(313) [313] i'm so happy!
hey folks. i'm so happy... i have finally acquired a second technics 1200! no more mixin' mp3's. both of these decks used to hold residence in a hard-scrabbled biker bar in columbus, ohio. according to the serial numbers, the decks were manufactured around 1986. i have revived them from a beer and tobacco stained life of neglect. i can't wait to mix keith tucker with les mccann. don't try and stop me... i'm just crazy enough to do it! peace, lrh

Re: (313) Record Collector - Ferndale, Mi?
The Record Collector has been around for ages - the first one was in old Redford not quite 20 years ago. A second one was opened on 8 or 9 and Grand River - now it's in Ferndale and has been there a while, just across the street and down the road (west) from Record Time. Warren Westfall manages the place and is a muso and a walking encyclopedia of musical knowledge (although he doesn't keep up with techno details). I used to work for Warren when he managed Full Moon records in Pontiac (late 70s, early 80s) and at that time he was the only person I knew with more vinyl than me. I think he had well over 10,000 pieces at that stage. Although he's very eclectic in taste, these days he gets excited about neoclassical stuff. Warren used to manage Ann Arbor's Algebra Mothers in the throes of Detroit's punk movement (late 70s- early 80s). His store is a GREAT place to go binning for used vinyls - especially vintage 80s material. I picked up mint Vicious Pink 12s there last year for *cheap*. He gets some more recent things in as well, but it's more about used things. Great place to shop and Warren always hires people who know and are excited about music, so it's a great place to learn as well. Tell him I said hi if you check it out. He's a big guy, late 40s, brown hair and probably a light beard. After that, drive over to Livernois and 8 mile and stop by my friend Deans's bar, The Buddha Lounge. Great place and Dean is very cool. In fact, I have a list of greetings you can take to various places - y'know, people I nee to see whom I haven't for ages. And would you mind picking up a few groceries for me while you're out? :-) jeff At 11:47 PM 9/21/2002, Pryor, Ryan N wrote: I just came across this address for a store in Ferndale called Record Collector. Re: (313) Record Collector - Ferndale, Mi?
That place is really old. The one in Livonia closed down. They are good for your indi-rock/punk-rock stuff but I've never had much luck finding dance or electronic music there. It's been a few years though. They are definitely a good resource for old funk and rock records. (313) let no man put asunder
this is like the 20th email I send to this list with this subject... but I have another question on my all-time favrourite disco song: wich version it is that ron hrady, farley, derrick may sample to make their own reel-to-reel edits? I thought it was the original mix, but I bought the album delusions and the version of 'let no man put asunder is only 4 minutes, and there is no aw shucks in it etc... maybe thier is an extended version of this around on a single 12 wich is longer? with parts of beats + vocals , whithout the bassline... Thanks, Maarten

(313) Bleep43 and Mills
First off, thanks to Toby, Ken and crew for putting together an excellent night last night. I don't have a lot to say about the music, except that it was really diverse (within the electro spectrum) and fun. I spent a good chunk of the night meeting 313 folk (hello 313folk!), so was somewhat distracted from the music. There were a mess of people up at the front of Public Life dancing all night long though. I'm sure others can comment better on the music (I'm not much of an electro expert), but I'm also sure people will agree a good time was had by one and all. Around 2:00 I embarked upon an unusual trek to The End for about an hour wait to get in for Mills (I thought myself lucky it wasn't longer). Got in around 3:30ish to hear Mills playing house! Throughout the next two hours he shifted between house and techno, going all over the musical map. Robert Taylor said he was even playing some disco (which I missed unfortunately). What I heard of it was a really great set. I hope The End put it online, because it was one of the best sets I've ever heard from him (recorded or otherwise). He was supposed to play through 5:00 and played 'til 5:30, at which point he received a huge ovation. What an appreciative crowd it was! On that note, the crowd was a bit more candy than last week but the attitude was good. Towards the end of his set he did a crazy 909 solo for about 5 minutes. Other than that it was scattered throughout - just the right amount. Also, he was really tight all night. I heard things nearly start to slip a few times but he was always right on it. No sloppiness at all for the agressiveness of his mixing at those times. It was also nice to see him pulling off some really long mixes. He spent a lot of time looking for some records, really chosing his moments to let tracks play or bludgeon on 3 turntables + 909. I was really, really impressed. He is such a deft master of his craft and such a gentleman, shaking people's hands, taking pictures, etc afterwards. I imagine that's got to be a bit overwhelming with loads of Mills minions accosting him at once, but he took it all in stride. At any rate... it all came together really well last night. I'm so happy to see the techno scene in London so alive and up for it! Yay techno! My faith is being restored. :) Favorite trainspotting moments from Mills' set: 69 - My Machines Joey Beltram - Energy Flash Loads of Mills, especially the Every Dog-esque moments All of this was great to hear on that sound system. I fear for my hearing... So has anyone heard the new album 'At First Sight' they were flyering for last night? Coming out on Axis/React? So has anyone heard the new album 'At First Sight' they were flyering for last night? Coming out on Axis/React? Yeah, I heard a promo copy a couple of weeks ago - it's pretty good, in a similar kind of vein to the 'Every Dog...' series, maybe a little tougher. I dunno, nothing really stood out for me but I'd certainly like to hear it again... And the Carl Craig 'Workout' double mix CD forthcoming on React is excellent... Cheers, Tom

I wouldn't rush to the shop for it but i really do like it. Nothing new to hear but what you hear is really nice! -- [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'll defo try to avoid my sister that time... ; ) What Tristan wrote about Mills' set was spot-on. I really enjoyed him playing all sorts, loved every single minute of it and danced all through his set. The crowd had a fab time, and Jeff himself was bopping behind the dexx most of the time, too. Great stuff! (Sidenote: Mr C is about to beat Jim Masters as to who can play the most boring and funkless sets at The End.) [...] Favorite trainspotting moments from Mills' set: 69 - My Machines Joey Beltram - Energy Flash Loads of Mills, especially the Every Dog-esque moments He played Relight My Fire during the disco bit that you missed (amongst some other hits that I forget now), and it made my favourite cheesy moment of the night when everybody was singing along. ; ) All of this was great to hear on that sound system. I fear for my hearing... That's the reason I wear earplugs in there. I had to use the ones I normally wear for swimming cos I lost my old ones but I have to say they appear to work really well. No problems at all today. They're Speedo's, in case anyone wants to know, and iirc they only cost around £8 or so. Cheers, Anya
