Same problem here with the most recent mainline kernel 3.1.4 for oneiric
ocelot (11.10). While I do have a USB card reader attached,
disconnecting it does *not* influence the time gap at boot time.

The suggested symbolic link did not work for me under onieric x86_64.

I've seen that as I have wrote in the bug description.
But I am not so a fan from building it from source when it must not be.
So, there are packages on ubuntu. We are on the next upcoming version
12.04. Why not bring up the newest packages to the repositories?

I got the source package for xorg-server and removed the patch
219_fedora-pointer-barriers.diff
and built it and installed the xserver-common and xserver-xorg-c
I'll have a look into the update.

Building it from source is as easy as downloading the latest source
tarball (2.1.7 is about to be released) and performing "sudo python
setup.py install" in the extracted source directory. Since 11.10 is a
point release, we will have to wait for the next 12.04 for getting this
package updated.
