(313) Moodyman question

2003-02-05 Thread Arne Weinberg
hello dear list members...

This might be a silly question for some trainspotters out there and I don't
know if this was already asked before:

I'm interested into that short piece of music that Moodyman has in his intro
and outro of the B-side of KDJ 007 (Moodymann-The city/Detroit---Don't be
misled) that comes just in for a moment together with those street sound
samples...
It sounds like an old Mo' Town song.

Does anybody which artist made this track and how it is called?

Many thanks in advance,

Arne

RE: (313) Deep Sea Dweller - Shockwave

2003-02-05 Thread Pryor, Ryan N
Submerge had 3 Drexciya releases available on colored vinyl, but you had to
visit them in person to get a copy (sorta like the SID records), or order
from www.clone.nl (I'm sure they sold out by now). They were pressed up
shortly after the passing of James Stinson. There were 3 released on marbled
vinyl: Bubble Metropolis, Deap Sea Dweller, and Molecular Enhancement. I was
told there were only 50 copies of each being released on colored. And as far
as I now they are sold out. In regards to their value, I sold 2 copies for
$165 to someone in Europe. Most people I talked with weren't even aware
these existed.

Re: (313) what's on in L.A. ?

2003-02-05 Thread g
depends a lot where you're going to be... saying you'll be in LA is like
saying you'll be in rhode island. ;)

shopping... you might as well hit Melrose. there are several (questionable)
record stores along with a lot of shopping. actually it will probably
remind you some of uptown, only better. i'm talking about melrose roughly
between fairfax and la brea.

there's a solid record store in los feliz called vinyl fetish. it's at 1750
N Vermont ave. if you get out that far east, there's also some interesting
shopping in silver lake.

if you're closer to the west side, there's a decent record store in west LA
called higher source. it's at 1544 Purdue ave, just off santa monica blvd,
just west of the 405. around the corner is West LA Music, a very nice
equipment store. and if you've never been to the 3rd St. Promenade in santa
monica that's worth doing, just for general shopping.

as far as clubs on those nights of the week the only thing i can comfortably
recommend is Sugar in santa monica on tuesday night.
http://www.clubsugar.com/. tuesday is the moontribe night, so you get
something like house and desert breaks, whatever the hell that is. but
actually it's a very reliably fun night, the crowd is unpretentious and just
there to have fun, the music often isn't bad, and it's $2 to get in. it's
actually a very nice club as well... small, well done.

Not gonna believe this, but the MEMF is off!
The director pulled it because of some undisclosed issues with not securing
sponsorship this year and a venue for the finale (pssst Carol, wanna
festival, sun, talent, politics included free? ;) ).
Alton will still play Honkytonks on 14 but alas no workshops. Everyone
better come and catch one of the world's most underrated soulful house DJs.
Alton's new mix-CD is House Proud and is out through Distance. Essentially
it's a label comp. Class, class, class!

He released a couple of records on Relief in the 90's most of them where in
Relief janking style techno but there is an EP called 'Back To The
Beginning' which is a beautifull EP, a bit like the one you described below
(i think, have not heard the Netherlands EP). Sounds like a mix between
Rhythm is Rhythm and Mr. Fingers

(313) Joe Louis - Netherlands EP (Basement 282)

2003-02-05 Thread Andrew
Hello,

I've had this record for years now, and it occurred to me to ask if anyone
here had it, or had heard it? It's an amazing Detroit-style techno record,
but it's on this London label, and it seems to be from Joe Louis from
Chicago (it says on the label ''Licensed from Target Records''). I just
thought he was more well-known for his Relief releases, or music in that
style - does anyone know if he's done stuff that's as good as this EP? Or in
the same kind of style?

Thanks,
Andrew

I see what you mean, and I agree that there's a case for functional records.
I love working a bonus beats track alongside a more melodic/leftfield one,
or even two beats, eq-ing and crossing them over. I guess what I've noticed
(like a lot of people) is that when those records become the majority, and
then when the artists involved get major kudos in the press (naming no
names!) it gets right up my nose.

So many times, when reading reviews etc., I see a tune and think ''I'll go
and find that'', only to be deeply disappointed - it's Just Another Record.
This applies to all different genres, but then, reviews *are* subjective,
aren't they? I'm not complaining (oh, alright, I am) but it's interesting to
 see what other people think.

Indeed. At 37 I now belong to that (age) group of people
who when I was a teenager I used to say they should stay
at home and let us have some (shallow) fun.

Oh, I go clubbing because I want to dance to music
I'm not interested in, and also it's so easy to score
with all them tasty & fit young guys off their tits.

Yes I've been to clubs but what does that supposed to prove?
Look what club culture has become, the type of people who go out
to clubs.
They are not going there to listen to music, especially interest, new
electronic music, some of the most shallow people go to dance
clubs.
It's too bad you cant throw a rave in a huge dark abandon
warehouse anymore, at least that would be fun.

Music is a form of human social expression through sound, when
you
hear a sound your brain processes the signal from your ears and
this triggers an emotional response.

Of course all of this is considered off topic so I'll just leave it at that,
my point was to a good dj there is no such thing as a bad record, I
challenge people to randomly buy used 12" you find at the discount
rack (there are a lot of second hand music stores that sell old dance
12" for .50 or $1.00) and try incorporating that into a dj set with
the techno you have in your crates and see what type of results you come up
with.
