[313] X-Mix tracklist
Hi Fred and other X-Mix interested parties... As I've have said before, I have X-Mix 3 at home, so I will post the vinyl tracklisiting tomorrow. I was going to sell it at one stage since I have neally all the tracks on vinyl. But I never did as I love Cal-Q-Lator Dr. Bradford, and I'm still chasing Scanner Mass Observation on single! I have seen the remix by Claude Young, but never the original track! So funky!! I wonder how many of the X-Mix series were pressed from vinyl... I may contact K7 direct as it seems to be quite rare ;] Anyway till tomorrow!... PS- sorry about the double post... I didn't put a subject first time d-JCB Date: Sat, 28 Apr 2001 19:58:15 -0400 To: 313@hyperreal.org From: Fred Giannelli [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [313] FW: [313] X-Mix tracklist = Free Herbert CD Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'd just like to add that I'm not upset that Studio K7 overlooked sending me a copy of X-Mix 3 on vinyl. I didn't realize they even did a vinyl version for that back then and since I had most of those releases already on vinyl I never asked. Don't forget, when this series was started it was originally only for a VHS video release. The deal was license the track for free and get a free video made. A fair deal and I loved the video they gave me. If I had a dollar for every time I've walked into a club and seen that video on I may have enough to put out a new CD myself. Great exposure nonetheless. Laurent's mix was so great that, they only then started releasing CD's and vinyl and paying royalties. Of all the 3rd Party licensing I have done over the years I've been very impressed with Stud!o K7's accounting. Always on time and always surprisingly substantial. I'm very proud to have been apart of 2 prestigious projects that continue to consistently sell and I'm happy that they are still in print. That Gaetek stuff is ultra rare - it was always supposed to be limited edition, but that is probably not what you wanna hear (or you know it :) ). There is a new comp of his Art releases Selection 98/00 on CD (and maybe there is a vinyl issue too, I can find out) on Advanced Techo Research. WEMF is in July, there is no Memorial Day weekend in Canada, that's a US only holiday. The weekend before that is a Canadian holiday. Last year WEMF sucked because of the crappy location and weather. It is a trance festival with a small amount of techno thrown in. The I-dance rally is probably what someone who posted ran into last year. It was a rally to show the Toronto Mayor who at the time was trying to get electronic music parties banned forever, that this music is more than it's worst parts. It was a great party. The same weekend as DEMF is Mutek in Montreal, a great showcase of the minimalistic talent from T.O Montreal and all over. Is there going to be something similar this year? I know there was a free street party called something like The First House on the Block Party. It used to be thrown by Industry nightclub, but since the club closed I don't know if somebody else is picking it up. I remember heading to Toronto a few years ago to see Mills, and on the way back to our hotel from record shopping we heard a subtle 4/4 beat, which got louder as we walked. At the end of the rainbow we found David Morales and Miss Honey Dijon playing for free in the middle of a huge street party. Not sure if this is the festival you are talking about, but this used to be held on Memorial Day weekend also. Hey! I ran into that party. I remember meeting some people from Detroit that day...hm? I stayed there, called in sick to work and then went to Mills that night. Perhaps one of the better days in my life. Sadly, I haven't seen anything mentioned about a repeat...it didn't happen last year either. But then the party situation has calmed down in the wake of the crack down, which has just pushed everything into the clubs. That's still going strong. Two weekends ago it was Joel Mull and Cari Lekebusch Thursday, Francois K. Friday and then the Kooky Scientist and Juan Atkins Saturday...There's always something going on, don't worry about that. This weekend there's a fun event, the Boreal party. About 60 people hop into canoes and take a three day journey into the Canadian wildernesswith full DJ rig and PA. Saturday night DJ Chocolate and Lex from Legion of Green Men will entertain on the shore of remote lake, far from civilization. I'm not sure if all the spaces are filled, but if someone's looking for something interesting to do this weekend reply in private. The bus leaves Friday at 12:00. You could leave Detroit at 8:00 and make it in time.

Actually I was wrong it Mutek IS the weekend after DEMF, but to confirm for Tristan, it most certainly is not in Toronto. Go to www.mutek.ca for yourself and see the lineup, peruse a well made site. As for Toronto nightlife John, it's bright as ever. Overflowing actually with everything you could ask for. A good place to start looking is the Tribe message board at www.tribe.ca Tribe is T.O's local party magazine, and while the message board can look a little out of hand you will definetly find what you want there. I can tell you right now that on June 1st Herbert will be in town along with Ric y Martin (Ricardo Villalobos and Dandy Jack) live, as well as local house/techno killer Adam Marshall with a live Cuban Band (sorry I forget their name) and my personal favourite Zuzanna Grimm. Hope that helps and I'm sure with a little research you will find a lot more! Cheers todd - Original Message - From: Phonopsia [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: M. This is the weekend after DEMF in Montreal. The line up is amazing. There are archives from last years festival on the website as well as listings for this year. www.mutek.ca records I am enthralled with... Jeff Samuel new joob 7th city can't wait to see what this guy can do, this is clean hard and MINIMAL! Soon to have a release on force-inc! Shawn Rudiman my life my groove 7th city. So there is NO DOUBT for the sat night party... featuring a live p.a. by Mr.Rudiman...expectations are high!! Karl O Connor and Peter Sutton (aka regis female the downwards records proprietors) against nature Tresor This has been out for nearly a year now but the combination of slamming e.b.m. minimal tribal techno and classical ambience creates a record I can't get enough of. The Hakan Lidbo track on clicks and cuts 2 song 2 cd 3...this compilation is great but I can not get enough of this song...DEEP Gary Martin black forest Teknotika currently my favorite Detroit producer. Tribal ethnic grooves with warm bass lines reminiscent of the classic Detroit sound...the Sunday night after parties become difficult to choose as www.teknotikarecords.com is throwing one as well. Dub Taylor forms figures Raum...music deep beautiful groovy sublime and very versatile! He has been pushing the dub house sound for a few years and has put out a masterpiece to go along side the Burger Ink full length! Convexion...Tektite more beautiful minimal dub house similar to the matrix releases. Radiohead Packt like sardines in a crushd tin box... Capitol yes they have done it again, take the major clicks and cuts elements from Kid A and add a thicker kick and deeper bass line while Thom York sings in a more understandable voice...mesmerizing...shame that only a few more songs on the fulllength work this same magic. ... Memento not music but a film this is one of the most amazing cinematic experiences I have enjoyed in quite some time! I saw this two weeks ago and the memories are still lingering in my mind. The Involve Records North American Tour: Detroit

Thanks, Michael Taylor Involve Records (NZ) North American Tour May 2001 Who are Involve? Involve records bring the brightest stars of New Zealand electronica, offering a fresh perspective of non-glitch pop beauty and electro-melodics. Involve was set-up in 1998 in harbour capital Wellington by Bevan Smith, who pulled together a bunch of friends and self confused geeks. Involve has quickly established a reputation as a label to watch along side the likes of City Central Offices (Berlin, Manchester), Morr Music and Carpark Records (NYC) Artists on Involve share a love of warmth and intensity in music whether that be a major 7 chord on a 1972 Gibson les Paul or minor stab on a 1999 Waldorf Microwave XT. Label boss Bevan Smith (Aspen and Signer) and mastering technologist Clinton Mitchell Francis (Isol, All the Pretty Things) are interested in the subtleties of the modern sound of electronica and it's fusion with current popular styles, Pop, Indie, Dub and Techno. That's not to say you'll hear explicit copying, but the process or treatments used in these genres. Their live show consists of synced Laptop Hijinx combined with lush vocal treatments and simultaneous feedback mutation of samples and rhythms. Elements of groove, improvisation, soundscapes and manipulation tweaked in real-time. Current Releases The latest Aspen release 'Music from Passing Cars has been welcomed with loving arms by the electronic music communities both in his resident UK, Europe and the US. Following a successful tour of Europe late last year, with dates in Berlin, Hamburg, Netherlands, Antwerp, and France with Jake Mandell and Maurmari, Aspen is now working in the UK and has appeared at one of London's leading showcases for electronic music (Smallfish.co.uk) and is preparing to play at the UK's most credible festival the Big Chill's Enchanted Garden. What the Press Say ASPEN: Music From Passing Cars CD (INVOLVE) New Zealand's Involve label (on temporary exile in the UK at the moment) return with yet another eye-opener from label boss Bevan Smith. This is the second LP from Aspen and comes not long after the fantastic 'Sugar and Spice' EP for Emanate. This is downtempo territory - lush multi-layered harmonies with a signature electroid sound. While Involve's blinding 'Mandrake' LP went into slightly housey territory, Aspen returns to more electronic listening atmospherics. Surely it must have occured to some of you by now that with a catalogue as varied as the works of Signer, Isol, Mandrake, Aspen and Jet Jaguar, that there is a serious talent on display here...one that requires your attention. RECOMMENDED. Pelicanneck.com, Manchester UK LOVELY SUBTLE AND MINIMAL SOUNDS FROM ASPEN (AKA BEVAN SMITH). LUSH MELODIES, WARM BEATS, AND AN OVERAL DEPTH - SHINE THROUGH. THIS IS QUITE BEAUTIFUL. Smallfish.co.uk, London Aspen 'Music from passing cars' 2001 Both regular and uncertain, the rhythms that caught aspen's ears during those long drives from Wellington to Titahi Bay (Porirua) and beyond (New Plymouth, Taranaki). During this time aspen composed himself a soundtrack to drive by. 'Music from passing cars' isn't an exact representation of this, but it evokes the same feelings of escapism/release. Phrases and melodies are overrun and cycled endlessly as trees, pastures, and curves pass by. Rhythms and space don't quite match up. Sometimes a phrase lasts for too long, other times things pass before they might be noticed. There's a live feel throughout and evidence that aspen can't really play, but then you who can when you're stuck in that place between home and destination and home. I'd have to say that one of my fav's is the tracks he did on Saker oss imellan on Djupt under the name jori juhanna, (there were also tracks by Cari Lekebusch under the name Kari Pekka).. One of the tracks (the first, the name escapes me) has a ton of detroit feel to it... A really nice pretty yet driving track... Kind of in a Nude Photo vein, only a bit deeper... I also had the opportunity to see him play with Jesper Dahlback in Boston at LIFE... They were quite good... The last nine hours of this set (see below) are now archived on deephousepage.com - Mix #547. I forgot about it all day Saturday and remembered around 10:00 pm. As I went out that night I listened and I heard them announce that Steve Silk Hurley had performed. I kicked myself all weekend for missing this, but hopefully it's in the archives. I have yet to check this out (will tomorrow), but they were sounding mighty fine (as usual) during the last hour - assuming deep vocal house is your thing. It turns out that next Saturday is their 12-hour 11th anniversary show. You won't want to miss it if you like deep vocal house or deep house classic mixes like those you find in at http://deephousepage.com They currently have a big picture of the Diva KP and DJ Oji on the intro page. In fact, the 10th anniversary show is archived there. You might also remember DJ Pope's output on Cajual, or may be familiar with their releases on Bassment Boys and Poji Records. At any rate, they will have lots of guest spots this year as last, and it wouldn't surprise me to hear some of the local legends like Doug Smith of 95 North, Sam The Man Burns, maybe even Ultra Nate and I'm sure there will be others. These folks are the hidden jewels of the Baltimore/D.C. area. It runs from noon-midnight EDT. It can be heard around the world here: http://158.103.6.15/welcome/weaa.ram Tristan -- http://ampcast.com/phonopsia - Music http://phonopsia.tripod.com - Mixes, pics, thought, travelogue info [EMAIL PROTECTED] - email FrogboyMCI - AOL Instant Messenger _ Do You Yahoo!? The Time Machine cd is now out on Axis...unsure about the vinyl version. Paperclip People's The Climax is being re-released with a new Basic Channel mix...anyone heard this yet? I was reading an interview with Kevin Saunderson in UK mag Wax. Apparently he's set to open a new Detroit club in collaboration with C. Craig, K. Larkin, D. May. It's going to be called DKCK or something (they're using their initials), will be rigged with a top-notch system. Wes
Was anyone else weirded out to see a 2 pg DEMF ad in SPIN?
I'm not griping - I'd want to see DEMF become absolutely huge, but, well, you know what I getting at. mark
