[313] carl, drama, etc. (long)
In regards to the drama of the last 12-24 hrs... Carl Carol supposedly came up with the idea of having the festival together', however I think we all know who really wanted what, and for what reasons. After all, PCMedia is behind Carl stepping down; not behind Carl himself. She leads the pack of people stabbing him and all of his supporters in the back. The city will hopefully realize down the road how it has shot itself in the foot; does anyone really think the festival will be as peaceful when limp bizkit headlines in 2 years? Carol Marvin should have thrown in the towel after the World Party fiasco, now it's like she's got something to prove as the promoter of her event. She hasn't promoted this music: Just her name. The bigger the corporations Pop Culture Media's aligned with, the more money and fame for her, right??? PLEASE: Do what Diana suggested and show your support for the truth. Somehow. We need to stick together through this. You know damn well if Carl were fired completely---PRIOR to the festival, how many dj's would step down with him? I know one already and I'm sure all the Planet e artists, etc. would do the same. Lastly, Carol was pissed she had to front money for a couple artistswhy do all these artists need so much up front anyway? Re: [313] The vultures move in...
I have serious doubts as to whenther people like Kirk Degiorgio or Francisco Mora and the Outerzone Orchestra would appear on Carol Marvin, SFX and the commitee's lineup next year. I have a feeling it would be more like Sasha Van Oakenweed and the Ford Focus Dancers, with Regis Philbin and the cast from Survivor as guest MCs... From: Otto Koppius [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313 313@hyperreal.org Subject: [313] The vultures move in... Date: Fri, 11 May 2001 21:13:45 +0200 A quote from the Freep article: ...city officials say Craig failed to meet city-imposed deadlines requiring contracts for artists who are scheduled to perform Memorial Day weekend. The city, which co-presents the Hart Plaza festival, requests 30 days for processing the deposits made to artists to secure their appearances. Those payments can run in the tens of thousands of dollars. No matter which way you look at it, this alone is not sufficient ground for firing a creative director of such a successful festival. Two possible explanations: 1) He did a lot more things wrong than this that they want to keep the lid on for his and the festival's benefit or 2) they were looking for a way to get rid of him and now they've found a reason. My money is (obviously) on the second explanation, since it so obviously reeks of media manipulation. Paraphrasing the article: Carl didn't do the organizing side of the lineup well (the contracts) and he didn't do the content side well (not enough Detroit on the lineup), can you blame us for booting such an incompetent guy? Bollocks to that. Any bets on the chance that next year SFX and 89x will be on the ...advisory board made up of artists and others in the Detroit techno industry. Note the 'others'... Re: [313] CKDK club plans...
This club has been in the works for a while; I don't think they want it to be a superclub in the tradition of the UK ones but rather a hi-tech version of the Music Institute - with a great sound system. Also they were going to have part of it as a museum, a way of documenting the culture. Also unlike say Ministry Of Sound or Home in the UK it wouldn't be for just anyone to come in, they would make it somewhere you wanted to go because you love the music. The idea was to pull people into the city to hear the music. It was to give the city a boost. I remember Derrick told me about it years ago and I am really happy to hear renewed talks of it. Have faith in this project - the guys behind it all have the very best intentions, it's a dream for them, less so a 'venture'. RE: [313] TWILO!!!
Twilo may not be the place that you feel most comfortable in, may not have the vibe of some nameless other clubs, but when people rip it on that sound system, there is not much out there like that (Mills and a few others are the ones i'm talkin about, not Sasha and dickweed) --- John Osselaer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Grr, just subscribed to the NY Times to bring you this: From today's NY Times City Closes Dance Club Over Problems With Permits By ERIC LIPTON wilo, a popular Chelsea nightclub, was shut down early yesterday, at least temporarily, after the police and building inspectors raided the club and evicted hundreds of patrons, saying that several of the club's building permits were missing or invalid. The move comes as the Giuliani administration intensifies its long- running battle against a handful of Manhattan dance clubs that city officials say are havens of drug use and occasional violence. No one at Twilo was arrested in yesterday's raid, police officials said. Instead, officials shut the club, at 530 West 27th Street, between 10th and 11th Avenues, after determining that its certificate of occupancy and place of assembly permits had not been properly issued or maintained. Officials also said that the club's fire protection plan was not up to date and that it had not gotten required approvals for first-floor renovations. A Department of Buildings spokesman said the six-year-old club, known for its electronic music and dancing that lasts until well after dawn, would not be allowed to reopen until the violations were resolved. They are shut down until further notice, indefinitely, said the spokesman, Paul Wein, adding that a June 21 court date had been set. Peter R. Sullivan, a lawyer for the club, said the violations were technical and called the club's closing unjustified. Absolute guaranteed it will be reopened, he said. The enforcement tactic used yesterday reflected a strategy by the city to no longer issue or renew permits to Twilo and other troubled clubs, unless ordered to do so by the court. That means that if a permit expires or needs to be amended, even for a relatively minor inconsistency, the city may refuse to do so and then shut the club down, Deputy Mayor Rudy Washington said. For example, part of the justification for closing Twilo yesterday, officials said, was that its basement assembly permit was invalid, at least in part, because it was issued to Sound Factory, a club that used to operate at that location. Mr. Washington was not ready to declare a lasting victory against Twilo, saying that the city's action could be overturned in court. It is now their move, Mr. Washington said, referring to the club management. This is not over by no stretch of the imagination. The Giuliani administration has been trying to close Twilo since at least November 1998, when the city, citing the drug overdose of a patron, filed a lawsuit declaring the club a public nuisance. City officials contend that clubs like Twilo and the Tunnel, another West 27th Street establishment, do not do enough to prevent the use and sale of drugs like ecstasy and GHB, or gamma hydroxybutyrate. But the clubs have just as vehemently responded that they are doing their part, hiring private security officers, including some who work undercover, to try to prevent drug use and violence. Mr. Sullivan said the fact that the state courts have allowed Twilo to stay open despite the lawsuit was proof that the club was well managed and dedicated to preventing drug sales. City officials, meanwhile, said that the evidence of the severity of the drug problem at Twilo is on display when the club is open: management hires a private ambulance to wait outside, ready to take patrons who have overdosed to hospital emergency rooms. The Giuliani administration's dance club enforcement effort was stepped up after April 9, when Terrence Davis, a 16-year-old who had been ejected from the Tunnel, was stabbed to death about two blocks from that club. A fire broke out at Twilo on a weekend night about a month ago, but the club was reopened the same night. Mr. Sullivan said the city's efforts were misguided. It is very sad that the city continues to hide the absence of a policy concerning drug abuse by the dancing public by demonizing Twilo, he said. Twilo regulars, some of whom learned of the news yesterday on the club's Internet site, seemed to agree with Mr. Sullivan. Almost all clubs have fire code violations, one patron wrote on the site's message board. The patron called the code violations an excuse to ensure that there are no bumps in the road in Giuliani's Disney-gentrification plan to have NYC become an ultraconservative suburb. Why was it shut down? All those private ambulances waiting for the OD'ing kids? check:

It`s not the first time Derrick said things like that, he even said that a lot of the artist from Detroit that came after him and Kev and Juan were just doing it for the money. Re: [313] carl craig asked to step down!
and don't forget the salaries commitees = lots of time and no decision. i was thinking about his whole advisory committee thing. maybe its not a bad idea. lets look to other areas of the world that use committees to choose. the NCAA and the basketball tournament selection committee begin with parameters for who should make it into the tournament. each member of the selection committee has different ideas and are fans of different teams. however when the committee meets, they use their collective opinion and ideas to select the teams. i think that the artistic worth of future demf line-ups would be better with a committee that represents detroit as opposed to the (right or wrong?) opinion of carl craig. just my opinion...no harm no foul _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am saying this in the most non-political way I can...which is hard. amen to that. What would happen if we started a bit of a underground resistance of our own. I'm not down with boycotting the festival but what if those who had planet E Tshirts wore them say on Saturday or Sunday..one day in particular in support of Carl and saying in a silent way that as a community we support him and recognize all this won't damage him or his career in anyway possible. we should start a save carl campaign, just like the save ferris campaign in Ferris Buellers Day Off Im working on my shirt now. :) __ Do You Yahoo!?
