(313) Off topic.(herbert)
sorry for the off topic but if you can check Herbert out live, it's quite an interesting performance. he played in Sydney, Australia, last year.at the mad racket party he had a DAT tape backing of this almost industrial-tech-house/techno style minimal beats and sounds, in that funky herbert way, and then over the top he used a lot of real time sampling. using a small mackie mixer, an effects box, and a few sample/delay guitar pedals, and a microphone he was creating layers of loops of real time created samples, and somehow keeping it all in sync! he was also manually triggering some of these noises from a small keyboard, changing the pitch of these real time samples right up and down. He was holding things up to the microphone, creating samples/sounds using all sorts of stuff, water bottles, kettles with boiling water, potato chip packets, crumpled paper, pots and pans, plastic tubes, bits of metal... hitting them, bashing them, rubbing them, crushing them. he was also sampling himself munching on chips, gargling water, spitting it out, and making all sorts of sounds into the microphone, it was very entertaining to watch too! it wasn't long into his set and the stage was a mess, it looked like he'd raided a kitchen and put everything on the stage around his music gear... at one point having all this electrical equipment and water, kettles etc all didn't get along... shorted stuff out, but he was back in action in no time... it was awesome! quite a good sound, and the crowd (packed audience) were really up for it. highly recommended. thanxs to damc for the review Zootie

(313) Express 12s
Hi, Can you provide (or point me at) an Express (KMS offshoot) discography? In fact, I want the release dates of these 12s: Ms. V (The Bold One) Out Of Your Mind, Express EXP008, exec. prod. Clifton Thomas, prod. Art Forest, dist. Music Master Inc. 7324 W.7 Mile Rd. Detroit MI 48221 (313) 864 2054 Sugar-N-Spice Love Me Right, EXP018, prod. Clifton Thomas, written prod. Art Forest for Myshmie Production, dist. Music Master Inc. (as above) I remember buying these from Eric Austin at Buy-Rite Records on W.7 Mile Road, during a visit to Detroit in either '90 or '91. I can find very little info. on-line about Express. TIA, Mark Fuller ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) HotBot - Search smarter. http://www.hotbot.com
Re: (313) Express 12s
Is he the man behind the strange D-Bass label that put out five DJ Assault records but forgot to print their (Assault+Dé) names on the labels? BTW, Express Records is also the name of Jam Pony Express' record label and their records are even rarer than the Detroit label's. .ra$ -- Fra: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Til: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Emne: Re: (313) Express 12s Dato: 24. januar 2000 17:00 EXPRESS RECORDS was NOT a KMS offshoot. It was a completely seperate label owned by Cliff Thomas, who also owns Buy Rite Music (record store). Cliff put out records by or assisted in some way, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Blake Baxter, Kenny Dixon Jr (aka MOODYMAN), Dj Assault, TrackMaster Lou Robinson, Mark Kinchen, yours truely as well as many others. Many of us would not have a career in music if not for Cliff Thomas. He wasn't the greatest cat in the world at times, but I still got love for him. I don't know of any official discography on line for Express Records. The best thing to do if you really want to know is to call the store and speak with Cliff directly. I'm sure he'll be glad to share his story with you. peace repsect, TP In a message dated 1/24/2000 8:38:02 AM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Hi, Can you provide (or point me at) an Express (KMS offshoot) discography? (313) Theorem
For those of you who live in the Detroit area does Theorem play out regularly? The reason is I'm in Buffalo and I'm thinking of taking a trip to Detroit. If not, could someone recommend a weekly/event of deep techno that I should check out. Thanks. Mike
FW: (313) Essential Juan Atkins
On a trip to London a few weeks ago I picked up a Cybotron CD called Interface: The Roots of Techno. Don't have it in front of me so don't have the label - something obscure and Eurpean, I think. Tracklisting as follows: Clear Eden Enter Techno City Cosmic Cars Alleys of Your Mind Megiddo R-9 Cosmic Raindance El Salvador Cosmic Cars (House Mix) Vision Eden (12 Instrumental) Having to come up w/ that track list from my office reminded me to pass on the existence of a cool resource, for CD-buyers at least, at www.cddb.com. It's a database of track listings for CDs, entirely user-entered so if you go to find something and it's not there you can add it to the DB yourself. Really helps when you want to look up the trackslisting of something to see whether you already have a track but your CD collection is inaccessible. Also really nice to find out about CDs you haven't heard of by artists you're interested in. --Brian --- Brian Dillard [EMAIL PROTECTED] Armchair DJ http://armchair-dj.com techno without turntables. modern pop. -Original Message- From: SqrRt [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, January 24, 2000 1:17 PM To: 313 Mailing List Subject: RE: (313) Essential Juan Atkins This reminds me, there are Cybotron tracks that are not on this CD, right? Re: (313) Small Fish, GO there
Does Small Fish Records sell online? And, does anyone know their url if they do in fact sell online? thanks, Jordan M. Zawideh. For all those who haven't been to Small Fish Records, 372 Old Street, London, EC1V 9LT, you really should! It has a lot of the old Fat Cat crew plus others, the stock mainly comes from their personal collection along with stuff that friends have given to them. I was in there on Thursday, it was like heaven. I was surrounded by Hard to Find records, like you wouldn't beleive! They had - Trax, Slater's PAS, Sneaky trax, DJAX, Relief, Acacia, Metroplex, UR, Axis, PM, Dance Mania, M-Plant, Drama, other old chicago and Detroit gems and loads more. They sell new releases and available records but it was the H-T-F records that I was interested, you know, the records you've heard about or always wanted to hear, well shit half of them where hear! I purchased; M.C.M 'Mind Control' on Rhythm Beat (yeah it does have that track) and in the bargain bin; Man Train (Marco Carola) 'First Planet' on Design Music The Shadow (Trackmaster Lou) 'The Lurking Shadow EP' on Making Madd Paul Johnson Relief 759 'No Big Thang' :) The Movement 'Feelings of This' on Trance Fusion K Hand 'Everybody' on Acacia Thanks to everyone at Small Fish, I know I pissed them off, i must have listened to a hundred records Check them out, Laters, WorkZ talk21 your FREE portable and private address on the net at http://www.talk21.com __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

(313) early days of european techno
Does anyone know a good source of information about the early years of European techno labels such as Basic Channel, Tresor, RS and Warp? Simon Reynold's Generation Ecstasy and Dan Sicko never really went too indepth on these camps of artists. I recently tried going to the web sites and was let down by the unsuccessful attempts of these labels to document their past. Tresor's site had some very interesting biographies of the label and some artists. RS's was terribly incomplete. This preliminary research has me hungry to learn more. Perhaps there is an on-line database somewhere just filled with old magazine articles or interviews. Though many have done a wonderful job documenting the history of Detroit and the artists, I'd really like to learn about our European peers. Any info is appreciated, Jason Birchmeier

(313) Hawtin at Twilo
Did anyone else catch Mr. Hawtin at Twilo this Friday? I thought he tore it up! He blew my mind at Integral in Pittsburgh last August but was a bit dissapointing at the Engage party in DC. I was a bit apprehensive about seeing him in such a clubby type of venue, I have always seen him in more of a rave type environment but it totally worked. The crowd was a mix of clubsters and ravers but everyone seemed really into the music. At one point there was some technical difficulties, but he consistently delivered the goods. The last half hour or so he was tweaking that 909 like crazy. Lara __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
