(313) 2002 Records
Speaking of good records, Haven't heard anyone mention Thomas Brinkman's Max Ernst 11 yet, the track with the Kraftwerk sample is pretty sweet. Also there are some tracks from the Force Trax Digital Disco compilation that are really doing it for me right now. /dave

*Well, you could start with Casa - Purpose Maker - AX-011. But really a lot of Mills material around that time had a Latin feel. For less stylized Latin-like techno, check out the Sonido Denso label of Spain - So Dens - which doesn't appear to have its own website. Instead go to: http://www.loudmusic.dk/records_labels.asp?function=letterletter=s and select So Dens. *People say Jamie Anderson's releases are quite Latin-inged - if you know Latin music at all, you'd be ambivalent about that at least. He has an LP: 'Blue Music' (NRK) Also the 'Abstract Latinism' series of 12s (Artform) Don't forget 'Techno Por Favor' - Infiniti on the 'Techno 2': The Next Generation, (10 Records). On the whole however, I feel it's too self-restricting to limit oneself to a phrase like 'Latin/Salsa techno'. Nowadays, the whole range of 'Latin' be it house, or even traditional Salsa styles, will have elements of techno within them which weren't there maybe even 5 years ago. But are now, because each has learned from the other. Not forgetting Andrew McLauchlan's Love Story which came out in 1999 and has been caned by every DJ since The trouble, Mills aside, is that IMO a lot of the latin-influenced techno that came out after that just concentrated on getting some latino-style rhythms and sample presets and then programming them in that style, without any soul whatsoever. See Adam Beyer and others for examples. I played around with a lot of it for around a year or so without any success, before dipping into the housier side of things and finding far more diversity. Check Osunlade for example. - Original Message - From: Odeluga, Ken [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Slow_me [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Org 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Wednesday, January 08, 2003 8:11 AM Subject: RE: (313) recomended latin/salsa techno *Well, you could start with Casa - Purpose Maker - AX-011. Re: (313) recomended latin/salsa techno
How about Kim Bilir's 'Feelin?' Not particulary Latin in a melodic sense, but to my ear it has that really dense syncopated percussion and whistles sound like those massive drum bands from South America (Brazil perhaps?) Damn fine record anyhow Dan Not forgetting Andrew McLauchlan's Love Story which came out in 1999 and has been caned by every DJ since The trouble, Mills aside, is that IMO a lot of the latin-influenced techno that came out after that just concentrated on getting some latino-style rhythms and sample presets and then programming them in that style, without any soul whatsoever. Damn fine record anyhow Yeah.. I second Dan and Toby.. but the real latin monsters are made by sven van hees in the early 90´s: Global Cuts 01 (piano power - remy sven), Global Cuts 15 (planet jupiter), Global Cuts 33 (psychedelic bellydance). This is the type of record you really want! also check: Basement Jaxx - Samba Magic Basement Jaxx - Eo Nao It doesn´t get any better than that, does it? Cheers, Maarten
