I have finally resolved this issue. The problem was not something in
grub2. Rather there was an issue with the BIOS. I managed to get Ubuntu
Mate 14.04 to boot - until I did did a kernel update. The PC would no
longer boot. Just on a hunch I popped out and replaced the button
battery and let the
By way of additional testing I did a clean install of Lubuntu 14.04. It
would not boot after the install. I then booted the PC from the Debian
Wheezy live DVD. I then installed grub2 from Debian to the Lubuntu hard
drive. It will now boot Lubuntu.

I can add some good news on this bug! I just booted my netbook from a
11.04 Live CD (well on a flash drive actually). The resolution is 1024 x
600 and it is running the Unity interface. When I call up gnome-disk-
utility it is too big to fit on the screen both vertically and
horizontally. HOWEVER,
I am using 10.04 LTS specifically so as not to have to chase upgrades
every 6 months. I do not plan to upgrade this machine until perhaps
12.04 LTS is released so I am afraid I cannot confirm if the issue
exists in Natty. It does still occur on 10.04 on occasion even with the
latest patches install

determined the reason I could not connect to the remote server is that I

An image of Ubuntu-Server 10.04.1 32 bit was download and burned to a
CD. The CD was inserted in the DVD-R/RW drive in a Dell Poweredge 400SC
server. Installation began and proceeded to a point just AFTER 74% of
"Install the base system".
On the 10.10 64 bit VM I removed the remnants under /etc/init.d/nfs*. I
then rebooted it and ran shares-admin. This time when I clicked
"Install services" I was prompted for my password.
On a newly installed 10.10 32 bit physical machine with all current
updates I was prompted as expected.
