If information on old and obsolete techno records is putting people out of
business maybe they should consider a career
change.

I like the more practical approach of acquiring information.
People would just have greater understanding of the artist and labels that
have contributed to the Detroit techno genre.

It's only information what you do with it is what's important.
Besides we live in the 21st Century I like the concept of new technology
making old methods obsolete.

(313) deep & sexy.

2002-11-11 Thread Anya Stang
Was it here that some peeps were talking about deep&sexy House music?
Can't remember for sure but it was something that kept bugging me somehow...
Then there was all the talk about the fab performance Francois K put in the
other week at Plastic People (and I wasn't there : / ), and that brought it
back to me tonight. "deep and sexy" is a mix cd by Francois K on Wave Music.
I dug it out just now, and does it keep its title's promise! With songs like
Eric Kuppers presents Organika "Havana", Blue 6 "Do Ya Like It? (Body&Soul
Dub)" and Francois K "Enlightenment" 'tis indeed very tasty. Recommended.
Soz for being a tad OT (again...) but had to share that I was able to access
a small part of my memory for once. : )

The website is excellent http://www.soulfuldetroit.com/ - exactly what I've
been looking for. It was cool to see Jamerson Jr. sit in with the Funk
Brothers - representing his dad (and those are some big shoes to fill!).
I've always been a huge Motown fan - grew up listening to it in my mother's
kitchen when I lived in San Jose, California. Looks like I've now been
hooked into finding all the obscure and unknowns. I also hope to find the
end of the rainbow so I can use the pot of gold to pay for all my future

The "human delays" referred to here has to do with the fact that the
players have to play patterns that are one or more eigth notes out of
phase with everyone else. Furthermore, patterns often START in unison,
but then someone has to gradually (30 secs. to a minute) speed up and
then lock their pattern back into the stream a partial measure ahead.
It goes against pretty much every instinct you have about playing with
other musicians, but when you can get it to happen it's really fun and a
pretty amazing aural illusion.

Hi folks,

A little shameless self-promotion here, but some of you might be interested.

This Saturday, November 16, I'll be playing percussion with a
contemporary music ensemble called Alarm Will Sound at the Walker Art
Center in Minneapolis. The gig is part of a 3-day event called Festival
Dancing in Your Head, and will also feature the Kronos Quartet.

Among other things, we're playing the complete version of Steve Reich's
"Drumming" and Phillip Glass' "Music in Similar Motion".

The 313 connection? For intermission and setup change music, I'll be
doing tech-house remixes of the pieces from the concert via a laptop
running Ableton Live.

I'll have to mention also Johnny Griffith, pianist, who just passed on
yesterday -
http://bassland.net/johnnygriffith.jpg

LEGENDARY MUSICIAN JOHNNY GRIFFITH OF MOTOWN'S FUNK BROTHERS DIES AT THE
AGE OF 66

At the request of the Funk Brothers we make the following announcement:

DETROIT, November 10, 2002 ? Pioneering keyboard player Johnny Griffith of
the Funk Brothers, the band that created the music of the Motown sound,
died on Sunday, November 10, 2002. He was 66 years old.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Griffith was one of the few classically trained
musicians who played at Motown. In his early years, Johnny toured with
Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington and Aretha Franklin. Johnny's contributions
to music history can be heard on such songs as "Stop In The Name Of Love,"
"Wonderful One," and Marvin Gaye's "Heard It Through The Grapevine."

The Funk Brothers respectfully noted, "Johnny was a superior musician and
incredibly fluid on his instrument. He was a large contributor to the
Motown sound and to the group of musicians proudly known as the Funk
Brothers." Griffith marked a dream come true this past Thursday night by
appearing with the band during their performance at the legendary Apollo
Theatre in Harlem. The performance was part of the premiere for the launch
of Standing in the Shadows of Motown, a new film that recognizes the
achievements of the Funk Brothers.

Griffith is survived by his wife, Delma Reid Griffith, and three children,
Jonathan Jr., Beth and Rhonda. He is also survived by two step sons, Roman
and Charlie Reid III, and two grandchildren, Ronnie and Shaynae.

The Funk Brothers are the group of musicians the helped to create and
define the music of Motown. Their work can be heard on hits from such
performers as Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye,
The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, and many
others. The Funk's vital influence on music remains to this day, with these
musicians having played on more number one records then The Beatles, The
Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley combined.

well fist of all your putting infornation out there that's not easily
accesable so it's more practlicle for people who have a genuin interest and
curiosity about the music to learn about Detroit techno.
Your also archiving an important part of history in a convieniant package
for future refrence.

> I think it's more rewarding to

certain aspects of that can be rewarding but it's mostly a hastle and very
time consuming.

regarding the whole section above:
I don't understand. On one hand you're talking about having information put
out there so that it's easier to find out about and those with genuine
interest/curiosity about the music will learn about it.
But then when you say that teaching yourself by reading about it, listening
to DJ sets, randomly listening to old records and digging through old
magazines is "a hastle and very time consuming."
Who is the one with more genuine interest? The person who, without a
one-stop shopping place for all things techno, goes out and finds out for
themselves, dedicates time and money and goes through the "hassle" - or-
the person who wants the quick and easy fix of finding everything in one
place?
The information I have in my head and the records I have are more important
to me *because* I've spent sh*t loads of my time digging it all up,
searching it out, and going through the hassle of it all.
Sounds like you want an easy answer.

Yeah. I was really surprised to hear a white label of one of these a little
over a year ago. It seemed to have a great techno sensibility, for whatever
that's worth. I liked it. :)

well fist of all your putting infornation out there that's not easily
accesable so it's more practlicle for people who have a genuin interest and
curiosity about the music to learn about Detroit techno.
Your also archiving an important part of history in a convieniant package
for future refrence.

certain aspects of that can be rewarding but it's mostly a hastle and very
time consuming.

When I interviewed larkin in 96? he mentioned it too.
He's also mentioned it in other interviews. He and his
brother have since moved to California. They had a
weekly going on that was regularly posted to the list.
If you've ever seen Kenny,Kelvin(his brother), and
Deason together...you'll know it's not a far stretch

That's the way it has always been in the world of DJs and dance music -
everyone wants that tune/record that nobody else has. I wouldn't expect
this list to be any different.

True - it sometimes is an era that isn't easily discovered but it's not
impossible - do the homework and you can learn about it. If it's handed to
you on a platter then what's the point? I think it's more rewarding to
teach myself by reading books, listening to DJ sets, randomly listening to

In my previous post the word "elitist" was referring to the collector types
who are not very forthcoming about information on
rare and
limited releases.
I was suggesting something like a DVD archive for listing singles, promos,
remixes, un-released tracks, ect. from well known
to the lesser know Detroit artist and labels.
When it comes to techno there seems to be a gray area with records falling
into obscurity especially from the very late 80's to
early 90's.
To give you example sometimes when going through old dance music magazines
like Art Payne's column in Streetsounds magazine I'll see a review of a
record that I never
knew existed or maybe mention of a short lived Detroit techno label.

Lets take this review by Josh Tearnan, The Vibe Magazine:

Images - "The Keys to Heaven/" It's Just a Groove" (Siren Records)

With the people producing this record, it's bound to be big Santonio (of
Resses & Santonio fame) Art Forest (remixer of Inner City), and Brian Hall.
The A side, featuring vocals by Mischivous, has three mixes. The best is
the
club mix; it's classic inner city style, complete with backtracked beats
and
pumpin' keyboards. There are even samples from Martin Luther King's famous
speech.
The B side is also a prime cut. The only problem with this record is
deciding which cut is better.

Just playing the devil's advocate - I think it's a funny line and a hot

Amen to that.

Im also a little puzzled that no one has mentioned the
attention that this movie is bringing to the city. Yeah,
people are crying that it makes the city look like a "prison."
But as someone who has seen the film, I thought Detroit
looked like Detroit, and it was actually kind of cool sitting
in a major theater going, "Wow, I know where that is..."
And the fact that he has said in interviews that his purpose
in the movie was to show the world the real Detroit
transcends whatever his opinion on techno is.

maybe "Dancing in the Streets"? Any others?

2002-11-11 Thread logic7
He's been doing some production since "The Marshall Mathers LP". Dre is
usually behind the stuff that hits the radio (he's the "executive" producer
on the 3 albums Em did on Aftermath). "The Slim Shady LP" was produced
almost entirely by The Bass Brothers, with the exception of the radio cuts.
"The Eminem Show" has a lot more of his own production on it. I'm not sure
who produced Em's first album, "Infinite", but I think I remember hearing
that it was The Bass Brothers.

Actually he's writing some of his own stuff now. The movie gives him credit
for original music or score or something like that.

Anyway, I liked the movie and I agree with the movie critics it's the 2000's
version of Purple Rain. I didn't read this reference until after I saw the
movie but during the whole movie my girlfriend and I were saying that it
reminds us of purple rain.

I have an interview CD from Universal Music and he elaborates and says he
never liked techno, and remembers it all over Detroit radio, etc, so he
knows what he's talking about. He says it's his personal taste - not that
he's 'anti-techno' just that he never got into it.
It's a shame he can't differentiate Moby from Mills, but...
Have to give Eminem props for his production, his beats on that soundtrack

(313) Fw: Perspects Review Copies *AMENDED*

2002-11-11 Thread Tom Robbins/Magic Feet
ARTIST: PERSPECTS
TITLE: THE THIRD AND FINAL REPORT
LABEL: INTERDIMENSIONAL
TRANSMISSIONS
FORMAT: 12" VINYL
RELEASE DATE: 13 JANUARY 2003

IT continues its journey into indivualistic and adventurous electronic
music, creating the standards of the future. IT 19 finds Ian Clark in his
debut appearance on Interdimensional Transmissions. Ian co-founded Le Car
and helped bring new obsessions to Detroit Electro, influencing all that
come after. After forming Perspects and releasing music on Ersatz Audio and
Clone as well his submission for Disco Nouveau, Ian finally goes solo and is
his own voice. The result? Devastation. Perspects' best record to date.
'The Third and Final Report' includes the soon to be classic 'Accumulators'.
Full Length & Rmx 12 due in 2003.

In his own words:

Air of Finality:
The rocker. Out of a menacing, restarting intro emerge goosestepping synths
and bullhorn voices to set the paranoid tone of the release. An analysis of
mass quiet panic set to sleazy, eighth-note punch & crunch.

Comfort Gained:
My current favourite. Sparse, eerie synths and claustrophobic vocals record
the final moments of a modern man as he decides to capitalize on the
acceptance of his fate.

Gimme Panic:
Just what it says - Doomsday disco that suggests a human stampede, and other
chaotic descents.

The Accumulators:
The popsong. The line: "we're accumulating" refers to both consumers losing
control and corpses piling up. Subtle differences in the two verses create a
cause/effect dialogue that supports this. You can dance to it too.

Statement concerning the Third and Final Report of Perspects:

In 'Desire and Efficiency' the warnings were there. It was the soundtrack to
our surrender to the uncertain velocities. The point where vigilance falls
victim to comfort and the surface suddenly seems more real.
Hoverculture was inevitable. Total seduction by surface. Songs became empty
signifiers efficiently packaged for consumption. Anaesthetic and
disassociative, it hadn't entirely worn off when the panic hit.
Now the powermad have seized control and are steering us into a crash. Now
we are taking hits to the fragile framework of finance and energy that
sustains us. Never have we been more aware of our mortality than right now.
This is why the Third and Final Report is necessary.

I.T. is a label that doesn't just release records, it releases milestones -
from the 'Visionary From Beyond' series that debuted I-F's 'Space Invaders'
to the world, to the early Ectomorph relics that still set the standard.
Coming soon from the label are full lengths from G.D Luxxe (IT 16) and
Ectomorph (IT 18).

Perspects: Shouldn't you be paying attention?
