continuous scrolling rather than page-turning to avoid such problems but most
of my Kindle books were not apparently typeset to allow this.

Yes, if I manually lock the screen during Speech Screen playback, on a Kindle
title, speech will stop at the end of the current page.
However, when reading text from the web or other various text, locking the
screen does not cause playback to stop.
