There was going to be a Carl Craig remix of a track, not sure
 what happened!
It's a big seller here, the Verve comp. The guys behind it are
 very clued
up. The Jaffa mix of Black Is The Colour... is rather nice. There
 is also a
Metro Area remix of something (my copy is under all my drafts,
 sorry!).
Last time the Masters At Work remix of See Line Woman was a big club
favourite among house DJs.

and mj cole's rmx of carmen mcrae was pretty sweet as well. i saw
the new one at the record store i work at today, but i didnt give
it all a listen. i work again tomorrow so ill check out that metro
area joint. thats really the one im excited about. too bad the c2
mix didnt show up, hes been killing rmxes left and right this year.

(313) Mr Fiddler

2003-08-31 Thread Cyclone Wehner
Being a huge Amp Fiddler fan, I tracked down the Mr Fiddler album on
Elektra, With Respect, from 1990 and it's really cool!
This is a band project, rather than a solo outing.
Unlike a lot of very early 90s RB (like Keith Sweat) it has not dated at
all and I think that's down to the organicism in the production. It
pre-empts one of my favourite groups, Solo, part of Flyte Tyme as well as
the neo-soul of D'Angelo. At points it reminds me of Aaron Hall too, he was
a great singer! It's got a bit of roughness to it.
It's cool to see a vocal credit by Brian McKnight on So You Wanna Be A
Gangster. ;) My absolute fave cut is the brilliantly entitled Starvin' Like
Marvin, a really soulful swinging ballad which I have played non-stop for
the last hour. It's really too bad Warner did not do anything with this, but
personally I think the label has been long left behind by the likes of
Arista when it comes to the urban market and this record may have been too
far ahead of its time.

Anyone heard the Sea The Cake remix Carl did?

Yep. It's good! It sound a bit weird the first time you hear it, through
about the 2-3 minute mark, but then it settles into typical C2 territory,
but on repeated listens the beginning fits pretty well. The Glass EP is far
better than the album it supports. It also includes a Streolab remix called
The Tea Cake which is pretty cool. The only track I really like on the
album is the cover of Sound Vision (also a cool video), but the whole EP
is good, and probably the most electronic thing they've done to date. The
album is very overproduced in a bad way, and even a bit flakey. The vocals
have this airyness to them that doesn't compliment Sam Prekop's voice in the
least. I was pretty dissapointed by it, given that they're my favorite band
band, but again, the EP was a good recovery!

I love that Beyonce record! It sounds like a house record I know but I can't
think what, maybe something uses the same sample, it's the horns. A guy
called Rich Harrison produced it. He's one to watch.

I dug most of his set, from classic Jacko to Osunlade, the Paperclip People
track the one on Los Hermanos. Jaguar always goes down well even though
I was surprised he played it, the Beyonce record is a good pop record as
well. Didn't really like the way he ended the set but that's a minor
really, overall it was something different very enjoyable.

p.s Even I spotted Shari Vari, maybe I can make it as a spotter after all!

nothing is more boring than a dj that only plays brokenbeat.
in my opinion it works best when combined with other genre's, so it can
enhance the deepness of the house tracks, or the pure energy of the techno
tracks.

I also agree that broken beat should be a compliment to the set you play.
Especially eclectic, downtempo more soulful stuff and some soul techno sets.
Gilles Peterson, Recloose, Domu, Bugz in the Attic, Rainer Truby (tho more

kenny cranks out anthemic sounding tunes, which is great and i

more abstract and less obvious. you have to work to find his

I agree about Titonton... skills! and the confidence to do lots of
cut-n-scratch stuff too (if you like Claude Young, it's way more
towards that style than a smoother longer blending affair, by
comparison). He can really get aggressive in the mix with is a sight
to see, and really works up a crowd reaction.

I also agree w/ those who say a set of 100% broken-beat type of stuff
is tedious and like to see it used (like any good mix) to compliment
and in some cases contradict the things it's dropped in/around it
(whether the other elements are house or techno -- or both -- I like
the combination). I've never seen Dego DJ yet, but in all the mixes
I've heard from him online, almost all of them have a nice variety of
non-broken type tracks too.

I saw Orrin Walters DJ at that (now legendary) Planet E DEMF afterparty
a few years back... I was already a fan of many of his productions,
(esp. Neon Phusion) but this was my first time seeing him at a DJ.
Can't remember his mixing style per se, but the tracks were all ace,
smooth spacey/techno-ey and Co-Op style sounds... I lost it when he
mixed into Timeless Motion at full volume that gurgling bassline just
ate up the room. He was way upstaris in that space and not a ton of
people up there to hear him and it was a shame, because he laid down
some gorgeous jaw-dropping tracks. All bathed in this weird blue light
up there, very memorable.

They were both put out by Motown Records orginally.

The first one was the precursor to to the I Have a Dream and recorded in
Detroit at Cobo I believe. The speech was preceded by the great march of
freedom down Woodward. This is the verision featured on TP's Blackwater
remix. The record is called The Great March to Freedom.

The second is the more famous speech at Washington DC, which I'm sure most
of you have heard by now. This one is called The Great March on
Washington

I hope this helps. I could go into further detail on the history of the
recordings, if you would like.

Re: (313) [OT] best broken beats dj ?

2003-08-31 Thread dan

'fraid I totally disagree

My experience of hearing broken beat played out is a bit limited, but
what I've really enjoyed about hearing a set of 100% broken beats (if
such a thing is possible) is that the DJs can really get into a
groove with some continuity. The result is a special, and in my
experience v. rare, dancefloor experience when everyone is dancing
as one, i.e. everyone is locked into the same holy groove,
operating on some kind of higher plane (?). In this state no one
cares about when the next bid drop or breakdown is coming, it's
more like you could just dance to the beat forever, time seems to
stop in fact.

In case any of you were wondering, I'm quite sober at the moment,
it's just an experience I find very difficult to describe in words
without spewing pseudo-mystic gobshite. If any of the London list
members went to Speed at the Mars Bar in its early days then you
may hopefully have some idea of what I'm on about. I guess there's
some kind collective consciousness thing going on.

It also depends on the skills of the DJ, but there is definitely
something about broken beat that encourages this kind of vibe. Given
my DB comparison made above, maybe it's a breakbeat thing? Also, the
broken beat production scene seems to have come of age, in that
there's enough intricate material to play that kind of set.

Anyone else?

I'm looking for good broken beat dj's
and heard some producers spin but he they ain't called producers for nothing

So my question is :

what is the best broken beat dj for you and why ?

nothing is more boring than a dj that only plays brokenbeat.
in my opinion it works best when combined with other genre's, so it
can enhance the deepness of the house tracks, or the pure energy of
the techno tracks.

i think titonton does that, and so do domu and recloose.
there's a nice titonton mix up on betalounge [date: 01/25/01]

another dj i often see referred to as an excellent dj is charlie
dark, he's got a mix up on betalounge aswell [date: 10/13/01]
haven't heard it myself though.

the best resource for brokenbeat audio is probably
http://www.nuwaveradio.co.uk

you'll find some somatik mixes there aswell.
