Commenting out udev rule doesn't work, but it sure fixed the
wlan0_rename problem, and the little hang on bootup.

This bug seems to be being investigated by the udev people at bug
208103. I'm not quite sure what to do about whether to mark one or the
other as duplicates: this bug has several duplicates (not all of which
actually seem to be about /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules at

I can confirm this bug, however, following the suggestion to modify the
udev rules resulted in a DIFFERENT 3rd networking device.
On my Vaio VGN C240E (intel 3945 wireless), iwconfig displays the following;

lono wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wifi0

Here's another me too.
Gutsy - Hardy on Compaq nc6320 broke wireless.
Commenting out the udev rule fixes the problem.

I have this problem too with intel 3495after upgrade from gutsy: wireless
adapter treated as wired, and an extra wired interface added. After deleting
all lines from /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and rebooting, the
file was re-created and now there are only two interfaces, eth0 for
