No, it isn't normal. Did anything like this happen before you installed
Ubuntu? Also, when it is sitting there, can you press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to
switch to a terminal? If you feel confident enough to, could you boot
without quiet or splash on and see what happens then? Thanks in advance.

I tried the instructions you stated, before I started messing with the
bios; However, the problem still was there. If, I could find out the
reason(s) for all of the recent Bios Upgrades for this model of
computer. That may shed some light on the shut down problem. I have an
idea it is with the hibe

I have finally found out the problem. This was a Dell Bios problem. Dell
upgraded the bios version originally 1.3.0, 1.7.0, 1.8.0 and than 1.9.0.
the bios are available from dell inspiron 531 download sight. the
original bios 1.3.0 is a Microsoft version that is reinstallable by
running from vista
