cursor keys and the Jaws key okay no

Hit insert+J for the jaws window. Then open up the basics sub menu. Once
in there tab over until you here use keyboard lay out and arrow up or down
until you hear desktop. Hit enter because you're done. HTH
