[313] blaktroniks article

2002-08-19 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Blak Power
Oakland's Blaktroniks looks backward -- and forward -- with its
Afro-futurist brand of techno
BY PHILIP SHERBURNE

from 8/14 sf weekly

Blaktroniks
Details: will perform at the Elektric Soul festival on Sept. 29 on Treasure
Island
The event runs from noon to midnight and features Massive Attack's Daddy G,
Fila Brazillia's Steve Cobb, Mixmaster Morris, the Different Drummer Sound
System, and more

When Blaktroniks played recently in the former East Germany, a neo-Nazi
turned up at a show -- a not uncommon sight in the club scene there. The
guy didn't cause any trouble, but he did drink himself into a stupor and
pass out -- prompting the promoter and Blaktroniks' Eddie Smith and Badi
Malik, both African-American, to carry the skinhead to a nearby bus shelter
to sleep it off.

The gesture, while broad-minded, wasn't totally altruistic. The skins have
[clubs] spooked over there, says Smith. They're like Hell's Angels. So
even though he was messed up, we couldn't just dump him anywhere. The
incident provides a glimpse at the strange path of Blaktroniks' career --
one that winds through international waterways, black musical history, and
extensive laptop circuitry.

Plenty of Bay Area dance music artists have launched careers abroad -- call
it the Big in Japan syndrome -- and Blaktroniks is no exception, having
garnered fervent support internationally while capturing little attention
here at home. Active since 1996, the duo has put out four albums, three of
them self-released. The most recent, Seduction at 33 1/3, appeared this
April on Moving Records, a Heidelberg imprint set up by scene maven Magnus
Miller to issue Blaktroniks' output. (Miller chose the label's moniker
because, he says, Blaktroniks' music is some of the most moving music we
know.) The German connection testifies to a flurry of interest in Europe:
The crew recently returned from a dozen dates in Germany and Austria, where
its recordings were championed by leading music magazines such as Spex and
De:Bug. The Teutonic exposure isn't surprising, given that the Blaktroniks
sound -- a fusion of grainy minimal techno, RB, hip hop, spoken word, and
polyrhythmic funk -- exemplifies the kind of hybrid soul that German
audiences crave. Yet there's been virtually no English-language press
dedicated to the group, and many Bay Area electronic music insiders know
little about Blaktroniks beyond a fleeting recognition of the name.

Not surprisingly, Blaktroniks didn't intend to sell records in the Bay Area
at first. When we sat in our office in '96, we decided that we were going
to take it straight [to Europe], and not try it here, Smith recalls. It's
harder to bring it straight to the people here than to bring it straight to
the people there.

Having been introduced by mutual friends in the mid-'90s, the pair formed a
business plan based upon the frustrations they'd experienced in the music
world. Malik, a software engineer and Minneapolis transplant, recalls
presenting a project to artists and executives in L.A. and being told that
he needed to learn a thing or two about melody.

I realized that they had no clue what this type of music was about, he
says.

Smith, a barber by trade, had been experimenting with electronic music and
hip hop production since 1993. In that same period, he'd worked as a
choreographer, a role that helped him make plenty of insider connections --
and left him leery of the expectations of labels, promoters, and even
listeners. Here in the States, or in San Francisco, it's better to push
yourself as a rapper and just do a rap album, or RB, and fit into a
bracket, a stereotype, a box, he says. But then you've got to compete
against everybody else that's the same way. And then you've got to sound
like somebody that people already like in order to succeed.

Blaktroniks' version of electronic music doesn't fit into this model. Early
albums such as 1997's Process of Illumination display elements of robotic
electro, steely techno, and rough-edged drum 'n' bass, with counterpoint
melodies that bend dance music's linear thrust. Like Illumination, 1997's
Return of the Afronaut also projects the group's mission through the twin
lenses of technology and black consciousness: The liner notes explain in
purposely skewed text that Blaktroniks is the branch of physics that deals
with the behavior of free blaktrons, blaktrons being the darkest known
huemans, constituents of all huemans. The recent effort, Seduction at 33
1/3, pushes these musical ideas to new heights. Opening with Fais Moi
Fremir, a fusion of smooth RB and avant-garde glitch textures, the album
veers from the burnished-aluminum feel of underground dance music to the
brisk skip of hip hop. While the lush atmospherics of Serenade wouldn't
be out of place on KISS-FM, the convoluted rhythms of Teknik Cleansing
could daunt all but the most adventurous of dancers.

Our albums kind of sound like compilation albums, admits Smith, but we
produced every track

RE: [313] the advent - news

2002-08-19 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Well most excellent news! However, comparing the atmosphere of the 'techno'
scene in late-summer 2002 to when the pair (temporarily) disappeared by and
large, abt 4 years ago, things have changed a great deal. Especially in
London, the hard-driving, teutonic flavoured 4/4 brand which they've got
down to a divine art (imho of course ;o) has been superceded but maybe
they've changed too hmmm, no Japan dates so far.

patented, but I doubt whether it's possible to patent the principle of
records as an analogue interface between the dj and mp3. Of course some
comany's going to try and copy it.

Yeh, I've tried it out and, despite being sceptical beforehand, I have to
say I was extremely impressed. There is no obvious latency (and I was mixing
quite agressively) and the UI is very straightforward. Plus, you can assign
the same track to both records for instant doubles :-)
Having said that, I'm not going to buy it as I rarely play outside my home
town (in fact, these days I rarely play in my home town!), but for a
travelling DJ its gold dust. No crates to lug around and a massively
extended selection!

True, but being able to play Mp3's you already have would be handy. I
don't think it'll replace your vinyl collection just extend it. The
other problem is you need a laptop. I know it doesn't support it at the
moment but it'd be a good idea to put in support for Mp3 player
connection, ie. load up all your tracks onto Mp3 player and take that
with you. This would probably mean extending the unit (for UI) and extra
cost. I can't understand why they didn't put a small HD in the unit? or
something like a zip slot.

You need the laptop because it does all the processing, as far as I know
the external part is just an I/O box, everything else is done in
software.

[313] inertia - nowhere to run

2002-08-19 Thread jurren baars

found a copy of inertia - nowhere to run a couple of weeks ago. didn't know
exactly what i was buying though, the name just seemed familiar. then took a
look at the catalog number etched in SP-12, and the artwork looked like it
was by DADARA, who also did the artwork for outland records and it's side
label spiritual records. so combining the 'SP' inscription and the DADARA
artwork my conclusion was it was a spiritual release.
until today! i checked marsel's retroactive-page on forcefield, and what do
i see? the very same record is on retroactive!
now i've got a couple of questions: how rare is this record? [if it had cost
more than the 3.50 euro's i've bought it for, i probably wouldn't have
picked it up! - that's because i didn't know what it was, not because i
don't like it.]
is the artwork by DADARA? i know outland had quite a few blake baxter [with
orlando voorn] tunes out, and many detroit artists have stayed in the
netherlands at one time or another.

thanks,

jurren

There already is a company that's copied the concept...I can't seem to remember
the name (of course). The UI is a little more graphically heavy (looks really
cool tho)...but it comes with coded vinyl and connection pieces as final
scratch does.

(the UI controls for each disc look like the large controls on a dj style cd
player)

...I think it's a little cheaper also (probably not much cheaper)

I am curious about the Final Scratch records themselves, has anyone played
around with them, are they actually vinyl? Do they feel like a record? Is it
metal or what? I know I can read a description on their website but I'm
interested in firsthand actual test-drives.

Also I wonder if you can throw some REAL records into a set on one or the other
deck, to be able to go from laptop MP3 to an actual 12, and back again. OR --
once you start a set with Final Scratch, MP3s are all you can use?

Half the fun about a gig is doing a last minute record store fly-by to see what
you can find that's brand new... or working in someone's white label that a
friend just handed you. Having to encode them all prior makes for a little
less spontaneous-ness, would be a cool bonus if you can mix both medias.

Peace,

Hi Matt,
yeh, the records are vinyl and feel just like normal records.
Also, there's no problem playing other records in a set as well as using
Final Scratch. The FS box feeds back into the line inputs on your mixer, so
you can just switch back to phono and take the driect input from your deck
if you don't want to use FS.
I'm starting to feel like a Stanton rep :-)) Wonder if I can snag a free
set-up...

[313] CHICAGO:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:8/24

2002-08-19 Thread Greg::Malcolm .

LIVE @ THE DEADTECH GALLERY
3321 W. Fullerton Ave Chicago IL 60647 : http://www.deadtech.net

A night of fine electro-organic experiments and dance-floor feet shuffling.

Saturday August 24th, 9pm...$5 Admission.

FEATURING:

TWINE/PHASE4
Hefty : Bip-Hop Records
Urban Mag describes the Twine/Phase4 performance, “With its intricate
colors, abstract shapes and organic texture, the video seems like a visual
equivalent of Twine’s music…the work of Phase4 is based on similar ideas
that are being used in so much music: de(con)struction, abstraction,
decontextualisation...”.

GREG DAVIS
Autumn : Carpark Records
Carpark is certain that arbor is the harbinger of a new type of music we
like to think of as laptop folk. Not to be confused with the genre
folktronica, laptop folk’s aim is to integrate the digital and analog
domains. Whereas previous attempts trivialized or treated the electronic
element as a novelty, arbor makes no musical hierarchy. At the beginning
of this new century…”

WARMDESK
Deluxe : Fallt Records
The sound of warmdesk, aka Bill Selman, combines dense, noisey harmonics and
dub-like bass with rhythmic patterns and samples from everyday life. the
desire is to create a multi-faceted spray of sound grounded by a pulse of
polyrhthmic beats (not too far from minimal techno and tech-house).

CRAQUE
Craque is one Matthew Ross Davis, a Chicago based experimental electronic
musician. Opi8 describes his music as “blunted, spastic electro beat, too
fast for the chords trying to keep up with it, too juddering for the
rubber-earthquake dub bassline that rumbles up out of the depths a few
minutes in. It's stratospheric, rocket-fueled experimental dub.”

M.MERCER
409 : Forte Records
Classically trained on the organ and piano from an early age, Matt Mercer
has been producing music for years, starting in a more ambient/experimental
vein and moving more and more into a four on the floor tech-house sound.
Bits and pieces of anything and everything flit in and out of the mix,
recontextualized, reorganized, reenergized for the dancefloor.

there a lot of people who are looking for the retroactive releases

assign
the same track to both records for instant doubles :-)
Having said that, I'm not going to buy it as I rarely play outside my home
town (in fact, these days I rarely play in my home town!), but for a
travelling DJ its gold dust. No crates to lug around and a massively
 extended selection!

 Sean.

Definitely no laptop. Yes, special records with timecodes
 which you prime
the MP3s to recognize. I think it's just records, software ...
 I've seen
Final Scratch slipmats though so maybe those are included ...
 those are the
 clincher for me ;o)

How much $$$ does it cost?

Well, in the UK I've heard something like £460. Quick dollar
 translation: at
730 am your time (EST) dollar is at $1.53, which makes just over $706.

 Is that good value?

All true, but nobody mentioned that you have to record all the tracks you
want to play first.. and convert them to MP3, right?

This seems a very big work for someone that has more than 4000 records, each
 containing 4 tracks

2002-08-19 Thread robin pinning

Just bought a copy of Sean Deason's LOVE ALARM EP today, great record but
track B1 skips like mad Does anyone have the same problem??

yeah i checked mine over the weekend...looks like the preesings are all a
bit dodgy then on that track as mine skips as well (juts before the
breakdown on b1)

maybe the full release (is this just a test release?) will get a better

I doubt whether it's possible to patent the principle of
records as an analogue interface between the dj and mp3. Of course some
comany's going to try and copy it.

Indeed they are...
