Jeff Lorber...the Missing Link?

2001-04-23 Thread Charles Prince
Cool to hear someone else is into JL, a true muso's muso...though the further
back you go with his releases, the better they get. In the late 70s & in the
80s he did some great, soulful stuff, full of intricate horn arrangements &
life-affirming, machine-driven jazz funk. I've often thought he might perhaps
be an unrecognized influence on Detroit techno, never having received the kind
of notice reserved for Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Herbie Hancock, YMO, etc., or
to a lesser extent, George Duke. His keyboard chops are phenomenal on these
early recordings, yet there's also a melodic, melancholic vibe, an unspoken
yearning present that lifts much of the material to a new, proto-techno level;
that same moody feel you can hear, for instance, in Carl Craig's "Domina" remix
or Kenny Larkin's masterful "Without." Something about those chords...

A lot of it may be down to the equipment--trying to squeeze new sounds &
emotions out of circuitry that's only just up to the task. On his 1984
'Step by Step' album, Lorber lists: Yamaha DX1, KX1, DX7, Oberheim OB8, Xpander,
DSX, Emulator II, Cooper Midi Interface & Disk drive, Wave 2,3 Waveterm,
Rockman, Linndrum, Simmons, SDS7, SDS8, & Minimoog. The sounds & syncopated
rhythms (aided throughout by tricky panning techniques), remind me not only of
May's classic material, but also of some of Hakan Lidbo's fresh 'Tech Couture'
tracks. And "Step by Step," the title track, with Audrey Wheeler on lead vocals
--powered by a relentless, chunky synth bassline--finds a strong echo in
Recloose's wickedly deep'n'funky remix of Herbert's "Leave Me Now," as well.

Anyway, the best Jeff Lorber Fusion releases are pretty rare now, & his rather
bland-sounding recent output mostly lacks that techno-soul longing for the
ineffable. If you ever have a chance, though, take a decent listen (on a good
system), to "Pacific Coast Highway" off 'Step'...4'42" seconds of pristine
musical bliss that (re)maps mind & body into the sweetest of configurations.

you can get a trial version of cool edit 2000 and use that.

otherwise, there's the nasty horrible evil software piracy route, which
would lead you to a copy of sound forge. but that's immoral, of course. I

I have to add here:

You know those records where you can't believe you're shelling out as
much as you are for only one track? That's the way it was with the
Soundslike 001 promo I picked up a Record Time a couple months back -
they had it at $13, and the only track that really got me was "I miss
you". I debated, and ultimately bought it...and am I ever glad I did.

"I miss you" is sublime, haunting, and a perfect subtle little gem to
drop in the middle of things. It's too sad for a dancefloor, but perfect
for that back-of-the-club lounge where the lonely people are sipping
martinis. It'll send 'em home in tears.

I've since come around to the main track ("Leave me now") as quite nice
in its own right, but it will forever be overshadowed by "I miss you" in
my book.

Cheers,

Bill

Mills Mixer Mixup

2001-04-23 Thread diana potts
Happy Monday!

I've gotten some questions on this privately... so
I'll just post to the list. I haven't seen it yet, but
I've been told that the words part of the Jeff Mills
event review (the one at State Theater) was credited
to Doug Coombe. Doug did the photos but the words were
put together by me. Mix-ups happen...just a part of
freelancing.

I hope this is read in the write way, with only but
correctional intentions. As long as my writing allows
me the things to live, I consider myself blessed.

Thanks

Some D-related stuff from Poker Flat coming up - see below. Also, should
mention that the new (and rather good) Ken Ishii album, 'Flatspin', contains
a collaboration with Inner City called 'Iceblink' - I think it will be a

first, i don´t think the deal with mr.davis is similar to the situation with
mr.Barnett, i never heard cybotron being referred to as strictly juan´s
project
it´s also pretty hard getting the facts thru the mediaheads, they just jump
on stuff, when someone is hot they all of a sudden scream that name every time
they encounter it and all others involved r unimportant. logical, because people
aren´t that interested in who did the tambourine on track 3 off the b-side.
And co-founder, what does that mean?
what does that say about someone´s musical influence...?
i just feel nude photo has derrick may´s signature written all over it... maybe
heavilly influenced by atkins earlier stuff.
that was my point basically...
all later stuff from mr barnett is nowhere near nude photo...
all derrick´s stuff is clearly similar...

I got the !K7 version last week, which is under license from Soundslike...
Has got the original, the Recloose mix (which is dope, of course), a Richard
Devine mix and a track called Back To The Start. This version credits M.
Herbert and D. Siciliano as writers of all tracks, but mentions vocal
samples on Leave Me Now as being by Shingai Shoniwa.
Alrighty?
Andy

PS. Was lucky enough to sneak preview a few tracks on Recloose and Co's new
label Omoa Music last week, including the Ayro track mentioned in an earlier
post about the Recloose mix CD. It's very tasty - just a guy and his sampler
apparently, wicked soulful multitracked vocals and all...

Re: [313] Best of the best...

2001-04-23 Thread john arnold
I think that Dani's voice is so special. I never really go for vocal
tracks, but her work with Herbert blows my mind. I have also heared a remix
done by Recloose of Leave Me Now. I don't know if it's out yet, but it is
the sheeat. I agree with Dan on that Neon phusion track as well. I think
that vocalist is the same woman that is singing on this Loqate
track(recloose remix on Ubiquity) I am playing guitar on. My third pick
would be my roommate Jeremy Ellis(I hope that's not to bias).
I don't know if anybody knows who he is yet, but man he sounds like Stevie
Wonder. He will be performing at the DEMF under the name Ayro. We did a
track with John Beltran on Earth 4 called Aztec Girl. If you can check out
Jeremy.

Hiya

Most important personally would have to be "It is what it is" by Rythim
is Rythim.
I first heard a snippet of this track on the BBC doco "Dancing in the
Streets". At that moment it totally changed my 'musical' life forever. It
took me ages to find this track, but once I did, I started looking for
and listening to records that I never new existed before and discoverd a
whole new wonderful world of music. It was also the start of having no
money as I spent it all on records a day after each payday ;)

I guess everyone has a different version of what's
most important. It just has to be personal. Mine would
probably be something like:

(more or less chronological and rather
Detroit-centered)

Kraftwerk "Trans Europe Express"
Manuel Göttsching "E2-E4"
Cybotron "Clear"
Model 500 "Night Drive (Thru Babylon)"
Fingers Inc "Can You Feel It"
Rhythim Is Rhythim "Strings of Life"
Underground Resistance "The Theory"
Underground Resistance "Hi Tech-Jazz"

pick one track) maybe Mecca ep, Humana, more or less
anything...
