Well, I don't dj, but having listened to Bone at DEMF recently, I remember
how much the floor (and my mood) blew up when he dropped Mory Kante's "Yeke
Yeke" and Laurent Garnier's "Man with the Red Face". Stunning.

I'm sure someone on the list will trot out "Spastic" again as a perennial
floor filler. And I imagine there are places where "Jaguar" is still a peak
time favorite.

money in the bank tracks

2001-02-10 Thread Kent williams
At the very last minute we found out that they wanted us to DJ
at Gabe's our local bar. Since we didn't have time to line any
of the local heros up, I got to spin for nearly 2 hrs.

I've noticed that certain tracks always get a strong positive response;
in particular "the Stalker" by Detroit Grand Pubahs, and the first track
on XTrack/Todd Sine's "Inode" EP. The week before I saw an empty dance
floor fill up within a minute DJ Sneak's remix of "The Chase" by
Giorgio Moroder was dropped.

Anyone else want to share their 'money in the bank' tracks?

And more to the point when are Detroit Grand Pubah's dropping more tracks?
Paris' wacky persona is always a plus, but everything about DGPB tracks
is killer -- the beats, the sounds, the builds ...

Re: [313] tokyo

2001-02-10 Thread nancy mitchell
hey !

I should be living there by then, but it all depends
how long it takes for my working visa to process!
Sometimes it takes up to 3 months, but its in the
works now.

I have been involved in the Tokyo techno scene for
some years (that is also part of why I am moving
there, I will be working in the techno scene)so I will
put some info together for you, and if I am there when
you are, maybe I can show you around one day! Where
will you stay?

The techno scene there is still very fresh. in 97 I
was at a party at liquid room with jeff & takkyu
ishino. i could not beleive it, it felt like some
early detroit parties, no one was on drugs. it was
purely aout the music and everyone i spoke too knew
detroit techno inside & out. They were screaming and
dancing until 7am or longer can't remember. Of course
the scene has progressed and grown since then. Check
out SUBVOICE record label, and the artist
shufflemaster he is one of my faves. I think he also
owns TEchnique record store in shibuya where you
should go to.

Anyway, it is not so easy getting around sometimes as
there are no street signs, you usually find something
by knowing what it is next to.

nihongo wakaru? sukoshi dake?

oh. do you know the little event magazine FLYER?
There is a FLYER Tokyo, so that will also help you to
find events , record stores etc...

Yep, " Who´s gonna bend" on i220 is also really good. On kinda darker tip

Finland. They seem to suffer from a reversible schizophreny. That´s not the

I was bitten by the electro bug a while back as well. I tend to go for
the simpler, colder and sometimes harder material, concentrating mainly on
artists and labels of British origin - with some US and Middle-European
things thrown in for good measure.
My absolute favourites are the three releases on Scopex (Simulant's
``Simm City'' and ``Out Of Ether'' and Pollon's ``Electratech''), all
SCSI releases (and Carl Finlow's material in general as Il-Ek-Tro, Voice
Stealer etc.), Phoenecia (``Randa Roomet'' on Warp, several releases on
Schematic like ``Odd Jobs''), N)E(M's 12"s and LP and other releases on
Elektrolux, Surface Effect (label), Gassoline (Wee DJ's label),
Endorphin's ``Dedication'' on Eat This, NSC (label)... oh, and of course
Speedy J's ``IEEE Mitten Menu'' and a release with only the catalog code
CLAR001. Smashing.
A few of the more recent releases that have had me clinging onto my
chair have been Mass Transit's first release with tracks by Voice Stealer,
Decal, Airlocktronics and Silicon, ``Assorted Pieces'' on Suction
(SUCTION007) and Da Halz's ``Konform EP'' on Science City (SCI018).

  Cheers,

re: Electro

2001-02-10 Thread Danny Wolfers
Talking about electro,

I just received a pack of freshly pressed 12"s from Plastic
Sleeves-"Message from Machines" from the US.
Its on downlow records. Its got real deep Detroit electro tracks on it,
with cool Model 500esque vocals and lots of
sleazy lo-fi drexciyette stuff. Real American electro with a touch of
down south stylo.

And if you like Miami bass electro-stuff just wait one week for the
first The Hague Bass record from the Getit boys
(supposedly people from Novamen) on Bunker records!

oh yeah, on of my personal favourite electro records from US/Detroit
area must be Nate Kraffts' Man Machine EP
on Infra. So deep! Does this label/producer still release stuff?

Re: [313] Electro

2001-02-10 Thread Jonny McIntosh
I second that. It's a 4 pack (I think) on Rephlex (at least in the UK) and
there's some real gems on it: on the first slice, "Evolve" I think it's
called, phewee! - watch the damage you can cause with that on a good system.
Check out:

Am I the only one who doesn't see the point of reading a 2-line response
and then wading through copies of previous posts totalling up to 200 lines
that have been copied and recopied to the list four or five times before?

This clutter is unfortunately simple to generate since the defaults in
many email programs are to "quote original message," but it really
is wasteful.

Re: [313] Electro, NYC

2001-02-10 Thread Elliot Taub
I have to pipe up for the NYC team:

Spelunk Records
Serotonin Records

http://www.spelunk.com
I think the serotonin site is offline, but it was www.serotoninusa.com

And by the way, The Egyptian Lover is a separate artist from Southern
California that did a lot of classic tracks: "Egypt, Egypt" "And My Beat Goes
Boom" "Girls". Unless Afrika Bambaataa wrote a track called Egyptian Lover that
I don't know about.

Also, Arthur Baker = Planet Patrol

2001-02-10 Thread Mary Cuddehe
my last message didn't go through for some reason, so if it pops up, sorry for
the double post.

alexander robotnick's newest (i believe) on riot city is excellent. also,
elektrolux and klang elektronik are good labels to check out.
