(313) Tuesday evening: Ann Arbor: Good Nite Gracies

2003-07-22 Thread Rob Theakston

Hi everyone.

I'm having a small relaxed birthday party at Goodnite Gracies (301 W. Huron)
Ann Arbor tomorrow night (tuesday) from 10-2am. Mainly for those who couldn't
make it to one of the most intense and hedonistic parties in Detroit
history([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Saturday night.

That and I want to have a party where I can remember things that happened.

There's no cover and some damn good martinis.

Ryan Elliott will be spinning along with special mystery guests. If you haven't
heard him yet, you should. He's a damn fine talent who is one of many leading
the charge as one Detroit's finest up and coming DJs.

Drew Maddox and myself will be opening with a small downtempo set early on in
the night.

Hope to see you guys there.

Osbourne/Isolee (Spectral) - Daylight. I'm not usually one for Ghostly
International but this is ace. Remember that not somewhat discredited term,
'intelligent techno'? This made me think of that. Smoothly produced and
enough of a straddle between techno and deep house to please both camps.

(I hope it gets played, many djs imo are still bizarrely dipping into what
seems to me the majority of releases which are weaker, from the areas we
like - rather than hunting down subtler things like this. (of course this is
my subjective opinion)

(313) new stuff

2003-07-22 Thread alex . bond
I got a hot one.

M>O>S001, one track by Aroy Dee - in vein of Aroy/M>O>S stuff - wicked
spacey/trancey club material
other side, a hot stripped down techno track from Peel Seamus & Aroy Dee.
almost 'jacking' deep techno material.
very very nice. well worth picking up if you're digging that M>O>S sound,
which I am.

otherwise, not finding much at the minute that's new - can anyone else
recommend anything?

while I'm at it, I have a q. which has been bugging me big time for the
last week or so.
That 'kdj' one sided release on Moods & Grooves - the first, slower track.
What's the sample? It's a famous track, but I can't think of what it is and
its really bugging me because I either have the record or know it.
argh.

Thanks.

Alex

2003-07-22 Thread Martin
Morning 313ers,

Just got 3 cds and a load of articles from Greg this morning, some
absolutely top stuff including interviews from back in the day (82-84). It
sounds like a couple of the mixes come from tapes so I'll spend a little
time "fixing" the sound before I make them available but we've been bouncing
around the studio to them all morning.

I've just got some stuff to check with Greg first but they should be
available next week...

I think it is "Stan Ivory & His Magnificent Orchestra - Stans Theme" wich is
on that Ashley Beedle compilation on Strut. You can listen to that sample on

I saw the date of www.discogs.com before of my post but I remember a post by

first track was Italian Ecstasy. I have a copy of this post

The singer in Fingers Inc, and Rhythm Controll was Chuck Roberts

He seems to enjoy releasing the odd track on Tresor Comilations and the
Logistic Post Office pack. Other than that he tosses out the odd remix for
us to hunt down. About a year ago I saw something on the Tresor Web site
about a single of his they were going to relase called Tiny Robot or maybe
it was Ghost...anyway it hasn't happened yet that I've seen, not that I gave
up hope though.

On a related note I just tracked down a copy of His Vampirella

Hi,

did anyone else notice that "dwele - money doesn´t mean a thing" and "dj

just sample Dj Marky?

I find the new Dwele album a bit dissapointing though.

2003-07-22 Thread James Hurlbut
Thanks, I'll check it out. Some of Shannon Harris' stuff I've heard on DHP
is a little too smooth for me. Its a fine line I guess. The Rich Medina
track I was thinking of is "American Poem", in which he is yelling "I want
to hear an American Poem, Some improper english s--t ... a joe hill legend
... " and goes off denouncing racism and oppression in American culture.
Much more powerful than other tracks of his that I've heard which haven't
hit me as hard.

if you like those you might want to give shannon harris' 'urbanicity'

(313) dwele

2003-07-22 Thread Al Jones

Following from recent mail:
I can't answer the sample question, but I too was disappointed by Dwele.
I haven't heard the album, but I heard a 15 minute feature on Peterson's
worldwide (on British airways as a matter of fact).

He (Dwele) said that he wrote the album as a soundtrack for making babies...
All the songs were very smooth late-night jazzual Peterson style - no edge
to them
It seems that the collaboration with Recloose was lined up by Carl Craig,
but wasn't particularly reflective of his style.

Finally he gave props to 50 Cent, says it all really

Hmm, well I don't know what you were expecting. I saw him live at the Jazz
Cafe here in London the other week and he was wicked, just proper soul music
by a young man. Maybe you should listen to his LP before slagging him off on
a public forum - based on a 15-minute slot on GP's show! So he likes Fiddy,
so what?

Get the LP then decide,

Peace,

Andrew

PS. While you're at it get Kindred's LP on Hidden Beach, I've mentioned it
before but their songs are really special.

2003-07-22 Thread Allday, Andrew
agreed andrew...the album may not be as good as expected but it has it's
moments.."the truth" for one...like you say it's proper soul music.
for the real deal try getting hold of the bootleg of his unreleased
album.i forget the title but it's well worth checking.

RE: (313) What is Daniel Bell up to?

2003-07-22 Thread Erin Berg (WPL)
IMO Fukhouse has consistent quality shows. Pretty much always worth going
to and I haven't missed one in about a year. I mean the line-up of the last
two says it all...Matthew Dear, Deadbeat, Pantone for the Avant-Mutek, Adam
Beyer. The Avant-Mutek show was totally fantastic...I specifically thought
that Pantone was one of the funkiest things I had heard in a long
time...Matthew Dear I find a bit uneven, sometimes he's pretty decent, other
times I'm bored out of my tree.

Plus they support a ton of local Toronto DJ talent, who are consistently top
quality, such as AMtrak. System Soundbar is one of my favourite venues and I
find the soundsystem to be pretty damn fine - which of course is a major
factor in heading out to see anyone. There's nothing worse than a fantastic
talent coming to town and knowing that they're about to head to a venue that
can't support their sound. It makes me sick with anxiety while I purchase my
ticket.

I would totally suggest to anyone that if they can make it to Toronto for a
Fukhouse party that they do so. You won't be disappointed!

According to the liner notes on LK, the guitar is by a session guitarist,
which would lead me to believe that it is original and dwele sampled it..

Hi,

did anyone else notice that "dwele - money doesn´t mean a thing" and "dj
marky - lk" use the same samples? Wich song do they sample? Or did Dwele
just sample Dj Marky?

I find the new Dwele album a bit dissapointing though.

Osbourne/Isolee (Spectral) - Daylight. I'm not usually one for Ghostly
International but this is ace. Remember that not somewhat discredited term,
'intelligent techno'? This made me think of that. Smoothly produced and
enough of a straddle between techno and deep house to please both camps.

(I hope it gets played, many djs imo are still bizarrely dipping into what
seems to me the majority of releases which are weaker, from the areas we
like - rather than hunting down subtler things like this. (of course this is
my subjective opinion)

On this note, it should be mentioned that this is in an intimate venue, and
that the Outlet Collective's DJ's will turn it out in their own right, as
they always do. Also, please note it is ticket only. This is not just a
promotional ploy. People will not be allowed to pay at the door, even if the
party does not fill to capacity - something to do with the venue. Who knows,
they may find a way around this, but at this time there is absolutely no
guarantee of that. At any rate, this is not one to sleep on because the
venue is not huge, the interest is high and the ticket is cheap. These guys
took a huge chance on this gig, so please come support. Mr. Bell has not
graced this island that often in recent years, so you know it's your best
shot to see him soon.

Also, those who might think of seeing Francois K instead, I agree this is a
gutting choice, but take note that August 2nd is the beginning of his new
bi-monthly Deep Space residency at Plastic People. You will get to see him
again much sooner than DBX, and this is cheaper!

(313) Technics 1200s question

2003-07-22 Thread Dennis DeSantis

Hi folks,

I'm no DJ, so this is probably a dumb question for most of you.
I'm wondering if it's possible/easy to modify the Technics 1200 to have
a power supply that's switchable between US and European voltages?
There doesn't appear to be a handy switch for it the way there is on
lots of computer gear.

Anyone done this?

Thanks,

RE: (313) Technics 1200s question

2003-07-22 Thread Dennis Donohue
That's not entirely true. I used to own a pair of Technics 1200s that were
brought over from Germany, and the PSU on that model could handle 110v-120v
220v-240v and 50hz-60hz. I didn't have to do anything except change the
plug.

I see that all of the ones being sold in the UK and Germany advertise the
same sort of power supply, but I don't know if the ones sold in the US have
the same PSU. It's very likely that it will say the power supply properties
where the power cable exits the molded plastic. If it can handle 110v-120v
220v-240v and 50hz-60hz, then you'll only need to change the type of plug :)

Re: (313) What is Daniel Bell up to?

2003-07-22 Thread David Powers
I don't know what he is up to for new original work, but i see TONS of remix
work by him all the time (and recent too) in the record store. For instance a
nice remix of Akufen "My Way".

Also, he is playing at Smart Bar in Chicago Thursday, anyone in town going to
that??? I need to meet some headz if there are even any left any more.

He is one of those musical artists which i am obssessed about but most of
his releases are from the nineties.
What is he up to these days? Is he working on some new material?
Anyone have some insider information? I would love to hear what direction
his music has gone in.

thanks

I think you can buy that power source part along with voltage selector at
www.1200s.com (in the electrical parts). You can practically build your
own table from this site.

Yeah I too have these (bought in the US)I think they're the
'international' model. All you need to do is swap the plug and switch the
voltage selector located under the platter.

(313) question/help re: questionable program/possible virus (ot)

2003-07-22 Thread andrewduke
(apologies for crossposting)

Dear listmembers:

I always scan attachments for viruses before I open
them and yet have just encountered a problem I can't
seem to solve.

A friend emailed me a document entitled
1stpressrelease.pdf.pif

When i downloaded it to my desktop, it showed up not as
a document, but as a shortcut with the MSDOS icon.
When I tried to open it up in the newest version of
Adobe Acrobat, it wouldn't work, so I threw it in the
recylce bin and then emptied the bin (and emailed my
friend who sent me the attachment). I thought all was
well, but I've just found that there is now a program
in my startup called befy.exe; i have scanned this file
about ten times and my updated norton antivirus doesn't
say it is a virus, but there doesn't seem to be any way
I can delete this file; a properties query tells me
that it is an application. I'm quite anxious because I
have gigs here in Halifax tomorrow and Friday nights
and then I leave for a mini-tour on Tuesday, so I
definitely want to get this application off my computer
and make sure everything is A-OK. Any help would be
super appreciated. Thank you. Andrew Duke

*.pdf.pif is most likely a virus.

Re: (313) dwele

2003-07-22 Thread Jason Hogans
he's a pretty decent guy. we both started around the same time & sorta
shared equipment once or twice. his first joint was basically a demo tape
called rize. it got bootlegged oodles of times & an urban legend was born.
if my ears are to be the judge, he's more comfy in the studio than on the
stage. he's done some utterly amazing ish behind the boards, but seems a
little bit unsure live. i'm sure he'll be alright in time though. i wouldn't
mind making a baby or two to his stuff;-)>>>

ditto i like both, too. pepe's mix is so darned chunky & delicious (sounds
like i'm describing chili, not music). carl's mix has a nice build & overall
vibe.>>>
