RE: (313)Random Drums / was Red Planet 9
Yeah I thought that RP 9 was kind of weird too. In some ways, it makes me MORE likely to use it as a tool, because if I just mix in and out pretty quick I don't even have to hit the 2nd breakdown. I do think the record is under-rated and actually a nice record for those that still play techy stuff. Ken, what was weird about the Inspiration record? I didn't remember anything weird offhand about mixing that one... ~~David -Original Message- From: Odeluga, Ken [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, January 23, 2004 9:43 AM To: kj at technotourist dot org; Blackman, Ryan (UKEKT) Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Org Subject: RE: (313)Random Drums / was Red Planet 9 I recon that people do it because it sounds cool and they don't really think about dj's when making a track (well at least i don't) Maybe that's true in many cases, but the weird thing as I've said about RP9, is that in every other respect, it sounds and handles like a tool deluxe. k
(313) Lots of stuff: Bone, Pullen, Mills, Amp Fiddler and a 'few' new records
Well, I'll try and generate some banter. Apologies if some of this is cross-posted. Saw Bone (twice) and Pullen this weekend. Bone was very good (as usual) and Pullen was better than I've heard him in a long time (although I didn't pay a ton of attention). Bone played some of the forthcoming Subject Detroit 02-04 releases @ Fabric but I had no idea of telling when they were on. He then played a track from 02 @ Plastic People Sunday morning which was rather nice. Impressions are a bit vague from 8 or 9 am, so apologies for the lack of detail. Watched a good chunk of the Exhibitionist DVD on Friday. I think it'll basically appeal to Mills fans and piss off anyone who doesn't like him or is on the fence. It's pretty sloppy in parts, but it's unbelievably candid, and you can switch between camera angles on-the-fly. Cool to watch his every movement in that much detail. Definitiely worth checking out for fans. Finally got my hands on Amp Fiddler's 'Waltz of a Ghetto Fly', and the Yam Who remix of Only Child's 'Find a Way', on which he sings (and I think he plays keys too). Have had about a week with them now. The Yam Who remix is rather nice. Starts out with piano and vocal and slowly builds up some slower beatdown steam. Nice keys all over this one. The album is fantastic. There are a few songs on there that are going to blow people away I think, particularly 'Waltz of a Ghetto Fly' (even has George Clinton on vocals as the song winds down) and 'I Believe in You', which has some amazing backing vocals and a really simple but crafty lyric. But the whole thing is excellent. A proper album, from bigger P-funk moments to Love and War-style soul. Don't expect anything uptempo really, but get ready for something that'll really grow on you. Also got the John Tejad and Arian Leviste on MG a while back, but only finally put it on recently. Have had a chance to listen to it once so far, but there are somenice moments. On the whole, I'm less impressed with Tejada's collaborative efforts, and this didn't really compare to their last MG release on first listen, but I think Tejada fans should definitely give it a shake. If I have any lingering criticisms of him these days, it's that I think he's filling up double-packs when he might only have enough quality tracks for a 12, but I guess that's a minor point, and 'The Toiling of Idle Hands' was an exception to that I thought. Here's some new purchases from the weekend. Don't have them in-hand yet, so these notes are just based on audio clips. Hoefully I'll get some more detailed reviews out in the next week. Probably a few more to come as well. Got these all @ Piccadilly, who've have loads of new stuff in over the last few weeks. I really love that damn shop! :) Kai Alce : M-7 - 12 (a tasty, dirty Detroit house groove. Not essential, but nice) Brothomstates : Rktic / Matala Bobo - 12 (Arcola thingy which everyone is rightly spooing over) Chef : Extraball (The Remixes) - 12 (Kemit Sources and Freaks remixes - both sound hot) DJ Genesis : Back In The Middle (The Remixes) - 12 (has that Theo Parrish remix we all been waiting for - yay!) Everyday People Feat. Loretta Heywood : I Can't Sleep - 12 (Spacek and Afronaught remixes - a gorgeous vocal) Mark Force : Running In The Red - 12 (not sure how I missed out on this earlier. I know I had it in my cart at one point... Quality broken techno) Franz Ferdinand : Take Me Out - Morgan Geist Re-Version - 12 (think: House of Jealous Lovers remix, but slower, better, and this time with the vocal. Col) Inner Life : Moment Of My Life / I Like It Like That - 12 (Salsoul reissue that Farley always caned in those WBMX mixes - one of my favorite Hotmix 5 classics) Kerrier District : Kerrier District - 3xLP (Vibert gone disco) K L : Smile / Life - 12 (this one slipped by unnoticed the first time - '99. Kenny Larkin on KMS reissue. Feel dumb for not having it sooner...) Monolake : Cern / White II - 12 (yummy) Moodmusic Limited : Unreleased Vol.2 - 12 (guess I'm gonna have to track down that Heinrik Schwarz as well, innit) New Sector Movements : Sho You Right / Something - 12 (new NSM promo on Virgin. Slow-mo broken soul - may as well call it rb. Sounds tasty though) Nu Era : Some Think Electronic - 2x10 (yet more broken techno, from the 4 Hero massive) Osunlade Nadirah Shakoor : Pride / Touched My Soul - 12 (repress. Dig both tracks) Recloose : Us Vs Us - 12 (was hesitant first time I saw it, eventually it was the Kid Sublime remix that sold me. Real slow. Real good) Franck Roger : Mascarade - 12 (deep house and broken beats a la Versatile. Delivers exactly the quality you'd expect) Arthur Russell : The World Of Arthur Russell - 3xLP (Very happy to have Dinosaur L and a few others off of this, and hoping to learn about a ton of his other stuff. Soul Jazz hooks my ass up!) Sequel : Neptune, Moon Mars / Upsolid - 12 (more very tech-y broken beats on Sonar Kollectiv) Dani Siciliano : Likes... - 2xLP (when I first heard

(313) A few reviews
So in an attempt to get the 313 list to break its vow of silence, here are a couple of record reviews I did for www.littledetroit.net - a bit of Speedy J on Novamute and a bit of classic-style acid madness from Sendex on Bunker: Sendex - Exposure EP (Bunker Records) Using only equipment from the early and mid-1980s, Sendex (aka Sander Meyer) has constructed this EP of house and acid in the classic Chicago mode. The first thing to strike the listener is the authenticity, in both feeling and sound, of each of the tracks on here: All Night Long and Evidence kick off the A side in the style of early Larry Heard productions, with plaintive synth strings riding over metallic Juno basslines and raw drum machines, whileJack gets underway with a sparse and menacing rhythm, driven by low toms and kick drums, before developing into a pretty storming and balls-out acid track. The acid theme continues on the B side, although in slightly less ominous fashion, with title track Exposure modulating the otherwise high pH count with some smooth but moody synth pads. Sounding strangely like a prototype version of Laurent Garnier's Acid Eiffel, this is perhaps the standout cut on the EP. Despite side B closing with the slightly uninspiring acid-electro workout Hypenosis, this 12 is bound to appeal if you're a sucker for the mid-1980s Chicago sound. If there's going to be an acid house revival anytime soon, we can expect to be buried under tonnes of shoddy acid EPs; this, however, isn't one of them. Speedy J ft Literon - Collabs 200 (Novamute) Dutch producer Literon (aka Gert-Jam Bijl, who has releases on Music Man, Universal Language and Op-Art) joins Speedy J (aka Jochem Paap, who really needs no introduction) on the second of three EPs featuring the Plus 8/Warp/Novamute veteran collaborating with other artists. Most of the tracks on this series of EPs are apparently several years old, and weren't originally intended for release - instead, the tracks have been used by Speedy J as elements of his live sets, and are only now being made available to the public. Snacker gets underway with a rigid but slightly quirky rhythm that builds for a few bars before a nicely overdriven snare drum appears, slicing through the kick and bringing an enjoyable lop- sidedness to the whole affair. As the track develops, the use of heavy reverb and a white noise effect build an atmosphere of confusion and dislocation which would be extremely effective on a club system, and the producers do a good job of avoiding dancefloor clichés to deliver a track that's original and distinctive, while remaining extremely usable for the DJ. Knicker, on the flip side, sounds immediately more intriguing to this reviewer, less tough and more funky, with a warm-sounding set of drum sounds, a satisfyingly rotary bassline, and a slightly lower BPM. There's more of a groove to this track - the eccentricity of Snacker's sound is restrained here, allowing the dancefloor to concentrate more on the subtle development of each part, and on the understated but intricate variations on the main rhythm that make fairly frequent appearances. Both tracks on this EP focus on the dancefloor, with the producers concentrating primarily on rhythm and groove rather than on arrangement or melody. When making music in this style, the key to success comes in the effort put into making sure every sound in the mix is as lustrous as it can be, and Collabs 200 is no failure. Expect to hear this in the sets of many a tasteful DJ soon!

RE: (313) Los Hermanos
Yeah, there's definitely something strangely flat and unfinished to it - kind of sounds as though it could have been made on one of those handheld Yamaha synth/sequencer things. Everything is just too raw and plain in the mix, really, to provoke any excitement or draw the listener into it. That said, I *do* prefer it to the last Los Hermanos record, which I was fairly disappointed with. But ultimately it doesn't do much to undermine my suspicion that Los Hermanos has jumped the shark, in a way, since their first two releases... -Original Message- From: Robert Taylor [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 27 January 2004 11:44 To: Maxim Sullivan; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) Los Hermanos I didn't think much of it either - sounded a bit like a theme tune to a holiday TV programme -Original Message- From: Maxim Sullivan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, January 27, 2004 11:40 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Los Hermanos Erm, not sure I like it. I've listened to it a few times now off the RA file - I really like the groove it's in and I think it's just a matter of getting used to the sound of the lead instrument. Yeah, it sounds a bit flat but that's the sound of the Flamenco guitar style (or emulated guitar as the case may be). I think come Movement 04 it will be all over the place, like it or not. I like it, I'll buy it MEK Maxim Sullivan [EMAIL PROTECTED]To: 313@hyperreal.org com cc: Subject: (313) Los Hermanos 01/27/04 05:33 AM Hi Folks, New lost hermanos you can listen to here!!! http://www.loshermanos.com/ Word Max

Well there is the saying.. If you listen to anything long enough, you'll begin to like it :) LOL - and we have the top 40 to prove that saying correct! Serendipity in music should not be an issue You're joking right? I think there is serendipity in music all the time and it's a huge issue - in fact I'd have to say that techno music is and was dependent on serendipity. You discover new things by experimentation - things you aren't searching for but find work and even bring you to a next level. So if you could explain to me why or how serendipity should not be an issue in regard to music I'd love to hear it... MEK
