Nope. My moms used to work for a studio, and I have all sorts of old vinyl

I really enjoyed it and, prior to getting back online, all I heard were
good
reports. Everyone enjoyed hearing the old hip-hop.
I think you have to take into account the context. I think as techno
fans/followers/purists/etc you have to take into account that you're a
minority at the festival. How many people there have any Axis records at
home?
He's playing to a large number of people in the main arena who have no idea
what 'techno' is. They may be kids who listen to 50 Cent in their rides,
rave to Tiesto, or their parents and came out of curiousity, or people who
know The Wizard, not Jeff Mills. That's not a good or bad thing, it's just
the reality. It's a challenge.
Of course it's going to be an 'intro to Jeff Mills 2003' of sorts. You're
just hearing one side of Jeff Mills, and if you go to Sonar, say, you'll
hear another side and another side again in a club. I think his approach
was
perfect.
It was hard to recreate the momentum after the mixer went, but I think he
did well.

I've only seen Mills once before Movement 03 and I was a bit
disappointed in his choice of sets - it seemed almost like he was doing
a 'best of/hits' set hopping around different types of music but not
necessarily in a manner that flowed well. I know it's not the best thing
to go into a performance hoping for something, but I was hoping he'd
play a wicked, bangin' set and he didn't.

Like I said before I think he played a lot of good tunes and I liked
watching him with the turntables (there were 3, right?). I didn't mind
that he did cut-overs because some of that worked. What kinda sucked
with that was some of the cut-over points he chose cut out verses or
measures of the song that would have worked left it feeling 'short' -
like he stopped too soon and it wasn't pleasant/cool. There were a few
wrecks on the decks, but maybe he was a bit frazzled from those early
equipment problems? Like he got thrown off? I dunno.

I have more stuff to put up and will do that soon - just a bit tired
from getting back home tonight from Detroit after being without a
computer since Friday! Hmmm, speaking of computers... Did anyone else
notice how crappy the internet access was @ the Sony booth? I mean, it

I actually have some MP3 samples of the Definitive release of that on my
web site...

http://www.skooch.com/

The links are:
Original Mix -
http://www.skooch.com/sounds/Cantina%20-%20Mos%20Eidley%20-%20Original.mp3
Barada Mix -
http://www.skooch.com/sounds/Cantina%20-%20Mos%20Eidley%20-%20Barada%20Rmx.m
p3
Klaatu Mix -
http://www.skooch.com/sounds/Cantina%20-%20Mos%20Eidley%20-%20Klaatu%20Rmx.m
p3

These are from the Definitive Cantina Band Mos Eidley Medley release.

If it's not these then it's probably one of the other ones.

The magazine you're looking for is Straight no chaser, and it's

RE: (313) amp fiddler on Still Music

2003-06-10 Thread Matthew MacQueen
Speaking of Amp Fiddler keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming release on
new label run out of Chicago called STILL MUSIC.

The debut will be a cool deep house affiar called The Sugar EP by jazzy
French house guys Patchworks, and features an Amp Fiddler remix of
the title track! Really nice if you like that whole deep detroit house
sound, but the production is a bit cleaner and has a more overt use of
jazz instruments and sounds. A class production that will appeal to fans
of deeper house like kdj, harmonie park, elevate, deepside / st.
germain, glasgow underground, neroli, etc.

Peace,
Matt MacQueen

its straight no chaser and they sell it at borders, barnes and
nobles, etc. it used to be about $8, now its about $12 per issue.
and really, its still worth every penny since it doesnt come out
all that often. i love it, its probably my favorite magazine. its
like the wire for good ethnic and electronic music.

Do you mean Straight no Chaser?

Your local Borders carries most every music mag.

(313) speaking of shake - new Frictional EP

2003-06-10 Thread Matthew MacQueen
Speaking of Shake...

Check out his excellent new Convalesce EP on Frictional. A 2-tracker
with a long gorgeous track on both sides:

- Lay Back (in the Cut) is a smoother instrumental electronic
instrumental hip-hop tempo affair.. if you remember his OUTSTANDING
contribution to the 11 Phases compilation on Sublime a few years back,
this is in a similar mood/style... contemplative, deep and gorgeous.

- ...Like A Dream (soundhack mix). Originally this track came out on
his awesome Songs for my Mother EP on Frictional. The Soundhack remix
tightens it up a notch to creates a funky, jerkey, slighty more uptempo
feeling techno soul gem... that plugs along and begs to be mixed with
techno, house or broken up choppy stuff. Really nice! I love the
original too but let me say this version is a lot easier to slip in and
out of a hotmix. :)

Peace,
Matt MacQueen

I think you mean Straight No Chaser and they have it upstairs at
Prairie Lights... it's a great jazz-oriented magazine. Get a copy and
read it and then I'll loan you my jazz vinyl to check out ;-)
