on and off during feisty over the last month my power button has been
shutting the laptop (acer 1644) directly without even asking me. some
updates fix it and then it happens again. right now powerbutton causes
direct shutdown - dont want to do it now but ill send output when can...

i have modified both the groot line and the 2 kopt lines a couple of
times now.
this last kernel update i have become certain - the changes to both of
these values in menu.lst are edited away by the script that updates
grub.
i am sure those two lines were correct because this has happened a few

perhaps this error message is helpful. of course im certain of the UUID - i got
it from /dev/disks/by-uuid and it seems to work in fstab every time

sorry for the repeated comments but now im sure the problem lies with
findfs
when my fstab uses /dev/hda2 update-grub works correctly. but when my
fstab uses the UUID which is correct update-grub fails and gives the
above error message. i hope this will allow somebody to solve it...

its very strange that we should experience differences in this
behaviour. my install is default...
1, i use IMAP and click on an email in Thunderbird (standard feisty i.e.
1.5x) with multiple attachments.
2, a gnome file dialog opens with buttons cancel and open...it opens
with the last directory
I'm sorry - I am being confusing...
I didn't check the bug properly before replying...
But I just clicked save on a single attachment in Evolution (IMAP
offline) and the file-dialog which came up contained no filename in the
textbox and the save-button did not respond unless i typed a name in...
i right-click on the attachment and then choose save as or save all (i
had different bugs for these)...
but im sorry to say that i'm now using a backport of TB2 so i can't do
any more testing...
good news is it looks better for TB2. if i find bugs i'll report them
when TB2 becomes officially back

this was a while back so i dont have the details. it def. wasnt an ntfs
partition though. it had been a luks partition before and i think that
was related...maybe it will happen again and we'll get more
information...or hopefully it wont!

packages by downloading them manually from the web ubuntu dapper package

firestarter automatically edits /etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf when dhcp is
enabled. i spent 3 hours trying to figure out why dhcpd still would
start trying loads of different configs.
problem is - it turned out - that the conf file used by dhcpd is

i discovered while using firestarter that i did not have a dhcp
server. obviously this should have been a dependency to firestarter
since one of firestarters main functions depends on it...
instead i did an apt-get on dhcp which seemed the right thing...

could the problem be that there are two UUIDs for swap...one refers to
the partition and the other refers to the swap-filesystem...
when i do mkswap it returns a new UUID for swap and no label...but when
i do 'ls -la /dev/disks/by-uuid afterwards the UUID which refers to
/dev/hda4 has not changed.
i would just like to add that on my acer 1644 i only have one battery
which is for some reason listed as BAT1 under /proc/acpi/battery...
i assume that this is the reason why im suffering from similar problems
with gpm...when i unplug AC it always tells me 1 hour remaining (with 3
%) and then does

i dont know what happens really...
the system becomes completely unresponsive...i tried doing ctrl+alt+f1
and finally got a tty...it seems that gdm or X finally restarted...
other times i restarted gdm manually...
dmesg gives this:

andreas - why make it so complicated. priority -1 is not a problem
if swapon -s reports a priority of -1 that means it is reporting an
ACTIVE swap partition...
for everybody else - dont mess with more than you have (unless you
really know what youre doing of course)...just follow the instructi

doesnt it seem strange to have to modify a launcher in order for an
application to behave in the way the user expects?
