Yes, to this day Chris Liberator adores Alan Oldham because he came up to
them and laughed about it - something like, I'm from Detroit, I'm
 intelligent and I'm 'avin' it.

Rightly or wrongly, the idea behind the title according to the guys was a
dig at the UK dance press, not Detroit, which at the time was very
snobbish
about counterpointing the US music against rave culture. (Oh how soon that
evaporated, with the rise of that old UK imperialism.)

Most of those guys, especially Chris, have backgrounds in punk music. They
have a good allegiance with Carl Cox too.

Until lately those guys' scene, the squat party/acid techno scene, was
ignored by the UK press but apparently their records have been supported
by
 the hard house contingent.

Until lately Chris was living in a council flat, so they are humble guys.

I think there was an article in Seven in which they cited an appreciation
 for early UR stuff.

They come out to Australia a lot.

Me, I actually LIKE the Liberators! They know how to rock a crowd and
keep a
positive vibe going. It's true, it's not brain food (mostly - I heard
'Moonraker' by the Foremost Poets first dropped by them - the original
mix)
but it's damned good fun! Most importantly, they've still got this idea
about dance being something like a unifying and catalytic social force.
(Naive, I agree, but I'm a sucker for sincere idealists and triers). And
underpinning the compilations of medieval acid, is always a push to get
people involved in their environments and take control of their lives -
  usually politically.

  Sound familiar, Detroit?

I had a laugh recently when I read a track title on one of Chris' latest
mixes 'Hackney Council Are A Bunch of C*nts'! I think the Nuclear Free
Zone
parties are still running at 414 (Brixton)... I'd recommend them.

Regards. this is a funny question. a couple of weeks ago me and a pal went
to some second hand shops in tel aviv.
now let me tell u this - u can find there only new-wave and shite like that.
most of the tim u will not find any techno or such, since the techno scene
in israel is very small and very very little (not more than 300 people).
i found there D-mob acid on FFRR for something like 10 USD. its mint new
and my guess is the dealer didn`t know what it was. was it a good price???

I bought my copy for $7AUD from a second hand store in Adelaide.

It's on BCM (Brian Carter Music) Records.
It says it's by Honest 69 (written by Lil Louis) and has a comic type
picture of a couple kissing on one side of the records and the other side is
of lips.

Tracklisting is A: French Kiss (Triple M Mix); French Kiss (Diamond Mix).
B: French Kiss (Hot Version).

Does anybody know when this version came out?

cheers

Cut and paste link as necessary.

Who needs a crowd or a DJ? Furthermore, what is a DJ anyway?? We're so
expensive and unreliable. So, why do I even care about the music? I
should just compile Soundscan charts and Top Ten lists from Bar Nightclub,
then download the tracks and be on my way. After all, data and statistics
are really the most accurate and reliable indicators of, well, everything!
Man, I **love** mp3s.

Listen to the audio report, if you have the capability.

I wonder when this DJ-I will win the DMCs, and how FS tech fits into it all.

Hoping this inspires some heady discussion,

Vince

To the contrary, I think this quote from the article says it all:

It also seems to be about having a bit of a laugh. Chris Csikszentmihalyi,
Assistant Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the Media Lab, cannot
resist poking a little fun at human DJs who take the project far too
seriously and feel their midnight hour is about to be taken away.

Sure, of course it is. Yet I still have a sneaking suspicion that this fall
firmly into the category of we did it because it was a fun thing to build,
not we did it to replace Richie Hawtin or Carl Cox.

As I was pointing out earlier, the article says as much.

This really isn't especially (313) relevant, though. Also, don't take my
examples too seriously - I don't necessarily consider either Hawtin or Cox
to be the pinnacle of the DJ craft.

TC I picked up a great 12 in Rubadub yesterday by DFA (Deterministic
Finite
Automata), snappily titled 'Microstructural Chracterization' on
Surveillance
Recordings from Detroit. 3 tracks of minimal but extremely soulful and
melodic electronic house/techno, very very nice indeed. Just wondering
if
anyone had any more info on DFA or the Surveillance label, and if
there's

any other recommended material worth checking out?

Hey Tom,

If you recall I put it in my top 10 for 2001...can't say as I know anything
about the artist or label though...

TC Their website (http://www.surveillancerecordings.com/) looks great but
 there's no actual content...

I found http://www.surveillance.net doing a quick search but that is
another

label altogether...though also from Detroit, and also techno. Seems
strange that there are two Techno labels in the same city with the same
name!

Lemme know if you find out anything! It would be nice if someone could
shed

some light on the subject.

Ohhh and for something in a similar vein you should check out AJ Hunter's
Pressure Point EP on Parotic Music, track it down and you'll find it's
well

worth the effort... It's probably the most interesting record I bought all
of last year, seriously deep Techno/House with a Chicago feel and
intriguing programming - the record has such a beautifully textured sound
to

it (if that makes any sense;-)

Cheers,

m*
