Try "Angora" on Prescription. It's another Roy Davis, Jr and Pevin Everitt
(sp?) collaboration. Probably hard to find though. They also collaborated on
a record on Cajual, "Live on tha Set" I think it's called. I'm sure there's
been others too.

yeah, this has to be one of my fav records ever! love it! check out his track
'Michael' i think it's called. not as good as Gabriel, but still nice. i
downloaded it from Napster, but not sure if that's still around. Fred from this
list recommended some more downtempo, groovy house like this to me once, if I
can find the email, i'll forward it on to you.

taking off the labels of records to make sure no one can identify what 
you're playing (if that is why you want to do it), is (IMHO) showing a 
complete disrespect towards the artist that made that record. imagine you've 
produced some awesome track, and some dj plays it. then you see someone walk 
up to the decks to see what track it is, only to find out the dj doesn't 
want him/her to know what it is, and has taken of the label. i would be 
extremely pissed, now the dj has made it practically impossible for this 
person to by MY record, just because he wants to be the only one to play 
that tune.
as for 'famous' dj's doing this. not all of them do this, most just get a 
$#!Tload of white labels send to them, and half of the time they don't even 
know the title (or even the artist) of the track they're playing.
there's an interview with derrick may at forcefield.org where he talks about 
this 'problem', check it out.

Detroit techno legend CLAUDE YOUNG has arrived in
town! Rumours have been circulating wildly in Glasgow
these last few weeks & we can now reveal that Claude
will be starting his first ever UK residency at the
infamous Sub Club in the form of his own night, TRUE
PEOPLE, which launches on 
FRIDAY 11TH MAY.

True People aims to be an exclusive monthly party
which will adopt an open music policy, where people
will have access to a wider spectrum of music than
they would normally hear at other techno based nights.
Claude will be djing a 4 hour killer set at each
party, and there will be no booking of big name dj¹s
to attract the crowd here ­ this is a strictly family
affair ­ if guests do appear, they will be friends of
Claudes who are playing at the club for the party &
vibe. (bets are on now to start guessing who his
circle of friends areŠŠŠ.!)

Claude is one of the 2nd  wave of techno
producers/dj¹s to emerge from Detroit in the early
90¹s. He is enjoying worldwide recognition as one of
the finest dj¹s on the scene and is renowned for his
acrobatic style of djing, which he has described as
³hip hop djing with techno records². He travels the
globe almost every weekend, playing to packed clubs in
places like Spain, US & Tokyo on a regular basis. With
his recent album ³Patterns² on Djax gaining critical
acclaim, running his own label Deta Recordings &
setting up his new website, Claude Young is big news
as he becomes the first of Detroit¹s influential
techno figures to set up a club night in Glasgow

"True People" will be what the name suggests, a night

Normal water doesn't do it, unless you keep the record about a year under 
running water. I tried water, all it does it softens the paper of the label, 
so it wears off, but the glue still remains. So you have records with ugly 
mushy white labels:)
Alcohols and other strong chemicals tend to stink long after even if you've 
washed them, so I wouldn't do it...


Sometimes you find old records and they're just in awful condition, labels 
all **cked-up, DJ's writing all over the labels etc... I'd rather look plain 
records.

Why is it so rude? I don't think asking a DJ what they're playing is rude
at, seems to me like more of a compliment, well it's one thing to interrupt
someone when concentrating, but simply asking what a record is at the
appropriate time should not be considered rude, and anyone with that
attitude is way too full of themselves if you ask me. DJ's exist to spread
the music and educate about the music they choose to play IMO

A Couple of things...

Blaubac - Wind Chill
If all you listened to was the first track, you'd think "sounds a bit
too much like the Boards of Canada", but very soon this takes off into
some really nice jazzy, experimental directions while retaining the BoC
type dischordant melodic starins here and there. It also winds up
sounding a bit more 'acoustic' than BoC do. Very good spin with enough
to keep you going back to plumb the depths of it.

Ladytron - 604
I loved this instantly. Very retro kitsch; 80s style klunky synth pop
hooks with a modern knob spin on 'em. Loads of fun and hooks to match.
Maybe it wears off quick (dunno - haven't had it that long), but it's a
fun ride so far.

Dave - Sensory Overload
Great deep house stuff; a bit more lush than a lot of what's been coming
out of Germany but certainly doesn't suffer for it.

VA Praesentiert 3 (Raum...Music)
And speaking of what's been coming out of Germany, this is a lovely
compendium from Raum...Musik feat. Dub taylor, Michael Langlois,
Kingsize XS and Dirk Diggler among others.

Tosca - Suzuki in Dub
I posted a recommendation for this a while back and was a bit surprised
to find it dissed by a few. I'm not sure if the naysayers were reviewing
"Suzuki" (which I found a tad light myself for K&D type fare) or
actually noticed I was referencing the "in Dub" lp, which is Suzuki in
remix . If you're a K&D fan, it's hard to see how this one would fail to
satisfy as (imo) it's one the nicest of its ilk since the "Sessions" lp
and the Walkner & Mostl ep (another great outing - they also do a remix
here).

Quant -  Quantastical Quantasm
I love this. At first I wasn't taken with the spoken-type voacls which
crop up in several places, but the lush, warm, soulful, jazzy DeGiorgio
type hooks resplendant throughout this lp make it a must-have in my
book. And I got used to the vox.

VA Full Fledged (Kanzleramt)
Nice 2cd set of mixes/remixes by Anthony Rother, Heiko Laux, Diego,
Double X, etc. which moves enough to keep you interested and goes deep
enough to be a worthwhile buy.

Labels...take them off keep them on, who the f**k cares.  Do you honestly
think one DJ taking labels off a record is going to impede someone from
finding out what it is?

Tonnes of people flock to record stores everyday in search of that track
that so and so played the other night, they usually don't know what label
it's on or who it's by (remember an 8 point font on a record spinning at 33
and one third r.p.m's equals much dizziness when trying to read in a low
light situation).  They simply listen, and that's what techno has always
been about; the music.  Discovering that wicked track you heard at the club
last week is half the fun of buying records.  If I went out and knew exactly
what I was looking for all the time I wouldn't have half as much fun, and I
would feel  anal for having to always have every tidbit of information at my
fingertips.

Discovery is half the process, and most of the fun.  There's more to be said
about finding that special record, then knowing what it is a grabbing it off
the shelf

[THE BUSINESS POINT OF VIEW]
Realize this.  As the number of producers grows, fewer of them will sell a
great number of records.  As the number of DJ's grow, the number of records
sold will increase.  If your record is good, it will sell.  Also the number
of records made are usually limited, so chances are the record will come
close to, or will sell out if it's any good.

I don't remember the producers paying the DJ to play his records, in fact
last gig I played it was the promoter of the party who paid me, not all the
fine people at Tresor, Kanzleramt etc.  I search out great records to play
in my set.  If everyone played them yet didn't have to spend all the time I
did discovering them (countless hours I can't imagine how much time I spend
in record stores). Then that would make me less of a commodity, and take my
work away from me.

Note:  I don't take the labels off all my records, but nor do I go out f my
way to let people know what they are.  I do plug local artists and let
people know about them all the time.  In addition I'm a firm believer in the
don't bother the dj while he/she is playing.  Imagine if you were playing in
a band and some guy just walked up and started asking you questions while
you were playing.  It's just rude.

Don't get me wrong, I fully respect DnB, half my crew is composed of DnB, we
sponsors Cleveland's best DnB events, etc etc.  Fresh tunes are great, but
why are they so protected, almost violently protected??

And the thing is, I ask all my friends this, and all the DJ's we bring in,
so I know the standard answers, but I don't really see the logic in it...

The whole thing with removing labels is something that has come from the
Jamacian sound system parties and early hip hop battles in the Bronx with
DJs like Kool Herc. The DJs ran sound systems and would often have to battle
with other systems to draw the biggest crowds and being able to play certain
tunes that your rivals didn't know of was an important factor. This was a
practice picked up by the Northen Soul Djs in the UK who played almost
exclusivly rare and old Detroit soul. Because the rarity and obscurity of
the music was such an important element for the scene and its DJs, then
guarding the identity of a tune that a DJ may have searched dusty warehouses
for days on end for was, for some, very imprtant. A DJs career could be made
by simply having a particular tune that noone else could play. In the
context of today's techno scene none of this is so much an issue. The
majority of tunes are readily available and excessable by the time a record
is relesed with a label to even remove in the first place. Some might say
that by practicing this a DJ is putting thier ego above that of the
recording artist and the record buying public and that in actually going to
a club, fighting your way to the DJ box and managing to actually decipher
the title of a rotating bit of vinyl you've put in enought work to earn the
right to own it.
Anyway, just thought I'd add to the debate.
