RE: (313) books on techno: more brilliant than the sun
Simon Reynolds' Energy Flash is certainly thought-provoking, though it is UK-centered and I think it might antagonise a few 313ers with a few of its more controversial assertions. He has rather strange ideas about class and music. -Original Message- From: dave cronin [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, November 23, 2002 6:39 PM To: Ron; 313 Subject: Re: (313) books on techno: more brilliant than the sun absolutely crucial is Kodwo Eshun's "More Brilliant Than the Sun: Adventures In Sonic Fiction", a freaked-out exploration of the mutations and forms of "Black Atlantic Futurism" from Miles to Drexcya. the book reads like how Kool Keith might lecture if he were a professor in "late 20th century African American music." RE: (313) Somewhere to hear good sounds tonight in London......
A shame you didn't ask last night cos Silicon Scally (Carl Finlow) and Scape One played at Scand at the Fortress and a few London 313ers were in attendance. There is another Haywire at Bridge and Tunnel on Thursday with Magda and Mr Weatherall and it's free and then there's another one on the 6th with Wevvers, Tenniswood, Hopkins and Eon live, so you're spoilt for choice if you like electro - it's very healthy in London at the moment. -Original Message- From: Chris [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, November 23, 2002 5:41 PM To: Robert Taylor; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) Somewhere to hear good sounds tonight in London.. (313) Somethings Growing
Don't get too worried. Alex might like it tho... http://www.aeonflux.co.uk - and click TIMELINE on the menu bar. It's only got entries for the artists on the playlist, but it's something to play with if you get really bored, or you go out on the road, and forget your notepad (then again, you'd have to have a computer, so that makes the notepad kinda pointless).. Fabric is on tonight - lots of electro mayhem cos the Haywire Sessions is in Room 2 - Andy Weatherall, Radioactive Man live, Matt Carter and, best of all, Rick Hopkins, who's a killer electro DJ. You gotta check it out on that sound system. -Original Message- From: Chris [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Saturday, November 23, 2002 5:14 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Somewhere to hear good sounds tonight in London.. Re: (313) re: best decks
Sorry for replying a little late, but my computer was broke, and I am now reading the messages from a few days back. As anyone would expect from me.. I studied the way Derrick May synchronizes records... and it is very funny to see... Look at his DEMF performance on groovetech.com. He puts a record on, and adjust the pitch for about 5 seconds, and then he starts using his cross-fader so he actually syncs most records after 5 seconds without touching the record!! I wich I could do that... When I play disco, I aslo do it the way Jonny does... -> using the pitch for adjustment. I think it is the only way to mix non-electronic records Cheers, Maarten > You can *hear* whether a record is too fast or slow. You don't have to know > in advance. Also: cueing up is *faster* when you get used to not touching > the records. Try it. (313) 313'rs in Northwest North America
Hi, I just thought I'd put out a message to any Techno-minded folks living in the Northwest around Vancouver, Seattle and Portland to see if there was much life in the area. I'm originally from the 313 area and have been living in Vancouver for a couple years now and have been checking out the music scene around here for a bit (such as it as I can find). Anyway, there's a definite overabundance of commercial and west coast House in effect here and I would really like to find something Techno related going on... not that I don't love House, but I'm more a fan of the Chicago sound than what is generally the mode here. I do know about DJ Noah's show on CITR, but other than that I don't see much evidence of a Techno community, except that when bigger Techno DJs come through the venues are packed. Vancouver seems kind of cliquey, and I haven't had a lot of time to scope out Seattle or Portland, so I'm sure I'm not completely clued in. So, I'd be interested in hearing from any 313 list members who live in Oregon, Washington, or British Columbia about their experiences here and who might be able to point this expat Detroit boy toward some worthwhile happenings, t'would be much appreciated. And if there are any people who I've lost touch with back in Michigan or wherever who feel like saying hi, feel free to drop a line any time. Thanks, Josh
