[313] Terry Riley IS minimalism

2001-07-26 Thread Jayson B.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

in the spirit of minimalism you left out pertinent info...terry who?

Terry Riley. Back in the mid 60's the man Essentially created Post-modern
minimal music. Its Funny, because i was a fan of his before i listened to
Minimal Techno: when people mentioned Minimal Techno, at first i was
confused, mainly due to the fact that minimal techno isn't nearly as minimal
as, well, Terry riley. He has this song called Iceburg. Essentially its a
30 minute long track of Violins playing one chord and changing how they
strum the strings with the bow (its more interesing that what it sounds).

anyways, the man is playing at the DIA thursday. 20 bucks and you'll get a
nice perspective as to where minimal techno artists got their groove.

 Sure,
I guess Brendan is working on a new album- not sure when its going to be
done. Also you may want to look into another Ann Arbor based label called
Ghostly International (i think the owner- Sam Valenti- may be on 313).
They just started last year and were doing more IDM, but I hear the're
putting out an Electro comp. soon featuring I-F, Perspects, Legowelt,
 maybe Adult, stuff like that.

 Anyhow take care,

Windy and Carl will also be on this bill. According to Windy this will
actually take place in the DFT. It will really be nice to see two acts
mellow acts in such a great venue.

I saw a Hans Roedelius playing piano last fall at the DIA, it was a lovely
concert. He was playing these hypnotic minimal piano pieces, very much in
the vein of early 80's Harold Budd. It was dry, but very beautiful music all
the same. I second Jayson's recommendation, if there is a quality act coming
through the DIA it is very much worth your effort to go see them.

What kind of material is Terry Riley touring these days?

take care,

[313] Leave the Volvo at home - Sydney specific

2001-07-26 Thread Aural Industries

Taken from CitySearch Sydney Clubbing Newsletter (Wed, 25 Jul 2001):

Leave the Volvo at home for the minimal bleeps of Adelaide groover THUG,
oming over all Frigid this Sunday in his only Sydney appearance:

http://www.sydney.citysearch.com.au/E/E/SYDNE/0007/67/75/

Thug (aka Adelaide electronic producer Tim Koch) released his extremely
clever debut, Isolated Rhythm Clock, on the Aural Industries label, to much
ocal praise.

Described by Sydney press as oscillating between the complexities of
Autechre and the melodies of Boards of Canada, Koch successfully melds the
emotion and synaesthesia of the minimal genre with harder-edged aesthetics.

His second release, Please Don't Tell Me That's Your Volvo, has more of an
Atari-game bent, squeezing all he can get from '80s electro and hip-hop
sounds.

Koch's live gigs are fraught with bleeps, blips and loads of energy, with
Frigid regulars Sub Bass Snarl and Sir Robbo. Guests include Robokoneko,
Disjunction Reunion and Ollo Experience.

Andrew Trimboli, CitySearch

All his CD's available on the night for the bargain price of $10.

RE: [313] Moby, underground techno

2001-07-26 Thread Berislav

In the beggining techno was underground, but then it was only techno, today
everybody that use somekind of filter is techno.

So if we talking about big events you cant make event, book Moby, FBS,
Underworld(without emerson), Paul van Dyk and call it Techno, because its
POP.

So if I follow your reasoning then Jeff Mills, Laurent Garnier, Richie
Hawtin, Dave Clarke, Mark Broom, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Claude Young, Ken
Ishii, etc... who all play or played the I love techno party together with
Underworld, Pills, Mixmaster Mike and others for 3 people here in
Belgium (which does qualify as a big event me thinks) do not play techno but
pop?
I'd give a lot to hear their opinion on that...

you can stop that some records go out of thier original place on scene, but
when you start to make songs with that purpose you are history for
underground electronic music. Then you go on Top of the Pops.

When I heard Laurent Garnier play 'Man With The Red Face' live as early as
1999 I don't think that he made that track with the specific purpose of
becoming a hit record. If you could actually know which techno/house records
will cross over into the mainstream I'm willing to bet that all names
mentioned above would not hesitate to make such a track.
Or did you think that Rolando's 'Knights Of The Jaguar' was pre-conceived to
becoming a hit record? He would be glad to hear that...

I could be misreading your thoughts, so feel free to correct me.

And at the and of a day, i see, that one leter is missing-t ,i mean you
CANT stop some records...
And by that i also mean on Rolando, and Laurent Garnier etc. Im still saying
that moby goes in studio and makes songs like pizza`s. A little bit of
everything on top and its one million selling record.

I think the message was aimed more towards the POP headliners such as Moby,
Oakenfold, Underworld, etc.., NOT at their more underground stage partners.

Do you honestly believe that when Underworld made 'Cowgirl' and
'Dubnobasswithmyheadman' that they were aiming to becoming a pop-band? I don't
think so, they were just trying to bring there version of the music we all know
and love: techno. The way they evolved was not the way I liked, so I just
stopped buying their records, not because they lost 'underground-credibility',
but just because I didn't dig what they made.

Point being if I flip through the MAJOR FM radio stations I may pass that
shitty Moby track on a POP station. I'm not going to catch slak or
Elektrostatik EVER on those same stations.

True, just because major FM stations cater the majority of the audience which
would rather hear Moby than Elektrostatic, not because they do not want to
support the underground, but just because they just don't dig the music and
rather hear things they know.

Needless to say, I meet these dumb azz f*ckin promoters from time to time
and consider them mostly a disease. They have no concept whatsoever. They
are just trying to make a buck and be cool at the same time. Throw a bunch
of names on a flyer, add whatever local talent is pandering to you, hire a
bunch of stupid light systems, and voila. Instant success party.

Sorry to burst your underground bubble, but when a promoter asks Derrick May
and Jeff Mills for his party he too is trying to make a buck by putting a bunch
of names on a flyer. He just chose a smaller market which is much easier to
target and is almost surely a success.

Personally
I'd rather shoot myself in the foot than attempt to throw a party of that
caliber.

Well, why don't you get behind the screen and try to throw a different party
then? Don't get me wrong on the previous paragraphs, I do agree with you to a
great extent concerning the big events having no concept and only out to make
money, but that goes for pop as well as techno as any other musical form. I
myself have been throwing parties since 1993, and continue to do so to this
very day with just one thing in mind: fun and music. I haven't gotten a penny
out of it, but the memories and thank you's of my friends have made up for that
in huge fashion. But I do not claim to be underground, I'm just bringing the
music I like to whoever wants to hear it. So stop complaining and just do it!

It was in a recent Autechre interview that they discussed art without a
dissident edge, basically saying that without that propulsion away from the
establishment or from compromise the art isn't really communicating anything
revolutionary or otherwise.

Does art really need to be revolutionary? I don't find Jeff Mills' 'Every Dog'
revolutionary in the least, but for me it is well and truly art. Is it
dissident? Not at all IMO, but it's just good music to my ears, and that's all
that matters.

I think these people (wack promoters) should go get a job at a burger joint
and contribute more to society. I won't tell you what I REALLY think they
should go do...

I do believe that organizing a concert for 1 people and making their day is
a bit more contribution to society than serving burgers and being attacked by
antiglobalist-movements, but that's just my opinion.

Back to you!

[313] Ishkur's guide to electronic music

2001-07-26 Thread Dennis Donohue

Just found this site, and laughed my bloody head off.

http://ishkur.com/features/music/guide.htm

I especially like the description of techno: Techno is the depressing,
gritty dystopian genre. But what it lacks in soul, it more than makes up in
purity of sound and a mythology so romantic it can't possibly figure out
what to do with itself.

I also like how Detroit techno stems from Classic techno, and how the
bangin' techno eg:jeff mills - the bells formed out of tribal techno eg:
Peace division - feels my drums

Check out the description for tribal techno: This goes hand in hand with
trance alot. The goal is the same: to get the people naked and dancing under
the stars. So who wouldn't be up for a little tribal action.

Chris Gray's (Deep4Life records and EFnet #313 member) got a decent Deep
House mix up there called Apt 3A. There's a couple of hiccups with the
mix, but overall it's pretty nice. The suprise track for me was St.

years.

BTW, if any of you use IRC, stop by EFnet's #313 channel.

[313] 4th st fair...sat 072801

2001-07-26 Thread kbk
this saturday is the 30th annual 4th st fair, a celebration of one of
detroit's hidden gems of a community. the 4th st in reference is literally
one block of homes which was spared demolition when the M10 I94 freeways
were built. nestled in the armpit of the intersection of these 2 concrete
canyons lies 4th st. the fair is like the dally in the alley with less
crowds more freaks (yes, that is possible). highly recommended.

anyways, this year is the first year the fair will feature a house music
stage. i don't have the whole lineup in front of me, but i know it's a lot
of the folks associated with 'deep house detroit' such as waxmaster d smooth
craig huckaby, dj watts dj seoul...

it's free, there are 2 other stages of music, roller derby, ngo female
wrestling, beverages, food, supreme people watching.

you can call 313-871-6449 for info. it's quite difficult to visualize where
it is if you've never been, but take woodward to antoinette (it's south of
the new center area, north of wayne state) and go west till you almost hit
the lodge. you can usually park on third street and then walk a block west
to all the action.

enjoy -

For those on the West Coast, Seiji is playing several dates in San
Francisco and Los Angeles. Seiji is one of my favorite producers
from that West London scene!

...he'll be on the beta lounge tonight (7.26) at 7:30pm west coast time.

Re: [313] scan 7

2001-07-26 Thread ryan burns

you can get a copy from Record Collector. talk to vince.
i just want to say one thing about scan 7 track on the tresor comp. it
sucked. i dont understand, undetectable on UR is one of my favorite tracks
in the world. then he busts out with the mediocre crap. at demf 2001 i saw
a flyer lying on the ground of all places. i picked it up and said there
was a new 12 coming out. i did like the 'i am from detroit' record.

Hello,

Good friend gave Domenic from the Sub Club his Scan 7 - 'I am from
Detroit/You have the right' rekid, and has been
basically told he's not getting it back, (well I did tell him not to gave
to him), know he's on the look-out for
another copy, anyone know of any internet (preferable europe) where he can
pick it up again

thanks

jason

Re: [313] Re[313]:the master of minimalism on thursday

2001-07-26 Thread Michael Taylor
Actually, come to think of it there is a Kompakt record that has a track
with a sample from Moon and Melodies by Harold Budd and the Cocteau Twins.

It is one of the first 10, but I cannot remember which one off the top of my
head.

take care,
mt

If one looks under ghetto tech, it lists that style as the
greatest in the world. ghetto tech artists tend to be
based in detroit. I like the choice Ishkur uses for the
background sample... DJ Assault's Ass n' Titties. Detroit
city music at its best for sure! How come there isnt more
discussion on this list of Assault or Godfather?

Just found this site, and laughed my bloody head off.
http://ishkur.com/features/music/guide.htm
I especially like the description of techno: Techno is the
depressing, gritty dystopian genre. But what it lacks in
soul, it more than makes up in purity of sound and a
mythology so romantic it can't possibly figure out what to
do with itself.

I also like how Detroit techno stems from Classic techno,
and how the bangin' techno eg:jeff mills - the bells
formed out of tribal techno eg: Peace division - feels my drums

Check out the description for tribal techno: This goes hand
in hand with trance alot. The goal is the same: to get the
people naked and dancing under the stars. So who wouldn't
be up for a little tribal action.

I've noticed that a good number of producers tend to look down their noses
at Ghetto Tech. Personally, I think it's great. Always good to get a party
jumpin.

Anyone remember about when the discussion of West London/broken beat House
was on the list? I just checked Jan. of this year and couldn't find it. My
interest has been peaked after listening to Dego's set from DEMF2000 and I
think this was the type of stuff that was playing on the third floor at
the
 All Access party. Great stuff.

First two weeks of April. If you like this style, you should check nortroute
on Wednesdays. It's always a treat. The Betalounge and Nortroute are the
only two places online to offer this stuff with any regularity from what I
can tell. Perhaps Groovetech does too? Anyone have specific archived sets
they like?
