Designer Music Volume 2? Not quite a remix in the ordinary sense I guess.
Before that must've been 'Programmed'? I think he's workingon a Shop album

[313] Fw: Dr. Lektroluv's surgery re-opens...

2002-07-29 Thread Tom Robbins/Magic Feet
ARTIST: VARIOUS
TITLE: THE NEW PRESKRIPTIONS OF DR LEKTROLUV
LABEL: NEWS
FORMAT: CD (mixed) / 2 x VINYL / 7" PICTURE DISC
RELEASE DATE: 30/09/02

Following hot on the heels of the first Lektroluv compilation, the good
Doctor has already been rummaging in the crates for the next instalment.
The debut volume set a benchmark for modern electro compilations, the
upfront tracklisting managed to neatly showcase the burgeoning modern
electro scene. Since then many of the recent compilations that have flooded
the market appear to have taken cues from the original instalment in terms
of tracks and artists!

First time around the tracks were segued together into a flowing whole
without overlapping, but for New Preskriptions the Doctor has spent longer
in the studio, working the tracks into a cohesive mix and and even adding
his own treatments and edits to a few of the tracks.

The mix opens with Crossover's 'Lucida Obscura' and is indicative of the
song based direction that this volume follows, as the track has a great
sense of energy and the proto rap helps to keep the tracks age ambiguous.
The Parallax Corporation have allowed their hymn to sexual repression 'Fear'
to be included and it may be that electro fetishism is the way to bring sex
back to electronic music. Well renowned Finnish oddball Jimi Tenor's 'Take
Me Baby' sounds like Ian Curtis has risen from the dead and been adopted by
the Gigolo crew.

Crème De Menthe's 'Plastique' combines a big modern riff with androgynous
vocals and eighties reverbed percussion, and has been one of Hell's secret
weapons for a while now. Legowelt vs Orge Electronique's remix of Hong
Kong Counterfeit nods heavily in the direction of Maurizio Dami (Alexander
Robotnik) and the other unsung heroes of the Italian Disco era and
thankfully manages to avoid the sloppy vocals that so often marred the
genre.

It can be easy to dismiss the new wave of electro as opportunistic bandwagon
jumping but artists like Japanese Telecom have been working within the genre
for many years, its just finally the media have caught up with them.
'Planet Rock' needs no introduction. Two tracks from Dutch electro fiend
Dexter sandwich Drexciya's 'Funk Release Valve' a prime slice of aquatic
Detroit electro techno - whoever said water and electricity should not mix
hadn't heard this.

'Errorist' by Artist Unknown starts of with abstract beat programming but
slowly builds with heavy synth riffs, whilst the Rotten vocals hark back to
days of safety pins and pogoing. Memory Boy's '(There is no) Electricity'
has been grabbing peoples heart strings for a while and was ripe for
inclusion here. 'Parallax View' is an electro DJ's staple and has remained
in many spinners crates since its release eight years ago! Dave Clarke and
Andrew Weatherall have championed Detroit's Adult. for a long time and
finally last years dedication to telephone sex 'Hand to Phone' acted as a
break through track for them and it is the original version that is included
here. Adult. turn up again remixing Phoenicia's 'Odd Job' and manage to
demonstrate how punk and electronic music can go hand in hand.

Tracklisting

01 crossover - lucida obscura (**)
02 the parallax corporation - fear (*)
03 jimi tenor - take me baby (*)
04 crème de menthe - plastique (*)
05 hong kong counterfeit - metal disco

[313] David Alavarado*Auburn

2002-07-29 Thread Odeluga, Ken
... Like to post a heads-up about his latest on Ovum, not everyone's
favourite label, but anyway ...

The side I'll remember and I hope hear out is "Auburn."

Builds from a 'tribalish' percussion sketch, overlaid with cavernous,
echoing and deep spoken words, for maybe four minutes. Then a wistful flutey
synth melody comes in ... and it all gets quite heart-string tugging.
Alvarado is well known for his subtle and mellow productions, this is no
exception. But something in it imho (I don't quite know what) lifts it above
his high standards. Pls check it out.

Fwd: [313] mail order question

2002-07-29 Thread - BT -

Neil,

I ordered from Submerge recently and it took about 3 weeks for the package
to arrive in Scotland. I would guess it just depends how many orders they
are getting and what other projects they are working on.

I recon with the new website and the amount of labels that they have added
that they are focusing on this just now so I would say give them a try.

I also got a bunch of flyers etc - including an invite to The 10th Birthday
party of Metroplex (I think its a bit late but its a nice thing to have ;-)

Cheers
BT

hi

have any europe peoples had any experience ordering from submerge? theres a
few things i want to get and im just wondering if its worth just trying to
track them down from various places here in the uk or if submerge are
reasonably fast at filling orders?

[313] Derrick May

2002-07-29 Thread Kerr Graham
Derrick May played the Sylvester track during his (somewhat lacklustre) set
in the Atomic Jam arena at the Global Gathering on Saturday night.I have the
Trevor Rockliffe track and it's not that - damned if I do which version it
is though.Raised a smile anyway.
Surgeon and Ben Sims came to the rescue of what on paper looked like a
premier night out - Sims in particular re-inforcing my view that he's about
the best techno DJ in the UK at the moment.

[313] Lost With Francois Kervorkian & Derrick May

2002-07-29 Thread Odeluga, Ken
I personally had an ace time as expected.

Thoughts: Francois Kervorkian did not disappoint me, although I know he did
some people. His style isn't often seen at Lost: Very long mixes, with more
attention paid to layering and painting new parts of the current groove
rather than changing that groove ... so some people reported getting bored.
He of course played some sterling stuff. Including not only wild disco which
perplexed the hell out of me but also glitch techno which did the same. All
in all, his evident enthusiasm and ability to be patently moved by the music
as much as the crowd, endeared him to me.

Derrick May was supberb (if I had a penny for everytime ... etc). He played
'Strings..'! He played it in the last half-hour. I found his selection to be
very thoughtful. In the last fifteen minutes he broke it down almost
completely, took off the beat and overlayed a kind of free jazz thing over a
simple bass motif. Then he went away and fiddled a bit and gradually built
it back up, but with disco and funk, before ending on something more techy.
I'd rank it amongst the best I've seen him play.

I agree with comments on the venue. It's ideal, the sound is crystal clear,
it's massive, although we did note that the Lost event in the same venue
with Aphex Twin and Richie Hawtin was much better attended maybe as
much as 50% better.

The next Lost is with Jeff Mills, 25.8, UK Bank Holiday and Notting Hill
Carnival weekend.

Low Res is Danny Zelonky. He's released material on Plug Research, and is
half of Trash Aesthetic, along with Allen Avenessian (Plug Research

The Trash Aesthetic record on PR (PR008) is great, by the way, as is the
criminally underappreciated first Mr. Hazeltine record by John Tejada ("Mr.

Re: [313] lost

Messy!

Mr K was superb, not as diverse as perhaps is the norm, but still managed to
play nearly 3 hours of deep techno. Those new Scion remixes of the BC tracks
were magnificent. Mr May was excellent as per the norm. The venue is
perfect for Lost, with an outside area perfect for cooling off from the
searing temperatures inside. Very good sound system as well.
