headphone outlet of a audio tape recorder into the mike input of my IMac. I
have been to Dick Smith and Tandy and had the blank stares. The mike plug
profile seems to be a bit special.

I've recently had a similar experience looking for an odd plug adapter.
While I've found another solution, several shops suggested a place called
Alltron (I think) in Roe St, North Perth (next to the Metropolis nightclub,
I'm told.)
