If State Farm won't cater to your insurance needs, shop elsewhere for home owners/renters insurance. It's cheap and I've never heard of exclusions to policies like this, although many auto policies have a limit or restriction on stolen CDs in cars. Are you living in a house, because your home owner's insurance should cover it the way it would cover your TV or stereo in case of fire/theft/etc. If it's an apartment, you should be able to find an insurance company somewhere to set up a policy. If quarterbacks can get their arms insured for millions, someone should be able to cover a few turntables. [313] dogs do have their day
I just couldn't withhold my opinion from the ongoing Mills debate. It is a topic I have reflected upon most recently after receiving 'Metropolis' for Christmas and after reading various online interviews with the prodigious gent. My conclusion is as follows: Mills himself is a mental giant capable of quite profound strings of thought. He is a philosopher at heart, using music as a vehicle for his musings and ruminations. Excited by the prospect of elaborating on the thematic content of his art, he attempts to ascribe a linguistic element to the creative process. However, this is where he falls short. It could be that his conceptual capacity exceeds our modern language (without falling into the traps of lofty philosophical and scientific tracts, which are written for an elite set of self-congratulatory academicians) or that his powers of exposition are simply lacking. Whatever the case, I believe his passion, awe, and sincerity shine through. If your sensibilities are so tweaked by Mills' inadequate attempts at eloquence then just listen to his music. Ignore their context and create your own. Meanings in music are more often than not self-imposed anyway. And the futurist/sociological implications aren't necessarily a bad thing. Subjects of the sort lend credence to an otherwise superfluous art (not my thoughts, but many people tend to perceive techno as a faceless, drug-addled, boom boom sort of cacophony -- not my opinion, mind you). At least it demonstrates awareness and ponderance, two characteristics which most pop artists can't touch. Toodles. RE: [313] every dog vol 3
True. The embarrassment bit though ... hmmm. It's never crossed my mind (ever) that techno was not an analogue or allegorical too what I feel to be man's eternal yearning for the future ... But this yearning, does not seem to be about technology per se (although the theme of what machines can do for man has a certain poignancy to us who live in 'The Future' which classical Sci-Fi envisaged, 'cause machines have expressly NOT liberated us ... certainly not our spirits) ... It's more about 'Electric Dreams' than dreams about electricity. I can understand however that not everyone who likes this spectrum of music, is a dreamer ... :o) >-Original Message- >From: james boylan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] >Sent: Tuesday, January 08, 2002 4:57 PM >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Cc: 313@hyperreal.org >Subject: Re: [313] every dog vol 3 > > >I think some people are slightly embarrassed by the futurist >philosophy/mythology that sometimes informs techno and look upon >it with the >same disdain as punks did on some of the excesses of progressive rock, >musical or otherwise. > >Personally, I like some decorations, so to speak...be they heartfelt, >insightful, tongue-in-cheek or just plain pretentious rubbish. > >Its always intriguing at the very least. > > > >>From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >>To: "Lester Kenyatta Spence" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >>CC: 313@hyperreal.org >>Subject: Re: [313] every dog vol 3 >>Date: Tue, 8 Jan 2002 08:30:30 -0800 >> >> >>Well, yes I see your point. That Mills stuff sounds like classic jive-nonsense talk. I think it's actually supposed to be funny; if you read it aloud it has that kind of swing rhythm... I don't think he is going for the Serious Jazz mode, or else he *should* hire you to do the liner notes! Mills made some great art many people here posting on the list would never ever !!! been able to make,. One reason why they couldn´t make it, is that they always do know what things should be like. Why shouldn´t Jeff Mills write down the things he wants to be connected to his music in the way he wants it to be written - yes - we want to talk about the ideas and visions we do have too here, and we like to talk about the Detroit-music and art, the things we love ... but please, let´s be more respectfull to the vision of the people, who are creating it especially to the artists, who are not in the mainstream-arena If they connect their art to anything, it might be a part of them who are making that music don´t break it upart, as long you ain´t sure it get´s done for commercial reasons if you say "it´s completely unneccesary" that´s your vision how things should be but don´t always tell, as if that´s the only way things should be like just read some of your comments again and think about it - > i am really like the music mills but it got nothing to do with that. > I personally think mills is being a bullshit artist because his writings > sound a lot like your average guy trying to project intelligence through > abstract CD liner rantings. > >Am I the only one who gets slightly irritated by people thanking God for >their musical abilities?
