This seems to be a very common misapprehension and I've never quite worked
out why - I'd challenge you to find any Surgeon tracks that sound like Mills
at all on anything but the most cursory of listens. In fact, when almost
every other european techno producer was churning out PurposeMaker by
numbers a few years back, he was one of the very few producing interesting,
innovative and musical material.

(313) new records

2003-10-29 Thread alex . bond
so, I seem to be struggling to find new records that are from labels/people
I didn't already know about at the minute.
it seems to be ages since I bought something new I'd never heard of.

I did get this, which was new to me.

Antidis - Star you star me (Freestyle Man/Common Factor mixes) - Moodmusic

and of course there's excellent new releases from delsin, iridite and
emoticon/headspace - but we all know those right?

so, come on folks, have you had anything new thats good and fancy sharing?

Alex

well, you might guess I'm a little bored today, but I was interested to
read this thread on little detroit.net

seems a lot of distributors are going under huh?
I just thought I'd chip in to say that the following are excellent people
and would be an excellent first point of contact if anyones looking.

so, there's a huge gap in the market for a 'deep' techno distributor eh?
also of course is baked goods, rushhour and black hole too.

minto and i were talking a little bit about why music business seems so
lackluster lately the other day. not really thinking too much about it, but
my feeling is that it has a lot to do with world politics, the general
climate of life in usa europe past few years. is that being too
reductive/simplistic and looking for too much meaning where there is little?
cus i kinda think its true. but maybe i just pay too much attention to the
news etc. but it's kinda hard to get in the party spirit and lose yourself
in music when jobs are few and far between and you have these idiots in
charge spinning your place of residence (and those of others) into a
ditch...etc etc. a lot of worries and disillusionment and lack of direction
clouding things..ahhh well. i'm sure there's lots of factors...of course
techno and house were born in the reagan era, but still, i think there is a
much more distinct morose feeling these days..after all the 80's were still
partytime..or is it just me? :P i'm not really THAT old so i'd be curious to

definitely!!! passionate people who work themselves to exhaustion...huge
potential...wonderful, wonderful people.

so, there's a huge gap in the market for a 'deep' techno distributor eh?

well cant be that huge, since there's not much deep techno...right?

also of course is baked goods, rushhour and black hole too.

i dont mean anything personal, they may have their reasons, but i'd say
avoid baked goods for the moment -- they're having trouble paying their
bills

rush hour is 2nd to none. i dont know what ability they have to keep picking
up more labels, but they are the only distributor who has always been
completely on the level in my experience, they are so passionate about music
without subscribing to any particular genre, they have a brilliant business
sense and a vision. they deserve so much more props than they will probably
ever get. just spent the weekend hanging out with the 2 founders of rh in
dallas and had such a great time, didnt even talk about music much -- more
down-to-earth real people you just dont find in this business.

blackhole is promising too -- helping to bring better coverage between euro
mainland and uk, why is this connection so difficult?

yeah. and you think you ramble alex! i'm not even hungover

I don't know. Someone else was telling me this too. It has improved ten
fold though recently. I presume thats down to Black Hole.e.g. I can get my
rushhour associated bits in Manchester now, where as I used to struggle.

so thats good.

yeah, I think that's fairly acurate. the 80s were very partytime even
with Ronny Wilson I don't recall Reagan in office.
It's definitely affecting the entire electronic - well, actually club
music. Seems like leftfield/listening type stuff is doing well.
There's small clubs here that, after years of running packed night every
weekend, suddenly close down. These are house clubs mind you.
Techno, on the other hand, seems to be starting to percolate up and it
hasn't been popular here for close to ten years. Maybe because most people
feel it's harder music for harder times? It's more personal because it's
abstract therefore you can stay in your space - unlike traditional house
which tends to be more extroverted.
I'm sure drugs had a factor in the 80s - cocaine was still going strong and
there was this new thing called exctasy.
Also, the music was new.
House, techno, etc. is now over 20 years old - there are people who don't
remember a day when this music didn't exist.
It's a cycle that we've never seen but has most probably occurred in the
world of rock'n'roll. However, I think you're correct to say that the
political and social climate isn't helping anything.

(313) new records dL partay in Big D

2003-10-29 Thread Minto George

alex is always askin for new vinyl...well I got some
for you mate! ;)

Dan Curtin Dead of Night vol. 2 Native
A return to the Dan Curtin releases we love. This one
has a POFF feel along with his classic META sound as
well. It includes a rabblerouser remix off the cut he
did on the previous Native Sampler comp. the big
dancefloor cut is In and out of Space dope use of
samples cutup and with a deep groove.

MOS Goddess/Razor MOS

This man's work is just bliss...Aroy Dee as he goes by
just drops deep record after deep record. I like this
one as much as the NWAQ record and it gives me a
feeling I used to have when I heard Transmat records
for the first time.

other choice records in the last few weeks:

Domu Volcov on Residual

UNAI 12 on Forcetracks (don't usually go for this
stuff but this guy does it well)

John Tejada Toiling of Idle Hands LP on Immigrant
(old stuff from John but I kinda dig it)

Recloose 12 on Rush Hour
Kemetic Just 12 on Rush Hour

can't wait to hear the new stuff on Headspace. reviews
soon.

And now for the review of the down low party in
Dallas. JT and I had an excellent time with Antal
Christiaan of Rush Hour this past wknd. The party went
off well and we pulled it off Mancuso stylo! The venue
was an old cathedral renovated into a 3 story loft.
Things like this don't happen in Dallas anymore so we
had to do it very low-key promoting the event word of
mouth since the city shuts down everything at 2am and
if you want to go late till 4, you have to have a late
night permit. We wanted to get out of the bar/club
environment and go back to a vibe of old times. party
started around 8pm with local djs of the MVM Records
camp and then a classics set by Luke Sardello of Icon.
next up was Rick Simpson of dL rockin us with an
electro and classic techno/house set everything from
Anthony Rother to Adonis and beyond. Antal came on
next and wowed us with a deep selection of UR's high
tech jazz to $tinkworx's italo mix of mischa...the
local folks were really getting down on the dancefloor
at this point and then Brett Johnson came on next with
his vocalist Dave Barker on the mic and guitar. He
performed his first LIVE PA which he will be taking on
the road soon to France and other places in Europe. It
was a great set with Dave's vocals and guitar licks
really highlighting the set along Brett's funky, weird
housetronics. After BJ, Christiaan came on and killed
it...droppin everything from Tres Demented to Liquid
Liquid, YMO, Yello and 69 to White Stripes and
Radiohead. An amazing eclectic set straight from gut.
Ill76 and Maetrik closed out the night around 5am with
sets of minimal german techno and classic Detroit
stuff. All in all a great party with a magical vibe.
wish you all could have been here to witness it. no
attitude plenty of room to dance and just smiling
faces all over the room. great night...hopefully we
can do it again!

Yeah, I always wondered this too.
you hear all these stories, especially after movement, of loads of parties
getting busted by the cops.

do you use un-licensed warehouses etc for the feel (would be nice!), or is
it that you can't get in to licensed places for some reason?

Seems like their server is down. The reason why audio.html did work with

(313) OT: Bleep43 Party Oct 18

2003-10-29 Thread Ken Odeluga
I know this is very late, but I wanted to post a few words about our
last event with Scape1, Plant43, and Rebel Intelligence. Sorry for the
silly gap - all I can say is that I've been stupidly busy.

If you showed your face, thanks very much for helping to pack the place
out again.

I must also thank on behalf of Bleep43 :

1. Kurt (Scape1) for his tightly played set portraying the full
spectrum of electro. With so much old-school stuff there was a real
'disco' vibe which can often be lacking at a party which focuses on
electro. The body-popping is something I haven't seen for many years
too!

2. Thanks to Simon and Lawrence of The Rebels for their melodic and
modern opening sets, and for successfully warming up a room full of
headz - it's not an easy task!

3. And of course thanks to Emile (Plant43) for his very deep and highly
sculpted live set.

Emile's and the other sets should appear at some stage on the website,
and for Emile possibly in some other form too!

Some people had asked us if they could film the event. The film will
appear in due course - it's likely to be shown on tv, and maybe
elsewhere, possibly Bleep43.
