[313] I'm a moron who missed UR in Cali or RE: Request for UR review

2002-08-07 Thread James Hurlbut
HHH! I wish you had posted something about this before it happened. I
am still hitting my head against the wall and its two weeks after Mad Mike,
Wanda and Buzz Goree came out here to a FnF campout. I never heard about it
until after the fact while skimming the sfraves list. That list is great
for event info but it's not a list with a high 313 to
happy-hardcore-trance-in-my-pants ratio so the UR subject line caught my
eye. I guess Buzz Goree spun and Mad Mike and Wanda went along for the
trip. Here's a copy of a sfraves post which is a copy of a FnF mailing list
post which is a copy of an email from Mad Mike to FnF:

from the FnF list:
Excerpted from a mail I just received from Mad Mike:

I think events like what i just attended will always help so tell
everybody i took a little Cali back to the D w/me amazingly me and
Wanda have lit candles prayed and there has been no warfare since we
left so technically friends and family has extended well beyond the
ranch and into our souls too...nothing but success can come
 to people like that.
mad mike, wanda and buzz had a great time at FnF, and they'll probably be
coming back.

The general consensus seems to be that while Buzz's set wasn't technically
brilliant, it was a great mix of electro, bass, and techno that is rare out
here in the bay area (I moved up here from LA a few weeks ago). But as you
can tell, I'm a moron that wasn't 'in the know' and didn't 'get to go'. But
it sounds like they had a great time so my fingers are crossed that they
will come back soon and do a live UR set with the original members
including Hood and Mills ;) If you hear anything please post it to the
list, or to me, so I can save myself future head injuries. Hope that made a
little sense and gave you some sense of fulfillment, as it just sank me
deeper into grief for missing the campout. Maybe someone else out here
thats on 313 was there and can post a more useful review? Hope I didn't
scare anyone by yelling at the top of the post.

He also has at least a couple of mix CD's available from recordtime. He
recommended me his techno mix a few months back when I was buying the Bone
and Rolando ones saying they are in the same vein - he was right. And
recently there was a house one added which I must say is even better IMO.

[313] Fw: Detroit Beatdown Vol. 1

2002-08-07 Thread Tom Robbins/Magic Feet
3rd attempt to get this through to the list, have had to edit some out to
see if that helps...

Artist: Various Artists
Title: Detroit Beatdown Vol.1
Label: Third Ear
Distribution: Baked Goods
Format: 3LP/ 2CD
Cat. No.: 3E CD 001/3E LP 001
Streetdate: 7/10/2002

Featuring new and exclusive tracks from Theo Parrish, Mike Clark, Alton
Miller,
Eddie Fowlkes, Rich Wilhite, L.A. Williams, and more.

Many of the artists on Detroit Beatdown Vol. 1 have been making music and
playing in the clubs of the American Mid-West, which includes Detroit and
Chicago, for a very long time. Detroit is famous as the place where the
qualitative step was made from House to Techno, and the development of a
particular type of electronic music which is now known as Detroit Techno.
But in Detroit, the labels which are attached to the music in Europe and
elsewhere, are not really evident. Musicians, producers, and DJs tend to
refer to it all as Techno, or Dance Music, or Electronic Music or House,
depending on who you talk to.

As a result of attention paid to musical developments in Detroit since the
mid-1980s, and the particular bias that has resulted from record company
press releases and the music magazines, What has been labelled 'Detroit
Techno' has stolen the limelight from other strains of electronic music in
the city. Generally speaking, this is justified, although it demonstrates a
lack of concern for the facts among record company promotion departments and
music writers over the period. Within Detroit, or specifically within Eight
Mile Road, the culturally recognised boundary of Downtown Detroit and 'The
Suburbs', it has been noted that 'Techno' has been more the outsider and
remained virtually unknown, and there is an element of truth in this.
Certainly the music which has come to be known as 'Detroit Techno' is
difficult to find, but electronic music made in the city is played in the
bars and clubs, and much of which is known locally as Techno.

Beatdownsounds.com is a website dedicated to Beatdown music. In it's early
incarnation, Theo Parrish, Kenny Dixon Jnr., Mike Clark, all had mixes on
the site. It is telling that, even among the British music press, where the
urge to categorise seems to have been overwhelmed by the quality of the
music produced by these artists, all are regarded simply as coming from
Detroit.

This might also be more to do with the fact that their music defies
categorisation by the categories available, and a conscious effort to avoid
categories by some. Other artists featured on the Beatdownsounds.com website
included Terrence Parker, Norm Talley, Delano Smith, Rick Wilhite. Terrence
Parker is regarded as the don of Detroit House. Norm Talley, for all his
deep minimal Techno tracks, mixes the sweetest House sets or proper Disco
sets. Anybody who hears Kenny Dixon Jnr or Theo Parrish DJ will here the
whole spectrum of black American music. Rick 'The Godson' Wilhite, also.
Eddie Fowlkes is known as the fourth Godfather of Techno, after Derrick May,
Kevin Saunderson, and Juan Atkins. This has been as much to do with the
ability of the others to promote themselves, as with their undeniable
abilities. Yet to hear Eddie Fowlkes DJ, is also to hear a wide variety of
music. On reflection, this is not a characteristic, even, of the DJs
associated with Beatdown, but of all Detroit DJs. Derrick May, Blake Baxter,
all the genre-defining Detroit Techno DJs play a wide spectrum of music,
displaying a broad knowledge, soul, and technique.

The best way to get a handle on what Beatdown is, is first of all, simply to
listen to any of these artists DJ, then imagine them going 'beat-down'.

TRACKLIST

Disc One

 Malik Alston: Butterfly
 Alton Miller: Tulum
 Theo Parrish: Falling Up
 Rick Wilhite: Ruby Nights

Re: [313] it´s not oooooooooveeeeeeer

2002-08-07 Thread Jonny McIntosh
I had another listen to Ron Hardy playing this a few weeks back and I'm now
sure it's his own re-edit of the Pettibone mix, probably splicing bits of
the accapella in there too- It's not oveaaah, oveaah... :) I dunno about
Derrick May.

As it happens, I picked up a copy of the Salsoul 12 recently. It seems to
me that the Ramshorn issue is just a straight reissue of the Salsoul, but
with far less information. Unless there are two Ramshorn pressings, you've
already got the Frankie Knuckles mixes. Now let me tell you something...,
the tracks on it should be:

A1. Shep Pettibone Vocal
A2. Shep Pettibone Inst.
A3. Accapella.
B1. Frankie Knuckles Vocal
B2. Frankie Knuckles Inst.

Though are probably not listed as such. The Frankie Knuckles one starts out
with that wicked string line (which is played by Larry Heard on the Mr
Fingers 2 on Housetime, I discovered today, along with riffs from
Problemes and There but for the Grace of God). And the instrumentals
aren't merely instrumentals but whole new mixes.

HTH,

Jonny

[313] Kurbel Stuff

2002-08-07 Thread Tristan Watkins
Picked up a couple of Kurbel records a few weeks back and finally got around
to giving them a proper listen this weekend.

Kurbel 022 - B2 - Thomas Kufner: Maginus
http://www.kurbel.com/cgi-local/listen.cgi?stream=kur022-b2
This is clearly the stand-out track on this comp IMO, but all four have
something to offer and showcase some of the range of this label. I can't get
enough of this Kufner track though. Anyone have other recommendations from
him or is he a newcomer? The synth sounds on this track blow me away. The
Real Audio doesn't come close to doing it justice, especially since you need
to hear it easing in to appreciate this snip of the song.

Kurbel 019 - B1 - Ho! Happy Days
http://www.kurbel.com/cgi-local/listen.cgi?stream=kur019-b1

This Lab Insect record is very solid. I've chosen this track because it
mixes so well with the one above but I like all 4. If you vistit the kurbel
site, make sure to check out this guy's picture, playing an acoustic guitar
with a *nice* mohawk. :)

Thanks Armin, this is the one Derrick played FOR SURE!

RE: [313] I'm a moron who missed UR in Cali or RE: Request for UR review

2002-08-07 Thread Grammenos, Peter

just curious if buzz played a track with a bee sounding buzz as the melody.
it's not swarm either. anyone have any ideas? he played it at the Ultradyne
party in the D this past DEMF. Very smooth set btw, i enjoyed his selection
of tunes and he did enough tricks to warrant being in the UR camp ;) ...

review

Jamie

Memo from Alex Bond of PricewaterhouseCoopers

 Start of message text

What's the deal with these ugly edits 12's?

Can you not get them outside of Detroit?

Anyone seen them anywhere? The only place seems to be e-bay where they're
$60+

I managed to get the first one, but now there's more.

Does anyone know which tracks have been re-edited? I heard Big Bazza White
was on one..

Can anyone help?

Thanks.

RE: [313] videos?

2002-08-07 Thread ani
the detroit grad pubahs 'sandwiches' is one of the most bizarre videos i've
seen. definitely a must-see. dwarves running around with enormous pickles,
ordinary looking girls (not video-type girls) dancing or doing aerobics, and
baby pools full of mayonnaise. a friend loaned me a copy when it first came
out. anyone else see this?
