I bought one to use specifically as a plastic welder. Temp control adds
just the right extra control to stitch various thickness plastics back
together. Temp control and proper fill rod material with a bit of practice
and I've now added plastic welding to my "Repair Skills CV".

That one isn't bad, but you can get, for a few more dollars, one with a digital
readout. Easier to control since you can set it properly, and typically they
all use Weller type screw-on tips.

What type is the old Weller? If it's the pistol grip type with the
twp legged tip, try loosening then tightening the nuts holding the tip a
couple of times, then see if that doesn't cure it.
