RE: (313) Re: amp fiddler album
some classic tales in there like the realisation that he *did* know Moodyman and the stolen J-Dilla zips story oh, forgot to ask, what is this story?? is it good gossip? come on, I'm bored. The Dilla story? OK, paraphrased cos you asked so nicely: Amp hooks up young Dilla with his first MPC and lessons on how to use it. Also introduces him to Q-Tip, kickstarting a path to beatmaking superstardom. Dilla owes Amp a favour and promises to work on an album if Amp ever makes one. Amp starts to make album but Dilla is too busy to help. And then... Some kid who works in a Detroit barbershop asks Amp to produce a demo. Says he bought 10 zips from a dude for $100 and if Amp produces his demo he can keep 'em. Later when checking out the zips Amp recognises them as Dilla beats. Calls Dilla and says I've got all your zips! Whassup?. Dilla explains that someone broke into his house and stole some zips and tells Amp You can have 'em. But wait, there's more! Amp chooses a beat and makes it into the title track of Waltz Of The Ghetto Fly. All along he's thinking I know this track from somewhere, I've heard it before. A buddy comes by and says, Yeah I know that track, it's from Q-Tip's Amplified album!. Coincidently, one of Amp's companies is called Amplified. Hear the Dilla/Q-Tip joint: http://mfile.akamai.com/3171/rm/muze.download.akamai.com/2890/us/usrm/191/33 4191_1_06.ram?obj=v11016 Hear the Dilla/Amp twist (guitar by John Arnold): http://www.groovedis.com/lp/ampfiddler/waltz/b2.ram Ta da! By the way, a few months ago in Hiroshima I found a second hand 7 by Mr Fiddler of, you guessed it, Waltz Of The Ghetto Fly which was released by a French major about a decade ago. Has anyone checked Amp's old Mr Fiddler album from circa 1990/91? It's often available dirt cheap on Ebay. Andy
RE: (313) Derrick May Melbourne
How does this work? Thought the home gig was an exlusive. The support is Ben Cromack, who is an international star in the make and has an affinity with soulful techno and house. Honkytonks is definitely the most cutting edge club in Melbourne and has played host to the likes of Louie Vega. Entry is just $10 (no free list). Nooo, I'm not the promoter. A Xmas present of sorts: http://www.psychiatry.uiowa.edu/~kent/chaircrusher/IWannaBeRonHardy.mp3 With apologies to the man may he rest in peace. Gene Hunt played some unreleased Ron Hardy tape edits when he played here, and that sort of raw, live acid sound is what I was sorta going for. By the way, a few months ago in Hiroshima I found a second hand 7 by Mr Fiddler of, you guessed it, Waltz Of The Ghetto Fly which was released by a French major about a decade ago. So this was just an earlier version of that song then? Has anyone checked Amp's old Mr Fiddler album from circa 1990/91? It's often available dirt cheap on Ebay. I was tasked with finding it in a Detroit record store at the last DEMF, but alas, I did not set foot in one. Some time thereafter, the Mancunian seeker found it on mp3, and said it was *OK*. I really wanna hear 'Waltz of the Ghetto Fly' immediately though. For those who are unclear on it, I believe it's not actually out until February or March, but promo copies started flying around stores and actual recipients in the last couple of weeks. Have yet to hear a negative report. Tom, I am coming to Pittsburgh to steal your copy. I leave in 3 hours. ;) Tristan === http://www.phonopsia.co.uk [EMAIL PROTECTED]
