I had the pleasure of meeting some birding legends in the Sax/Zim Bog today.
I learned new words, gained insight into subspecies, and had an all round

I was talking today to Jeff Frey, owner of CPL (Custom Photo Lab) in Duluth.
Last night (Monday night) after dark, he found a Boreal Owl on a snowbank in
the alley behind CPL. It was clutching a small bird carcass. He was able to
approach within a few feet before it fluttered off with its prize.
FYI:
I created a google map to find the Hawk-owl in Mankato.

In the search maps box, type:

Hey birders,
Trent Robbins, a friend from church and non-birder (so far), dropped me an
email this morning about what he thought was a Northern Hawk-Owl sitting in his

his identification--he had viewed it with 10x bino
As of 2:30 PM the owl was sitting in a deciduous tree (about 3/4 of the

add to my directions posted earlier, after exiting off Hwy. 14 on Lor
Ray Dr., you must go south on Lor Ray before coming to Commerce Dr.

Chad Heins just called to report a Northern Hawk Owl in North Mankato,
Nicollet County. He was called about the bird's presence this morning,
and around noon or so he went to verify its presence.
To get to the area, from Hwy. 169 go west on Hwy. 14 in North Mankato.

At 11:00 today there was a flock of about 8 white-winged crossbills
feeding on the black spruces just west of 34th Ave S. along Minnehaha
Creek (along the tennis courts). They were still there feeding when I
left at 11:15.

Al,
Thank you for your perspective on this. As I reflect on the incident, with
input from you, Sparky and others I find myself still not in one to condone
baiting, but realizing perhaps a more reasoned approach to the situation would
have been more productive. I think Al reminds us we've all do
Allow me to share a bit of a different perspective on this issue.

As winter lingers and we scramble about looking for the few species we can
find, the terms ethics and correct identification seem to come up to fill
our spare time. I've enjoyed reading the articles (not reports) by Mike,
David, Sparky and Shawn which all seem valid. It causes me to reflect on my

After posting my request for advice on finding Boreal Owls, I received a few
requests to post any useful information I received. I only received a handful
of replies, but there was some consistency (and one attached photo of a
